KEEP AN EYE ON LEICESTER NAP
2.35 Redcar Very little form to go on here, so we have to hope none of the four debutants (Hursa in particular) are above average.
With that caveat out of the way, I like the chance of the Mark Johnston trained Rose Of Kildare who can now build on the promise of her Brighton debut second.
She can surely be excused a below par second run at Chester two weeks ago when a fairly well beaten fourth behind runaway winner Full Authority. She was slowly away that day and from a poor stall (10) there was never much hope after that. It also came on testing soft ground and I think the run is probably best ignored.
3.45 Carlisle The card at Carlisle has a real Monday feel to it. Class 4 and 5 races throughout the card – nothing it not consistent!
The 3.45 however has thrown up a race that looks much better than it’s official class 5 status.
William Haggas has taken out Current Option which leaves I Could Do Better as the warm favourite but Brandy Spirit could be the bet.
Trained by the wily Mick Easterby, Brandy Spirit ran a solid race first time up this season when third to Trinity Lake and just like Wetherby, Carlisle is a tough course which he should enjoy.
I Could Do Better sprung a 33/1 surprise on debut when beating the John Gosden hotpot King Of Comedy at Redcar in November but it came on soft ground and it’s rattling fast today.
I don’t really want to be guessing at short odds when there’s the question of a penalty to defy.
6.15 Leicester My first take on the race was that the Queen’s runner Regular probably looked worth opposing.
Michael Bell has fitted the cheekpieces for the first time on the three-year-old who remains a maiden after five starts and has been costly to follow. He ran well at Wetherby last time out but might be vulnerable to one of the lighter raced improvers.
Dubai Eye certainly fits the bill in terms of an improver. She showed nice promise on debut when third at Kempton, despite being slowly away and should know more about the game today. The form of that race has worked out reasonably well and the filly is bidding to repeat the stable’s success in this race last year.
It pretty much looks a match-up between the pair as Mark Johnston’s King Shamardal didn’t build on the promise of a debut run with a moderate effort at Wetherby last time out.
