ANOTHER PIPE GAMBLE TODAY: Daqman lumped on David Pipe’s Painter Man on Tuesday. Now he’s over the moon at another Pipe gamble at Huntingdon today
The Oscars looked set for centre stage. Two 3m Cheltenham winners at today’s class-2 level, by the prolific sire Oscar, should find the 3m 2f at Huntingdon (3.10) no problem.
Sir Kezbaah hasn’t been seen since April but worries about his condition fade alongside Jeremy Scott’s devastating form of recent weeks. And ‘Kez’ has form after a break of 212.
The best-supporting Oscar should be the Paul Nicholls’ Oscargo, who is looking for revenge over Dorset Square, who beat him at Cheltenham.
But Oscargo was favourite that day on his first run back and Harry Denham’s 7lb today is full value for every ounce.
It all looked so easy, then came another David Pipe bombshell in Rose Of The Moon, an early-doors plunge: forecast 10-1, but 3.4 as I write.
Remember Painter Man on Tuesday? It’s is the same story, with Rose Of The Moon: blinkers for the first time. The difference is that Painter Man was top weight and had one or two negatives.
But Rose Of The Moon is bottom of the pile, plus a claimer’s 3lb, taking him to a massive three stone from Benny Be Good, the forecast favourite.
Rose Of The Moon finished in the front rank of a big field for the Martin Pipe Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and no doubt the blinkers today are the test of what would be a lowly handicap spot for a similar contest at the festival in a few weeks’ time.
And that of course is the snag with any Cheltenham trial, like this Pertemps qualifier: there are those needing weight on and those needing weight off, according to their estimated position in the big handicap on the day. But ‘Rose’ looks almost certain to bloom this afternoon.
The 2m 6f and more is also a long way to go at Fontwell, an even more arduous trip in that the ground is on the heavy side.
Once again, Pipe has a contender: his runner-up on the course at a furlong shorter, Clever Dick, was being punted close on even money this morning.
Very hard to find an alternative but this is class-4 level, and I shall just use Clever Dick as a saver for Rose Of The Moon. Trying to be a clever dick!
