12.05 Haydock Tom Lacey switched Glory And Fortune from the class 2 at Ascot yesterday back to novice company here, looking for better ground.
This giant of a horse likes to lead but so does Ballinsker, if his Ludlow win is any guide, and we know the 3m Irish Point winner is likely to be staying on, so big at 8.0 on BETDAQ.
So, too, Torn And Frayed, who ran a cracker over 2m 5f at Warwick, giving weight to the winner. Snag is he wasn’t too fluent and today’s shorter trip will need even faster hurdling.
Calva d’Auge’s success, Flat and Jumps, has come on very soft ground, and Young Lieiutenant has given the impression he needs half a mile more than this. Thebannerkingrebel is too short for what he’s done.
12.40 Haydock Sue Smith, who won this last year with Vintage Clouds, prepped her North Yorkshire Grand National winner, Sharp Response at Kelso, but she’s had 76 straight losers in 213 days.
Tom George’s form is not much better (1-18) and it seems to be a question of who can stop the Twiston-Davies team right now.
His Kim Muir fourth Crievehill won the Bobby Renton at Wetherby and has been placed four times in row at Haydock. Solid win and place at 7.8
Though a good winner of a veterans race on the last day, Burtons Well doesn’t stand much racing and it’s a long shot – not a favourite’s chance – that he can put two wins together at his age.
TAKE A SHOT AT THE SHERIFF!
1.50 Haydock Bold Plan could be a ‘hidden horse’. He’s won or been placed in four reappearance runs but was asked win the Grade-3 Silver Trophy at Chepstow on his return this time. Well backed at 7-1, he was out of his depth but today is much easier.
Whoshotthesherrif (BETDAQ 8.0) had every chance at Cheltenham in October when he fell and was ultra-consistent early in the year.
2.05 Ascot Altior is stepping up in trip. Or Cyrname is on his seasonal debut after a long absence. Those are both red lights which will warn punters trying to choose between horses which are just a pound apart in the ratings.
Cyrname won back to back over today’s course and distance at the turn of the year, and normally you’d guess that he would kick on and outstay the two-miler, but is he match fit against an Altior unbeaten in 19 starts in over four years.
A STABLE BREAKING RECORDS
2.25 Haydock David Pipe, who won this three times between 2010 and 2013, relies on Umbrigado, three times a winner around this time last year but who failed to make the step up into Graded company at Aintree.
Pipe may have his best chance today with Know The Score (3.40), who looks a solid stayer in the making.
The early money was for Tedham and Breaking Waves. Tedham also flopped (beaten favourite) at the big Aintree meeting; he should enjoy the step up to 3m but could do with softer ground.
Breaking Waves, 9.4 in the BETDAQ orange this morning, stayed on behind Lisnagar Oscar at the turn of the year and may also appreciate today’s trip, as half-brother to a 3m 2f scorer out of a mare who is sister to a Scottish National winner.
His stable is in cracking form with a 50% strike rate in the last two weeks and current figures of 1112.
Lisnagar Oscar (11.5 offers) should confirm form at the revised weights of his 10-lengths victory here at Haydock last season over Ask Ben and Stoney Mountain.
Eight And Bob is 2-2 over 3m for Willie Mullins and Robbie Power, but was not fancied this morning at 21.0, and Robbie has other major chances today with Lostintranslation and Glory And Fortune.
2.40 Ascot (Coral Hurdle) Previous winners, If The Cap Fits and Lil Rockerfeller, take on versatile Le Patriote, winner of the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr and the Swinton at Haydock – both around 2m – but split by a 2m 4f plus success at Cheltenham. That’s some hat-trick (I took 8.4 on BETDAQ this morning).
If The Cap Fits beat Cheltenham Mares Hurdle winner Roksana a head over further in the Liverpool Hurdle at today’s weights.
Except for his third in the Imperial Cup (2m), Call Me Lord is still living off his demolition of Lil Rockerfeller, Wholestone and Old Guard at Sandown in April 2018.
The market says he comes here in that form. He certainly has one thing in his favour: Nicky Henderson says nothing much about him in his Racing Post stable tour. All those he raved about have been beaten since.
HAYDOCK BELONGS TO BRISTOL
3.00 Haydock (Lancashire Chase) Runner-up twice to Defi Du Seuil, including in the JLT at Cheltenham, Lostintranslation was boosted when Defi defied Politologue at Cheltenham last week.
Frodon was beaten on his reappearance because they took the fences away in the glare of the sun at Aintree, and the Ryanair winner was staying on as though today’s trip is now what’s needed.
Bristol De Mai comes alive at Haydock, going for a hat-trick in this race, and unbeaten on the course with form figures of 1111.
That’s what shades it for me, with Frodon needing to confirm that he’s just as good, or better, at this trip and with Lostintranslation 9lb inferior, according to the handicapper.
3.20 Ascot The Last Day’s Aintree victory a fortnight back was so impressive to the handicapper that he’s raised him 11lb but there was nothing of any substance finishing behind him to warrant such a walloping.
If you re-evaluate the finishers from last year’s result (the 1-2-3 was Caid Du Lin, Speredek and Marracudja), Speredek comes out well on top.
But he needs to have come on a lot from his seasonal debut behind Capeland (disqualified) and Diego Du Charmil (placed first), with Capeland (BETDAQ 4.9 taken) well placed to get his revenge.
