SUIT YOU SIR! 5-2 BANKER AND 10.5 BETDAQ VALUE FOR GLORIOUS DAQMAN: He’s done it again! The man for the big occasion wasn’t content with a normal nap on Strong Suit (WON 5-2) on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood but made it a full-blown, maximum-stakes banker. And he had a 7-1 winner at 10.5 on Betdaq to boot!

7-1 SHOT NABS THE PRIZE IN OUR MAN’S ONE-TWO: Daqman named Namibian (WON 7-1), fearing only the neck second Fiorente, opposed a hatful of previous winners in the first race as lays, and was absolutely spot on with Strong Suit: ‘the form is very solid.. class all the way.’ His current naps and bankers sequence now reads 1201121111011122401.

FRANKEL v CANFORD CLIFFS: Daqman has already previewed the form and careers of each horse (see archives for Monday) and now sets the scene for the race.  He has 20.0, 17.5, 14.5, 13.5, 10.0 bets today and tries a massive Daq Multiples accumulator.

Can you name this horse? He has beaten into a place the winner of the King George, the winner of the Irish Derby, the winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the winner of the German 2,000 Guineas. How about this one? No Classic winner ever in the frame behind him.

You would obviously want to back Horse A to beat Horse B. If I told you that Horse A has to give 8lb to Horse B and is Timeform rated – weights taken into account – 10lb in front at 150-140, you’d be happy to take odds on, wouldn’t you?

If I tell you (do you need me to?) that Horse A is Frankel and Horse B is Canford Cliffs, it looks all over bar the shouting: Frankel’s home and dried; the fat lady is singing.

And yet there is that niggling doubt, caused by two major differences between them that has you moving your chips nervously from odd to even and back, from black to red and return. The first big difference is temperament. The second is that Frankel has so far raced only against his own age. It may not be black and white after all.

In which case, at the prevailing tight margin between them, the laws of value dictate that the wheel is spinning a zero. It’s showtime. But only the house wins.

2.00 (Goodwood Stakes): If you stick with horses aged four and five, you’ll get 8 winners out of 10 in this. But you’ll have to face down Ollie Pears, who says the ‘monster’ running today is not Frankel but Cesarewitch eighth My Arch, 13.5 on Betdaq as I write. He fears neither the trip nor the weight in this company.

Spirit Of Adjisa will relish the marathon and of the younger horses, from that winning age range, I’d want to be with Cosimo De Medici (17.5), the choice of Richard Hughes, who thinks the gelding needs a trip.

2.35 Goodwood (Vintage Champagne Stakes): Richard Hannon, who won it last year for the first time this century, seems determined to pop the cork again, with four of the seven runners. Since even the sixth to finish of the seven runners gets enough for a few bottles of ‘shampoo’ (£810), Team Hannon can’t lose.

It says a lot then that Red Duke ousted that quartet and took over the market lead early doors: after all he’s already beaten paper-favourite Chandlery. But, then, so has Lethal Force (in the Coventry).

Clive Cox, trainer of Lethal Force, has won it before with a horse in the frame in the Coventry, in which Chandlery – better off with Red Duke now – had little or no chance from a bad draw. I’ll take Lethal Force at 6.2 with a stakes saver on Chandlery.

3.10 Goodwood (Sussex Stakes): The history of this race – and I mean the entire 133-year history – says that Canford Cliffs won’t win: no Sussex Stakes winner has done it again the following year since its inception in 1878.

Ever since Frankel streaked away with the 2,000 Guineas, the one question was: what would happen if he ever met Canford Cliffs? After ‘Canford’ beat Goldikova at Royal Ascot, the question became not ‘if’ but ‘when’.

I described the career of each horse in Monday’s column (see archives); you can find speed and power in both horses: the only thing that is impossible to find is collateral form that gives you an edge between them.

But temperament may. Many a Frankel type – though not of his ability – has boiled over, ‘beaten himself’ in the end, and the manner of his just holding off Zoffany at Royal Ascot will frighten off bankroll backers today.

Sir Henry Cecil, Knight of the Rose, says he has a cunning plan in this potentially tactical race, but it could turn out to be a Baldrick plan, since the Hannon camp could easily make him go on.

Tom Queally is then faced with a choice: use the quarterhorse charge we saw in the Guineas, or try to conserve it until the business end and constrain him, maybe from the front. At Newmarket in the Spring, he wouldn’t have handled that. By now he should have matured enough to deal with it. If not, he’s cooked.

If he can wait behind but goes too soon, he’s also dead meat, since Canford Cliffs is a king alongside the pretender Zoffany. So it is that Tom Queally must defuse a time bomb with one hand, with a shock new ‘final edition’ of the News Of The World in the other.

Racing is on the edge of its seat, straining to see the miracle happen or waiting for the last bad headline. But certain life is about to be changed forever.

3.45 Goodwood: Whatever beats the classy Sadler’s Risk wins. He was just behind yesterday’s winner, Namibian, at Newmarket in April, with the Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up, two lengths in front of him, and two lengths in front of that a colt placed twice in Derby trials.

Then he ran fourth to Treasure Beach and Nathaniel in the Chester Vase, trying to make all. But there is no Irish Derby or King George winner to catch him here, yet he’s 10.0 this morning.

His trainer, Mark Johnston, ‘does a Hannon’ and runs four, and Silvestre De Sousa sticks with Greyfriars Drummer (14.5 this morning), who suffered from a slow pace at both Ascot and York. There’s no Risk of that this time (pun intended).
