TWO MORE VALENTINE’S DAYS?
FLAT DIARY
26 March Ireland launches the Flat turf season with the Irish Lincolnshire, starring the winners of the last two years, Sruthan, and Onenightidreamed.
But the likely favourite is Aussie Valentine, runner-up in both years. He’s 17lb better off with Onightidreamed and gets a stone turnaround with Sruthan.
01 April The Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster sends the English turf season under way, with punters advised to look outside the box, after successive winners at 16-1, 25-1, 20-1 (twice) and 12-1 (twice), two among them for Richard Fahey.
Last year’s third, Battle Of Marathon, heads the weights, with Fahey having 14 among the 108 entries.
09 April The focus switches back to Ireland with two Group-3 stakes races at Naas, the Gladness and Alleged stakes.
The Gladness was won in 2014 and 2016 by the Irish Lincoln winners, Sruthan and Onenightidreamed, both entered again. So, too, Aussie Valentine!
14 April Lingfield AW Championships Finals Day: six Good Friday races worth £1million
6-7 May English 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, Newmarket
27-28 Irish 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, The Curragh
THE JUMPS
6-8 April Liverpool Grand National meeting
17 April Irish Grand National
A BELTOR OF A BET AT TAUNTON
3.10 Southwell Bobo Mac brings some decent Irish form to the table but has struggled to get his head in front and is taken on at a short price. Preference instead is for Potters Approach who may appreciate this faster surface based on breeding. He has shown a fair level of form over hurdles already despite a tendency to jump left but if Warren Greatrex has ironed that issue out over the 51 day break he could be a big price at 8.2 on BETDAQ.
3.50 Taunton This is a drop in grade for former smart juvenile Beltor who has been steadily sliding down the weights of late and today could be his day. He didn’t disgrace himself on unsuitably soft ground in the Betfair Hurdle last time and should be much more at home on this fast surface. Tom O’Brien gets on well with him after riding his to his two hurdles win and the pair have a strong chance of making it three today. The 5 available on BETDAQ looks a great opportunity and he is put forward as a strong fancy.
