WET AND NOT-SO-GLORIOUS GOODWOOD: Strange gambles, big-odds winners, horses finishing as if in a steeplechase. It’s not-so-Glorious Goodwood in the rain.. Or is it? One major media site and one top-line bookie announced this morning that the Saturday meeting had been abandoned, while the Racing Post insisted: Goodwood ‘probably missed the worst of the rain.’

DAQMAN 41-19 UP ON PRICEWISE: Says Daqman: ‘I’ve included some words of wisdom about Newmarket in case we lose Goodwood but I hope my sole supernap of the meeting gets a run.’ Daqman leads Pricewise 41-19 in the Flat season and has tipped 65 winning naps this year.

DREAM START FOR MARQUAND

⭕ 1.50 Goodwood (Stewards Cup Consolation, 6f) Rain or no rain, this has been a pinstickers’ race in the decade, with only one winning favourite among nine outsiders.

You need a bet in each group, with the stands’ rail doing best for the last two years but low numbers taking the sprints here yesterday.

Many A Star won last year out of stall 12 but is in 4 today in different conditions, and winning jockey Tom Marquand has switched to Capote’s Dream (in 3), who could have his day a stone lower than at this time last year.

In his journeyman style, Luke Morris has won at Nottingham and Goodwood in the last two days, and his mount here, Cooperation (gate 3), has been nine times out of 12 in the first four, winning on the soft at Salisbury.

BETDAQ value 11 Capotes Dream, 15 Cooperation

IMPRESSIONIST PICTURE PERFECT

⭕ 2.25 Goodwood (Summer Handicap, 1m 6f) A good start has been essential to winning even the longer races this week, as dead ground underfoot has counted against the late challenger.

HMS President races in touch after connections learned the lesson in this very race last year, when he was held up in the rear and never got to the leaders.

As a result, he caught dead-heaters Adjuvant and Torcello a neck at Newmarket in May over today’s trip in similar conditions. Torcello, who has won here over 1m 4f, is best in at the weights on that Newmarket form.

Euchen Glen is another example of the need to ‘get with it’ early on in a Goodwood race: he ducked left at the start in this last year, but finished third, after being repeatedly denied a clear run. At age 10, he’s a brave option.

Sweet William seems to prefer a sounder surface but, as a half-brother to Hurricane Lane (Arc third on heavy), he could be ok.

Post Impressionist went right away from his field at York 1m 6f (class 2, soft) in October, and Tom Marquand has won Goodwood Group races this week with Quickthorn, Desert Hero and Hamish.

BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE short list 3.45 Sweet William, 9.6 Adjuvant. 11.5 Post Impressionist, 19 Torcello

FREE WIND SUPERNAP OF THE DAY

⭕ 3.00 Goodwood (Lillie Langtry Stakes, 1m 6f) Free Wind (nap) is six out of eight since her debut, including the Lancashire Oaks on soft ground last July, when she was dropping back from scoring at today’s trip in the fillies’ St Leger, the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster. Better than evens on BETDAQ this morning.

DETTORI HUGE ON HANNON TIPPLE

⭕ 3.35 Goodwood (Stewards Cup, 6f) Winning stalls have been (low) 1, 4, 1, 3 and (high) 26, 22, 25, 19, 17, 23, 16, so mainly in the extremes along the rails.

Vintage Clarets (stall 3), who ran here on Tuesday, has never won over 6f but could put pace into the far side, where Aleezdancer (gate 2) will be to the fore in first-time cheekpieces.

He is 7lb better with his stablemate, the 2021 Ayr Gold Cup winner Bielsa, for three-and-a-half lengths on York form in May, which may not be enough.

With Oisin Murphy riding Charlie Johnston’s Lion of War at Saratoga, Ryan Moore steps in for the ride on Bielsa, who is drawn at the other extreme in 26.

Bielsa was behind Apollo One (second), Juan les Pins (3rd), Mums Tipple (4th), Orazio (6th), Mr Wagyu (7th) and Kings Lynn (9th, badly drawn)) in the Wokingham at Ascot but that was on firm ground.

Mums Tipple (from 5) handles soft ground and Frankie Dettori retains his Wokingham ride, with the Richard Hannon team having won two at Goodwood this week.

Orazio (out of stall 6 today) had scored twice on soft ground before Royal Ascot; Apollo One (27) is up in the weights but in one of the extreme stalls. Spanish Star (17) is a CD winner four times on the soft.

Betdaq Betting Exchange short list: 5.1 Orazio, 18.5 Bielsa, 23 Mums Tipple, 35 Spanish Star

BUICK WONDER AT NEWMARKET

⭕ 2.05 Newmarket (6f nursery) William Buick, who swerved Goodwood and landed two winners here at Newmarket yesterday, rides Woodhay Wonder in this among five bookings which should have a happy ending with Soul Seeker (5.00).

Woodhay Wonder won well at Newbury but was no match for Group-2 fillies the last day here. Could shine again, dropped into this class-2 handicap while she’s still on the boil. BETDAQ 8.5.

It’s incomprehensible that no one wants the ‘head waiter’ Jamie Spencer for the Stewards Cup. His mount here, Tierney, has already won a nursery in a lower grade.

⭕ 2.40 Newmarket (1m 4f Listed fillies and mares) Six times in eight runnings since this race was moved from Newbury has the winner come from stalls 1, 2, 4, 5.

John Gosden, who has won three of the eight, saddles Newbury winner Sweet Memories out of stall 2, partnered by Hollie Doyle another top jockey switching from Goodwood. BETDAQ 5.1 taken.

Sunset Point is up in the ratings and rises in class, whereas Curragh Cup third, Amusement, drops down three grades.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
