LAD’S BECHER WIN SO DEVASTATING
Daqman dived in first! He said on Saturday before the Many Clouds Chase: ‘A Grand National winner quickly fades away unless he is a Many Clouds.
‘And Noble Yeats may be among that rare breed after scoring at Wexford in October’.
That was a bold move when the horse in question was exchanging at 9.3 on BETDAQ for Saturday’s race, an outsider at that price in a six-horse race.
NOBLE YEATS The odds crashed to 3-1 and the result was such an imposing victory for Emmet Mullins’ seven-year-old that it started a clamour which took him to the front of the Grand National betting (8-1 shortest) but also introduced him among the market leaders (around 12-1) for the Gold Cup.
ASHTOWN LAD Won the very next race on Saturday over the National fences in the Becher Chase, only his sixth chase, in devastating style.
Dan Skelton says the Ultima is next but the ultimate – the National – would be on the cards if, now eight, he can take his racing better than last season, when he improved for a break and ran out of steam in the Scottish National.
My view is that the Scottish National is a four-mile sprint and that a horse who doesn’t waste energy when he jumps would be better at Aintree.
The Tommy Whittle winner Enqarde was not seen with a chance and I’m resting him from the Fortune Cookies until Dr Richard Newland hits form (currently 0-20).
I have decided that Mount Ida is not one to follow; she is too expensive in her prep races, though may bounce back in a staying handicap.
In beating the mare 23 lengths at Thurles on Thursday, Darasso boosted Hewick, winner – giving him 7lb – of the Galway Plate last July and in October hero of the American Grand National. Hewick’s in the Fortune Cookies list already.
THE BIG DOG: ‘He’ll go for staying chases and end up being an Aintree horse.’ This time the man who got in first was trainer Peter Fahey when he said that before The Big Dog won the Troytown, shrugging off a weight disadvantage to 17 others.
CAPODANNO The Punchestown champion novice, not yet seen this season, so the jury is out on whether he can make an impact in the Gold Cup or even at Aintree.
COMMODORE Striking grey, intelligent jumper; won at the Cheltenham autumn meeting (3m 2f) this week a year ago, and Venetia Williams is now bowling strikes every weekend.
Venetia’s Peter Marsh winner Royal Pagaille got a Gold Cup entry from owner Rich Richi after a superb performance at Newbury in the Spring. It remains to be seen how the trainer handles both horse and owner.
CORACH RAMBLER Fourth in the Warwick Classic (3m 5f) before winning the Ultima. Ran on well from the rear to finish fourth in the Newbury Gold Cup last weekend, confirming from Lucinda Russell: ‘He’s a National horse now.’
STATTLER Good jumping as well as stamina won him the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham (3m 6f). We might see him return at Punchestown on Sunday. Protektorat, of course, is the mainstay of our team.
IT’S STEADY AS YOU GO AT LINGFIELD
⭕ 2.25 Lingfield Is this 2m 4f chase far enough for Achille? The Becher fifth and Welsh Grand National fourth last ran at less than 3m five years ago.
And Venetia Williams’ 12-year-old hasn’t won or been placed at a trip similar to today’s since Pau on heavy in June, 2015.
On the plus side the stable is striking just short of 30% (10-35) and Achille is down the handicap, 17lb lower since a losing run of seven begun in the Spring of last year and 4lb lower than his last success in April 2021.
West Approach, also 12 going on 13, has won just once, in a two-horse hunter chase, in 19 outings since November, 2019.
Stamp Your Feet, an Irish Points winner in the Spring, is a former two-miler who has switched to a stable which last won a race 390 days back.
Oxwich Bay has been a once-a-year winner in the last three seasons. He’s won for this jockey at this trip on this ground, but will he be at his best today with his stable out of form (1-32)? He last scored in April.
This is surely between the in-form yards, with rear-running stayer Achille giving 12lb to Go Steady, who has placed 11 times over this sort of trip and won five.
VEERING TOWARDS A 10.5 BETDAQ BET
⭕ 2.55 Lingfield Gary Moore, who is 3-4 since Saturday, continuing his great run of November, has already won off a big weight with Mark of Gold among four 2m wins but will the five-year-old get the near-2.5 miles? I’ll risk it in this company at a tasty 4.9 on Betdaq Betting Exchange.
Breaking Waves has already done the distance but is 15lb higher, and Give Me A Cuddle won over further in the Spring but his yard hasn’t had a Jumps winner for 185 days and its last three starters have been beaten a total of 94 lengths.
⭕ 3.25 Lingfield After 50-1 (twice) and 28-1 (twice) Kim Bailey’s Percy Veering was suddenly one for the money here the last day, starting 4-1.
Looked the part in first-time cheekpieces until fell seventh and is worth another chance at BETDAQ 10.5 offers.
