BUILDING BLOCKS EX-FRENCH
2.15 Musselburgh The racing is pretty mindless stuff today. I jumped at this three-year-olds juvenile hurdle because it is labelled class 2 and might have a decent sort in amongst them. Highly unlikely.
The stats say that, if there is a horse for the future, it will be favourite and win today but, with Guena Des Mottes, you need the French hurdles winner to be fit after 250 days off.
His trainer, Ben Pauling, hasn’t had a winner for 49 days, and his last seven starters still standing have been beaten a total of 384 lengths
So I prefer Building Bridges, who came over from Jessica Harrington in Ireland and won first time of asking for Stuart Edmunds. He had beaten Hasankey on the Flat at Navan when that one was trained by Dermot Weld.
Beechwood Jude is a soft-ground winner over 2m on the Flat here at Musselburgh, so may want further over hurdles.
El Picador, a Sir Michael Stoute cast-off, and another ex-French, Balranald, were second and third here at Musselburgh 33 days ago.
Guildhall is switching from the Flat, now with Donald McCain from Ralph Beckett. There could be a surprise but the biggest one would be if Building Bridges (BETDAQ 3.8 as I write) failed to get involved in the finish.
REACHING FOR THE SKY AT 4.5
2.30 Lingfield William Jarvis is more than pleased with apprentice Gaia Boni, whose 7lb claim helped her to a neck victory at Kempton in November, giving her 2-4, a 50% record.
Gaia positioned her horse so that she made excellent use of the cutaway to come through for the narrow victory and her second success.
Her first winner was Wimpole Hall at Chelmsford three weeks ago, and the two are reunited over the same trip but over a different surface at Lingfield, 5.6 in the BETDAQ orange early mouse.
Humbert has always been a miler and Michele Strogoff a Wolverhampton specialist, while Just The Man has to redeem a flop at Kempton on the last day. But I did think 4.5 offers Sky Defender were generous. He’s a hidden horse.
After the three-year-old won at Bath in the Spring, he was aimed far too high in the London Gold Cup at Newbury.
A run back at Lingfield 11 days ago suggests that three-year-old Sky Defender should now be ready to resume a career of obvious promise.
6.0 SHOWMAN ON THE SCENE
3.00 Lingfield I choose to be with a three-year-old again. The opposition to Prince Of Rome and Thgreatestshowman is three years older, very soon now to be a minimum of seven.
Watchable is already nine, and Stake Acclaim has never won on AW. You’d worry about the older pair with CD form.
But Gracious John hasn’t won since the Spring of 2018, and Just That Lord has already been beaten by one of the three-year-olds I nominated, Thegreatestshowman (BETDAQ 6.0 taken).
In fact, just as I expect this afternoon, the field was beaten over the Lingfield CD that day by two three-year-olds.
Prince Of Rome, who is also three, has won only at Chelmsford, and has been raced as if he needs six furlongs these days.
CORVAIR COULD DASH CLEAR
3.45 Newcastle I’m opposing the favourite, surprised to see Lexington Dash kept to 6f. She looked a prime candidate for a longer trip when second over 6f at Lingfield. Maybe they have a nursery in mind, after today’s further experience.
In any event, she takes on a promising colt today in Corvair, whose form is the reverse of hers, in that he is dropping back from 7f after trying to make all at Chelmsford.
The winner that day is highly regarded and I fancy Corvair to last out in today’s company (4.5 on BETDAQ), though you always have to keep an eye on William Haggas’s runners at Newcastle.
However, his Tomorrow’s Dream is another you’d expect – on breeding – to need more than this six furlongs, and he was very easy to back at 10.0 this morning.
