WHO then laid Battalion all day on Saturday from 8.2 early mouse in exchanges to 28.0 (yes, 28.0) in the run up to the race?
The horse they couldn’t get enough of all week they suddenly couldn’t give away! The Racing Post yesterday reported that Battalion opened 12-1 on course and the SP was 16-1.
Was it the coup that never was? Was a plunge horse foiled by a problem on the day? Or did layers win twice, the springer sprung?
I only know from my racereader that ‘Battalion, slow away, raced in last place, every chance into the straight and moved up menacingly on the rail, but no further impression, faded.’
Trained Jamie Osbourne and ridden Dougie Costello, Battalion, says the Post, is a four-time CD winner but hadn’t been seen since April.
‘Stayed on having raced out the back after a slow start.’ Nothing about the topsy-turvy market moves.
Did anyone in authority take a look at this unusual betting pattern? I think we should be told.
One possibility is that a telephone tipster got a Chinese whisper. It was not Battalion ‘off for its life’ but Enigmatic, which won the claiming stakes on the same card at 2-1, heavily supported.
Enigmatic is trained Jamie Osborne and was ridden Dougie Costello. Both Battalion and Enigmatic are owned by the Melbourne 10 Racing Club.
There was fair warning after the meeting that the Melbourne 10 have 23 horses with Osborne and intend to land about 30 races to win the AW title this winter.

CIAO, I’M HOPING NAP LANDED AT 1pm
1.00 Wolverhampton Ciaoadiosimdone (one of those that could be pronounced a million ways until you spot what they have done) looks the nap on the Wolverhampton card.
She has been highly tried so far and that’s putting it lightly. She started off in a Listed race at Newmarket and actually ran with credit being beaten less than five lengths but has since struggled at Windsor and Newmarket (again in Listed company).
She has been given a rating of 85 which, even allowing for that being optimistic, should see her romp this opener at Wolverhampton which looks a weak affair. She is 10lb clear of her nearest rival Meccabah which should just leave only the David Simcock trained debutant Mundersfield as the biggest threat, but this one hasn’t attracted much interest in the morning BETDAQ market.
Meccabah, trained by Andrew Balding, is very exposed but has the blinkers fitted for the first time today. Her best effort came at Goodwood when beaten a nose but that was over a two furlong longer trip and she was a beaten odds-on favourite at Kempton last time out over a similar trip as today. I would be disappointed if Ciaoadiosimdone wasn’t good enough to beat her.
LANDIN SOME EARLY VALUE
1.10 Plumpton Neil Mulholland has the short priced favourite in the opener at Plumpton but the stable is only one winner from their last 43 runners. Not for me with those stats especially after a long lay off.
Landin battled on well to win at Worcester last time out and should be suited by the softer ground. His form figures don’t look sensational but when you dig deeper he has contested some top races and performed with credit including a 14 length eighth to Defi Du Seuil in the Triumph Hurdle. How does that look in the context of an ordinary Plumpton novice hurdle on a soggy Monday ??? !!!
