BETDAQ BEATS THE BOOKIES: DAQMAN HAS 13.0 CARRUTHERS: This bet, secured in this column by Daqman for today’s Welsh National, is proof if you still need it that FANCIED HORSES are fantastic prices at the exchange offers ante-post on Betdaq.
BANKER TODAY AFTER WINNING BOXING-DAY NAP: Daqman yesterday landed his nap, Deireadh Re (WON 6-4), and other returns included O Crotaigh (WON 4-1) and Grands Crus (WON 6-5). He has a banker bet today.
1.30 Chepstow Cadoudalas (13.0 on Betdaq this morning) gets his ground at last; but he’s high in the ratings now and his success on heavy came from the front, which will be hard to do today.
Consigliere (18.0) has the going to suit for the first time in many a day and his rating has dropped 7lb since he ran fourth at the Cheltenham Festival in a Grade 3.
At the same festival, Nadiya De La Vega was only 11th in a Listed, and owes her reputation to spreadeagling a small field at Haydock when the favourite fell.
Quincy Des Pictons comes up from minor meetings with a 12lb penalty but Plein Pouvoir (well supported to 7.6 this morning) returns to track and ground he likes off a light weight.
Pigeon Island and Take The Breeze are likely to go well without winning but I prefer CD scorer Chance Du Roy; runs off his highest mark but, at age seven, is still potentially on the upgrade.
2.10 Chepstow (Welsh National) Carruthers, Giles Cross, Le Beau Bai and Viking Blond have a big advantage as previous chase winners at Chepstow, according to the stats.
Giles Cross is a big player, as a heavy-ground lover, runner-up in two major marathons, the Eider and the Welsh National, and he looks the place bet of the race but he’s nine now, going on 10, and young horses usually win this.
Viking Blond looks a strong stayer, is with the right team of Twiston-Davies, but has never won outside the novice ranks; six-year-olds have a modest record and he runs with a bit too much exuberance.
Like Viking Blond, As De Fer goes up with the pace and may not last home. On the other hand, come-from-behind horses cannot afford to give too much start; playing catch-up in the mud won’t be easy.
Our Island is progressing rapidly and, by Turtle Island, is bred to race ankle deep; has he recovered from his exertions when going down narrowly to Cannington Brook 10 days ago? Again, he’s only six.
Galaxy Rock and Hey Big Spender look high in the handicap now; Cappa Bleu may bounce from winning after a long absence; Any Currency prefers the going on top, and Master Overseer has to prove that his last run, when beaten favourite, was a blip.
I’m sticking with Hennessy winner Carruthers but will spend my overs on Le Beau Bai and Giles Cross. Le Beau Bai is 12lb lower than for a previous third in this race.
2.40 Kempton (Desert Orchid Chase) Wishfull Thinking has looked sluggish since his return, whereas Finian’s Rainbow has always been sharp as a razor first run back and his Cheltenham second to Captain Chris now looks premier league after that ones King George third.
That was his only defeat over fences, and he’s reported in ‘tremendous form’ by Nicky Henderson. Banker.
2.45 Chepstow (Future Champions Hurdle) How come Hollow Tree is favourite? On a line through Secret Edge, he cannot beat Countrywide Flame.
Unfortunately, the race is not run on a ‘true surface’, so I won’t be backing my opinion at the odds available. This field is mainly Flat-bred, and they are running on heavy ground.
I shall have my pound on School For Scandal to cause an upset, for these reasons: he’s bred for a bog; he stayed on when outpaced on a sounder surface last time; he’s blinkered first time; and he’s 18.0 on Betdaq.
