THREE NAPS UP OUT OF FOUR: RUBY OWED HIM: Daqman made a profit for the second day running when Ruby Walsh landed his nap on Last Time D’Albain (WON 7-4) at Punchestown, making up for his last-gasp defeat on Shooters Wood on Tuesday. Our man’s current naps form is now 31121.
‘LAST’ IS FIRST TWICE FOR DAQMAN: Daqman also scored yesterday with Last Fighter (WON 15-8), completing a coincidence double of horses called ‘Last’ that finished first.
43 POINTS PROFIT ON THE DAY: Albasharah (WON 11-4) was a third Wednesday winner for a Daqman profit on the day of more than 43 points.
1.50 Saint-Cloud (Criterium International) English and Irish raiders are four out of six in this, and have two of the six runners today.
First-time blinkers and an extra furlong may help Ralph Beckett’s Anna’s Pearl, fourth in a big sales race at Newmarket.
Jim Bolger’s Irish raider Loch Garman has already sluiced through the mud at Navan over today’s trip, albeit in a time so slow the starter walked round to greet him at the winning post.
My idea of the winner is US Law. The Lawman grey went down to Pearl Flute in the early autumn but strode clear of Kenhope on heavy over today’s CD three weeks ago. Improver.
2.20 Saint-Cloud (Prix Perth) This used to be an English preserve, with Tom Jones, Michael Stoute and Paul Cole scoring in successive years in the 1980s.
Today Hughie Morrison tries to follow up on more recent success by John Gosden (2), Roger Curtis and, last year, Roger Charlton. Hughie’s colt Chil The Kite has progressed nearly 20lb, winning a Chantilly Listed on very soft ground last time out.
The more likely winner, however, is Dux Scholar, dropping down a grade after a narrow defeat in a Group 2 at the Arc meeting. In the frame 16 times from 19 starts.
2.50 Lingfield (Fleur De Lys Fillies’ Stakes) Three-year-olds are six out of nine. Winners had already taken a Listed or been Group placed.
Of the older fillies, Libys Dream, Night Lily and Valencha fit the pattern-race criteria, and so do Appealing and Sentaril of the second-season animals.
But Moone’s My Name is deservedly favourite for consistency on any ground, and because Appealing, Baheeja, Instance, Libys Dream, Sentaril, Valencha and Villenueve are winners only up to 7f.
Moone’s nearest market rival (it’s 8.6 bar two as I write) is Sentaril, who threw away a Group 3 at the St Leger meeting by hanging across the track. May need an easier surface.
3.20 Lingfield (River Eden Fillies’ Stakes) Another big-field Listed triumph for Lingfield, as the fillies swerve the soft ground on turf to try to get black type in better conditions.
Three-year-olds are four out of six but none has carried more than 8st 9lb., and no older filly has been able to carry the penalty, as Polygon has to.
Saeed Bin Suroor has had four runners in the race: second and third in the same year, then back-to-back wins by the only older horse to beat the three-year-olds. He has one of each generation today.
His well-bred 3.0 favourite as I write, Surprise Moment, is unbeaten but has to step up from a class-3 handicap and so-called second-string Rumh, a winner in a higher grade and successful on Polytrack, seems better offers at 7.6. This fierce field should bring her stamina into play.
John Gosden also has two runners, Tempus Fugit lightly raced and with the potential to take a step forward, and Polygon, a winner on firm and soft but with that penalty. So it will be a surprise moment if Godolphin get beat.
7.10 Kempton Saeed Bin Suroor has a hot strike-rate in handicaps at Kempton, and over all tracks hits 28% with horses making their handicap debut.
All-the-way winner over 7f, Volcanic Wind’s mark of 87 looks like a mistake by the officials. Despite a front-running ride with nothing else making a race of it, the time was fast.
Basseterre is consistent and Kiz Kulesi could improve on a light profile, but Volcanic Wind looks a stand-out, having worked impressively since, and 3.6 on BETDAQ this morning may well be generous.
JUMPS: While we’re saying goodbye to Kauto Star, Denman is on the lips of form students at Stratford, where Whisky Yankee (1.10) and Polly Peachum (2.40) come from his dam’s side. ‘Polly’ misses Ascot Saturday for this.
In theory, the solo ride on Vasco Du Ronceray (1.30 Hereford) is worth the additional mileage before A P McCoy does his Stratford stint.
It was a surprise to see McCoy’s mount, Twirling Magnet (3.40), drift like a lonely dog on a raft, way over the betting weir at 17.0 this morning.
Instead, with rain forecast, all the barking was for Godsmejudge, with Alan King now an incredible 17 out of 19 horses in the frame of those that have completed in the last fortnight.
The one he has to beat is Safran De Cotte, useful over hurdles but who was always going to be a chaser. Has won after a long absence before now and 7.2 may look generous later on.
