LAZZAT FLYING FRENCH IMPACT

🏏 Howzzat! The winners of the Prix Jean Prat (Puchkine), July Cup (Mill Stream) and Jubilee at Royal Ascot (Khaadem) were left standing in Deauville’s Prix Maurice De Gheest yesterday by Lazzat.

None of those three stars – not a one! – could even place behind the flying Lazzat, now six times winner for French trainer Jerome Reynier.

By the 2,000 Guineas runner-up Territories out of a sister to 1,000 Guineas winner Sleepytime, the unbeaten three-year-old gelding burst through to score a long-looking three lengths.

Reynier said last night: ‘My ambition continues to be winning a Group 1 in England and we’ll see if this fits Lazzat’s trajectory, which has as its target the €6m Golden Eagle at Rosehill on November 2.’

Reynier’s Facteur Cheval has tried three times for that elusive UK Group 1: second in the 2023 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood behind Paddington and third in the same race won by Notable Speech last week, he was second in between in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes on British Champions Day last October.

Facteur Cheval, a possible for the Irish Champion Stakes (September 14) at Leopardstown, won a Group 1 at Meydan and now Lazzat has his Group 1 at Deauville.

It’s all part of the recent rise and rise of French horses, which clearly has not peaked with last year’s European champion, Arc winner Ace Impact.

EY UP – THE BOSS IS ABOUT

⭕ 4.30 Ripon This is a wide open market on Betdaq Betting Exchange despite there only being six runners but equally it won’t take much winning as it’s packed full with runners that are finding passing the post first difficult.

A case in point being the likely favourite Poet’s Dawn who is 042-6579342 since winning at Redcar last year and is getting no relief from the handicapper. He hails from the Tim Easterby yard who are 3-78 with their latest runners.

Also, at nine, Poet’s Dawn is unlikely to be finding much improvement and if everything does align for him today you deserve to be paid out – but not at short odds.

I’ll take a chance with Ey Up Its The Boss who does get some help from the handicapper with a 2lb drop and is now 2lb higher than he was when winning over course and distance in May on the same good ground expected in Yorkshire today. It HAD to be Yorkshire with a name like that!

The downside with him (and partly why we were getting 7.2 this morning) is that his last two runs with cheekpieces on have been really moderate. The headgear is ditched today and I am relying on a bounce back to his earlier form for a WIN 20 return.

TILTING THE SCALES

⭕ 4.45 Lingfield There are two problems with novice events like this. The first is that there are often several debutants which immediately makes you cagey in terms of punting and the second is that defying a penalty can be pretty difficult.

The first problem doesn’t really apply here as all nine runners have previous form so for me the question is whether Apotheosis can defy a penalty for his win at Haydock, which came in a slightly better grade race. He had to battle quite hard to justify favouritism that day. It was a driving finishing and he won by a nose and a head. The runner-up has won since to boost the form but the penalty is a real steadier.

Granger Bay was disappointing on his first start this season but could easily run better now he is dropped, quite significantly, in class. Hollie Doyle stays in the south today for two rides rather than head north for the lady riders night at Carlisle.

However, I’ll take a chance with Andrew Balding’s Upscale who would have a huge chance on her debut form at Newmarket (second) and June run at Haydock (also second). It didn’t go right for her at Chester last time out when she was sent off 6/4 for a class 3 event – but she wouldn’t be the first horse to bounce back from a disappointing run at Chester.

I’M HAVANA NAP

⭕ 5.00 Ripon I’m popping back to Ripon for a sporting priced Monday nap.

The ever consistent Havana Prince made all to win back to back races over course and distance in May and June and it would be no surprise to see him go close again.

He confirmed his continuing well-being with a win at Redcar last time out and his front-running style is well suited to Ripon where pacesetters can be hard to peg back.

Both Rogue State and Evelyn’s Phoenix were trading at shorter odds than him this morning but have something to prove having been beaten favourites last time out. In the case of Rogue State, she lived up to her name a little when beaten at odds-on over course and distance.

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
