HERO CALLED TELEMARK

⭕ 2.00 York The class-2 mile handicap to launch John Smith’s day at York has gone eight years running to a single-figure stall and an obvious strong contender must be the Crisfords’ Telemark out of gate 8.

Last year’s winner, Blue For You, is 2211 at York when having a rating below 100; he’s now on 95 but has to get across from a high draw.

⭕ 2.50 Newmarket Qirat looked like a horse in need of knowing when sixth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. Who better than Ryan Moore to get the best out of her today.

VARIAN VERSUS HAGGAS

3.10 York (John Smith’s Cup) For the last three years, stalls 1 to 10 have produced three of the four places: 1, 3, 10; 10, 3, 8; 2, 6, 3. Before that consecutive winners came out of 3, 6, 7.

On a good or easy turf surface Botanical’s form is 111 and he comes out of 6, but the handicapper has hit him 20lb for two wins in his last three starts.

His Roger Varian stablemate Enfjaar showed impressive improvement when passing his first test at Chelmsford after a gelding op. BETDAQ 8.7.

William Haggas also has two, both well drawn: Remaadd (stall 2 at BETDAQ 12.0) and Kingfisher King (8), with Remaadd very lightly raced but placed at Listed and Group-3 level, and Kingfisher King, never out of the first four, last seen here at York, but off the track 274 days.

INISHERIN-VANDEEK CLASH

⭕ 4.35 Newmarket (July Cup) Khaadem and Inisherin both won for me at Royal Ascot but the die is cast: I put Inisherin into my FORTUNE COOKIE list of horses to follow.

Khaadem is a once-a-year horse or, at least, needs a gap between races. Contrast with the admirable old–timer Kinross, who has put two or more wins together three years in a row.

But this is a race for young horses and Inisherin was ridden clear in the Commonwealth Cup (Jasour third).

River Tiber was third to Rosallion in the Irish 2,000 Guineas but was twice beaten in the late summer last year by Vandeek, first on very soft then on good to firm.

Vandeek was four-lengths third to Inisherin in the Sandy Lane at Haydock in May but the Crisfords stable was out of form at that time.

It re-emerged recently and hit a potential seam on the July Course yesterday with two out of two, including a Group 2, for a 41-1 double.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.15 Inisherin, 5.8 Vandeek

SOSIE FOR THE GRAND PRIX

⭕ 7.17 Longchamp (Grand Prix de Paris, 1m 4f soft) In pubs and clubs, in the Press and on computer, they’ve run many a ‘race of the century’, trying to compare the likes of Sea The Stars, Galileo and Frankel.

All three have sons to represent them in this £300k grand prix, bringing together leading three-year-olds from England, Ireland and France.

FORTUNE COOKIE Sosie (Andre Fabre), by Sea The Stars, may not have been an unlucky loser (not much room two out) but might have finished closer to Look De Vega in the French Derby, needing today’s extra furlong and a half.

Illinois (Aidan O’Brien), by Galileo, whose winning form is the 1m 6f of the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot, is headed for either the Goodwood Cup or the Great Voltigeur as his route to the St Leger. He’s half-brother to Danedream who won the Arc!

The Arc is already being talked about for the Frankel bay Delius (Jean-Claude Rouget), who moved up to Group 3 for his third strike in a row the last day at Chantilly, beating Saganti. This is his first top test.

I can’t remember a filly winning this but David Menuisier has booked Oisin Murphy after four rides at Newmarket to follow up here on Ramfana, his mount when beaten just threeparts of a length in the French Oaks.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
