SAUVIGNON BETDAQ VALUE

⭕ 1.15 Cheltenham (Triumph Trial) The second odds-on Triumph Trialist this week after the workmanlike win of Palladium.

Can the bay East India Dock do better? The half-brother to Greatwood winner, Burdett Road, has been odds on three times already, winning them all on good ground, the last another Triumph Trial here in November by 18 lengths, after scoring at Wincanton.

Hot Fuss and Static, runners-up in those races, both subsequently flopped – fourth and fifth – in the Finale at Chepstow.

The easy winner at Chepstow was a French raider and, presumably with that in mind, the handicapper has placed Sauvignon a pound in front of East India Dock.

Sauvignon won a Listed at Auteuil in the summer, beating Sony Bill, who was third in a Leopardstown Grade-2 juvenile on Boxing Day to Hello Neighbour, who is just behind East India Dock in the Triumph markets for Cheltenham.

There may not be much between East India Dock and Sauvignon but the difference in the betting was staggering this morning: as I write at 9.30, Betdaq Betting Exchange offers are 1.6 East India Dock, 9.1 Sauvignon (3.1 a place, two places).

IMPERIAL HAS THE MEASURE

⭕ 1.50 Cheltenham The form horses are a headache. Ginnys Destiny is good at Cheltenham but in the Turners, he split Grey Dawning (twice beaten since) and Djelo, twice beaten since but 13 lengths clear of Ginnys Destiny in the Peterborough Chase, after Ginny had pulled up behind stablemate Il Ridoto in the November Gold Cup. See what I mean?

Il Ridoto, a previous winner of today’s race and third in it last year, has Freddie Gingell claimed off, but his best form is on a sound surface. Still a puzzle within a puzzle, isn’t it.

At these times, I go for improvers and hidden horses. The improver is Imperial Saint, winner of four out of five over fences, three of them in handicaps. BETDAQ 5.8 taken

The hidden horse is a John McConnell with his favourite English jock, Sean Bowen, booked. Moon D’Orange has a light weight and could be anything, well backed down to 5.8 offers.

PERFECT CHASE FOR PRESSE

⭕ 2.25 Cheltenham (Cotswold Chase) Venetia Williams has found regular winning opportunities for L’Homme Presse since he took the Brown Advisory here in 2022 but he’s also done good at the very top.

Fourth in the Gold Cup and third in the King George were both aiming a bit too high but this drop back to a Grade 2 looks perfect as long as he is not a man in a hurry.

The Nicky Henderson magic is not beyond bringing back Chantry House, three years on from his Cotswold victory, as he proved over CD on New Year’s Day but he hasn’t put two wins together since the Spring of 2021.

Gentlemansgame also showed a glimpse of former glory at the end of December but has to give weight all round here.

Delta Work is more used to the cross-country course and Stage Star is asked to stay this trip for the first time in his life and bounce back to the hat-trick he scored here in 2023.

UP HILL IN SECOND GEAR..

⭕ 3.00 Cheltenham (International Hurdle) I had a go at Nicky Henderson’s odds-on shot, Palladium, and bagged a 50-1 second.

But the 2023 champion-hurdler Constitution Hill need hardly be out of second gear in this, rated between 29lb and 50lb up on anything else in a race which is hardly International.

FAMOUS PLAN 22.0 A YEAR ON

⭕ 3.15 Doncaster (Great Yorkshire Chase) It should be close again at the revised weights between Frero Banbou and the favourite he beat, The Changing Man, after their one-two in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle in November.

But three weeks later The Changing Man ran second again to another Venetia Williams three-miler, Victtorino, and in fact has yet to win a chase.

Forward Plan has Doncaster form of 123 and amateur Chad Bament’s 10lb claim takes his weight down close to his winning form and a pound below his runner-up mark in this last year.

Charlie Uberalles, who was third, won over the CD in December, receiving a stone from Forward Plan, who was in third himself this time so, again, it’s down to Chad Bament to make a difference.

Snipe is consistent: placed first or second in six chases out of eight. But my fancy is Famous Bridge.

Joint favourite for today’s race last year, he made a bad mistake at the third fence and had to be pulled up. Headgear on now.

Famous Bridge was fourth in the Ultima at the Cheltenham festival, not seen again until the autumn, quietly ticking over with the Great Yorkshire in mind. Betdaq Betting Exchange 22.0 taken, with 4.7 a place.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
