DAQMAN’S 1,000-POINT TARGET
All good things.. After Enable (12 in a row) in the Arc de Triomphe and Stradivarius (10) in the British Champions Long-Distance Cup, another legend was pipped into second place yesterday, Beauty Generation ending a 10-wins sequence at Sha Tin.
It’s all been decided over here in England: Oisin Murphy was crowned champion jockey at Ascot on Saturday; Daniel Tudhope was second, Joe Fanning third.
Trainer John Gosden took 165 winners to net £7million, ahead of Aidan O’Brien who reached more than £6million with just 18. Enable on £1,375,000 ended up only £3,000 in front of her arch-rival Magical after her championship win on Saturday.
In Ireland, Donnacha O’Brien rode the first two at Naas yesterday and has opened up a gap on Colin Keane. I forget the name of the leading trainer… but he’s around euro5m in front of another son in second place. Family business or what!
But still the fat lady refuses to sing. Flat racing (turf) goes on for nearly another fortnight until Newmarket on Saturday November 3.

FUTURITY FOR JAPAN’S BROTHER
3.25 Doncaster, Saturday (Futurity Trophy) Final test for two-year-olds which has produced the last two Newmarket 2,000 Guineas winners, Saxon Warrior and Magna Grecia, both trained by Aidan O’Brien.
Incredibly, O’Brien has 11 of the 12 five day runners, the sole non AOB-trained rival is Andrew Balding’s Kameko.
Among O’Brien’s battalion are the lightly-raced potential improvers: Innisfree, New World Tapestry and Mogul.
Can one of these emerge as a threat to Earthlight and Pinatubo? O’Brien says that Mogul and Innisfree are his two for Doncaster.
Innisfree (by Galileo; dam a granddaughter of Sonic Lady). Dual winner already. ‘The nicer ground will see this good traveller show plenty of pace.’
Mogul (by Galileo out of a Danehill mare). A 3.4m-guineas yearling, brother to Japan and dam a half-sister to Arc winner, Sagamix.
Won his last two, including the Champions Juvenile at Leopardstown last month. Missed the Dewhurst to wait for this Futurity finish to his season.
ARROW TO HIT PONTEFRACT TARGET
3.50 Pontefract (Silver Tankard Stakes Listed) Some Listed action to look forward to at Pontefract on Monday with this mile test for two-year-olds which will be a real test of stamina up the hill finish on likely soft ground.
The southern raiders dominate and preference is for the likeable Grand Rock who shouldn’t be lacking in the stamina department given his two recent wins, have both come on heavy ground, at Hamilton and Epsom – both undulating courses.
His latest win came in a three runner race where they finished in a bunch but he seemed to win a little more cosily than the official neck distance suggested and fully deserves to take this step up in class.
The main danger has to be the Ralph Beckett trained Wyclif – especially given the recent form of the stable with a superb eight wins from their last 26 runners.
Wyclif won on debut at Doncaster when the ground was soft but then disappointed as 8/15 favourite at Leicester when only third. He bounced back to win a decent event at York last time out on good ground.
He’s up in class and distance today and whilst bred to see out the extra trip is not yet proven which sways me in favour of Grand Rock.
4.50 Pontefract Up in distance for this 2m 2f marathon named in memory of the Timeform founder Phil Bull.
He was a numbers man and the official ratings here point firmly in favour of Arrowtown – the race conditions suiting her very well. Her trainer Mick Easterby has had three winners in the last two weeks including Rolladice who popped up at 40/1 at Catterick on Saturday.
Arrowtown will be nothing like that price but her claims are compelling.
Her four career wins have come on an equal mix of soft and heavy ground and two of them have been over 2m+.
She comes into this on the back of a good fourth at York last time out when she was only beaten four lengths by stable companion Sassie and looks the nap of the day.
6.00 Southwell Finery sets up the market here after her debut second at Newcastle to a 50/1 chance.
However, the other Cheveley Park Stud Creativity runner might have the edge. She is a little more streetwise with four starts but crucially two of those have come at Southwell. As regular readers will know I place plenty of positives on that as this Fibresand surface really is totally unique.
We know she handles it and she improved last time out over seven furlongs and looks certain to be suited by the step up in trip.
