JUST FOUR BIG MEETINGS LEFT
Fore! Today and tomorrow Daqman tees up topics and tips in advance of the four major meetings that remain over Jumps in 2019.
ASCOT (Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20)
KEMPTON (December 26) King George V1 Chase
LEOPARDSTOWN (December 26, 27, 28, 29)
CHEPSTOW (December 27) Coral Welsh Grand National
⚠️ HEADS UP The one-two in the bumper at the November Cheltenham meeting could take two prizes on Friday at Ascot when the winner, Israel Camp (David Pipe), tries for another NH Flat race (3.40) after the runner-up, Time Flies By (Nicky Henderson) makes his hurdles debut in the Supreme Trial (1.55).
⚠️ HEADS UP Last year’s Supreme Trial winner, Angels Breath, also trained by Nicky Henderson, may clash with recent Haydock scorer, Dashel Drasher (Jeremy Scott), in the novices’ chase (2.30).
⚠️ HEADS UP As I forecast, Nicky Henderson is having second thoughts about a repeat clash in the King George on Boxing Day between Altior and his November conqueror, Cyrname (Paul Nicholls).
⚠️ HEADS UP Two previous winners, Elegant Escape (2018) and Native River (2016), both trained by Colin Tizzard, are vying for favouritism at the head of the Coral Welsh Grand National market.
⚠️ HEADS UP Willie Mullins, who has won the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown six times in nine seasons, has Klassical Dream clear favourite for December 29, despite his shock defeat in the Morgiana.
⚠️ HEADS UP Andy Dufresne dropped off the front of the betting for the Ballymore at the Cheltenham festival after defeat by Latest Exhibition at Navan, who will take in a race at Leopardstown in February on the way to the Albert Bartlett.
AFTER CAREFUL SCRUTINY NAP IS…..
2.15 Plumpton Scrutinise looks the best bet on today’s Plumpton card for trainer Zoe Davison and jockey Page Fuller.
He was an impressive five length course and distance winner last time out and is taken to defy the rise in weights.
It was only his second start for the stable and also since wind surgery so it’s possible he remains leniently handicapped and should see off the challenge of Broke Away who is 0-11 over hurdles.
3.20 Plumpton My eyes always get drawn to a Venetia Williams trained runner on heavy ground and I will give a speculative vote here to Mountain Leopard who caught my eye on debut at Market Rasen to finish third to Benson. He was staying on to good effect that day and should relish the more testing ground here which will make it more of a stamina test.
The Dr Richard Newland trained winner Benson was quite impressive that day and it’s interesting to see he holds an entry for the Listed bumper at Ascot on Friday.
Chief danger to Mountain Leopard today may come from Falberto who also has the benefit of experience. He was a creditable third at Chepstow on good to soft ground.
Little River Boy draws the eye, being trained by Philip Hobbs and partnered by Richard Johnson, but it’s concerning to see that the stable are 0-12 in bumpers this season.
7.10 Wolverhampton My man in the long grass puts in a good word for Royal Star in this, now five runner, race with the defection of Motawaafeq.
Royal Star has been easy to back so far but the support could arrive late and she might be the value in the race against the two with ‘sexier’ form figures Godhead and The Met.
Roger Charlton’s Royal Star showed plenty of potential in her first two starts, both at Newbury, but hasn’t built on that since with defeats at Salisbury and Kempton. However, she is stepped back in trip today and that might give her the key to losing her maiden status.
John Gosden’s Godhead quickened nicely to make a winning debut at Kempton and can only improve on her second start.
