HEADS UP ON TWO-YEAR-OLDS: Day 1

Does Pinatubo sound like a Classic winner to you? Maybe Arizona has a better ring to it. What’s for sure is that these two top two-year-olds will be challenged in the second half of the season and new names will emerge. Will either one be good enough for the Classics?

You’ve seen the 2020 Derby winner by now, said an article I read the other day. That’s 60% wrong and, in the last 10 seasons, the same number, six out of 10, had not won a race by August 18 of their juvenile season. The last 10 years:

Anthony Van Dyck unplaced July 1 The Curragh; won July 15 Killarney
Masar won May 25 Goodwood a short head from Invincible Army
Wings Of Eagles unplaced July 29 Galway; won August 18 Killarney
Harzand unplaced September 20; failed to score as a two-year-old.
Golden Horn won Nottingham October 29 (very slowly away)
Australia second The Curragh June 30; won The Curragh July 20
Ruler Of The World unraced juvenile; won first time (April) in his Classic year.
Camelot won July 14 Leopardstown (2-2 before Guineas-Derby double)
Pour Moi unplaced September 23, Fontainebleau; won Longchamp October 24.
Workforce won September 23, Goodwood. Just two runs before his Derby.

BIRDIE CHANCE IN OPEN RACE

2.15 Cartmel The opening maiden hurdle looks a modest event and with form figures of 222 it’s tempting to look beyond the locally trained Dagian.

The James Moffatt trained runner has some reasonable placed efforts to his name but was woeful on the flat last time out when finishing last of 17 in a Carlisle handicap beaten 45 lengths.

That hardly inspires confidence and the stable are not in great form either.

There’s been morning support for Glan Y Hors who has some Irish hurdling form to his name but again his recent flat form and current trainer form isn’t inspiring much confidence.

Preference is for Rukwa who is lightly raced and may find some improvement. He only tired late home at Hexham last time out and should find this flatter track much more to his liking. He had previously been pipped a half length at Huntingdon and basically a repetition of either of his last two efforts could easily prove good enough in a race with many question marks over his rivals.

2.30 Ayr Connections of Compton’s Finale seem anxious to get a run in. Trained in Ireland by Adrian Keatley, Compton’s Finale also holds an entry at Musselburgh tomorrow.

The yard do well with their raiders here at Ayr and he is undoubtedly better handicapped in the UK than he is in Ireland. He can be given a strong chance off a mark of 60 judged on some of his better runs – despite an overall CV that reads 0-14.

7.50 Windsor Birdcage Walk is progressive and can defy a 5lb rise in the weights for her win on handicap debut at Nottingham last time out.

Whilst that win came on heavy ground, she has been consistent on good ground too and seemed to appreciate the step up in trip at Nottingham.

She is preferred to Gallic from the in-form Ed Walker yard who is so far unproven over this longer trip.
