CAUSE IS COMING BACK ON COURSE
ALTIOR (Nicky Henderson) Bringing forward my topspots from last season, we have to include Altior, unbeaten in hurdles and chasers for 11 consecutive races since October 2015.
The Arkle winner in March seems likely to step into the illustrious Seven Barrows horseshoes of Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase and should land some supernaps along the way!
BUVEUR D’AIR (Nicky Henderson) Henderson already has the champion hurdler. This is another sequence horse – seven in a row – who is likely to try to extend it in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday fortnight, December 2.
CAUSE OF CAUSES (Gordon Elliott) One of the great finds for this column, winning for us three times at Cheltenham in the NH Chase at 44.0 ante-post, the Kim Muir at 11.0 and the Cross Country at 5.0. Could be back on Friday, starting his banks journey to the festival and then the Grand National.
CHARLI PARCS (Nicky Henderson) Dark horse at Seven Barrows, unexposed after five runs, though seemingly disappointing in the Triumph Hurdle but that was a hot race won by the Philip Hobbs sequence horse (eight in a row) Defi Du Seuil. Charli could start his season on Sunday.
LE PREZIEN (Paul Nicholls) Set himself up for a big handicap when beaten only a neck at Cheltenham last Saturday. In the frame 12 times (five wins) from 13 starts, still standing. The debate is about his preferred distance. When they get the optimum right, he can win a top contest.

DOUBLE DOSE OF MATCH OF THE DAY
Two matches to look forward to today and I’m not talking football.
There’s a dearth of runners at Kempton this afternoon with two match races and the opener is now down to a very uncompetitive three runner race now that Irish Prophecy is a non runner leaving Nicky Henderson’s PTP winner Mr Whipped as a long odds-on favourite on his Rules debut.
For a track that has been threatened with closure it’s a really disappointing card, even allowing for the quality on show. It certainly can’t be attributed to prize money either as the two match races have £33,000 added prize money between them !!! Nice work if you can get and it transpires that only connections of four horses want to get it.
3.30 Kempton was also a match last year when won by Nicky Henderson’s Josses Hill and it looks a case of deja vu as Henderson has the hotpot Whisper here. It might be a little closer than the betting suggests though as there was only half a length between him and today’s sole rival Clan Des Obeaux in the Grade 2 Dipper Chase at Cheltenham in January. Paul Nicholls has his string in good form and this could be quite close but certainly not a betting race for me.
1.50 Kempton 14 runners looks a Grand National sized field in the context of today’s card and my first bet of the week is Way Back Then.
Trained by Ben Pauling, who has had 5 winners from his last 24 runners, Way Back Then made all to win a bumper in good style last November and the patience should be rewarded today. This tight flat track should suit well and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him kick on and try and make all the running.
Black Mischief was outclassed in Grade 2 company at Chepstow last time out but had previously won in good style at Warwick and looks a big danger in this weaker event – despite his penalty.
Secret Investor is another who has been off the track for a while but he showed promise on his debut at Ascot when runner-up to Kimberlite Candy.
2.45 Southwell This isn’t even five furlongs – 4f and 214 yards to be precise so I can’t really entertain being with Know The Truth who has a habit of missing the break.
Nellie’s Dancer finished in front of Know The Truth over a longer trip here but both are disappointing and stepping back in trip.
The eye is therefore drawn to the Ken Condon trained Lyin Eyes. She hasn’t shown a great deal but seems an out an out sprinter and whilst it’s a leap of faith to think she can handle Southwell – she has run well enough at Dundalk and in such a weak event it may pay to follow the Irish raider.
3.40 Carlisle Kateson finished like a train when winning on debut at Chepstow and should be suited by the stiff Carlisle circuit. He has a penalty to defy which is always hard in bumpers but it looked an above average race at Chepstow and the grey can go back to back.
