DAQMAN’S YOUR TOP BOY AT 9-1: Daqman, who landed two BETDAQ gambles on Thursday, did the same again yesterday – only at even bigger prices – with winners at 9-1 and 13-2 which he had spotted at 12.0 and 8.8. Here are the two-hits-a-day value bets:
Thursday
WON 9-2 Rockspirit (from 9.4 BETDAQ)
WON 7-2 Naggers (from 7.6 BETDAQ)
Friday
WON 9-1 Robot Boy (from 12.0 BETDAQ)
WON 13-2 Poet’s Vanity (from 8.8 BETDAQ)
THE BATTLE OF THE CESAREWITCH: Pricewise, who trails Daqman 74-33 for value winners in feature races this season, has Thunder Snow (3.30 Newmarket), Get Knotted (3.45 York) and, in the Cesarewitch (4.10 Newmarket), Sea of Heaven, Starchitect and Sweet Selection. What will Daqman respond with?
GRUMETI 33.0 FOR BACK-TO-BACK WINS
4.10 Newmarket (Cesarewitch): In a shocking turn-about, seven out of 10 horses getting the ABC best of my stats and facts (see Wednesday’s column) are drawn out in Suffolk!
Just look at them: stall 23 Sweet Selection, 25 Moonmeister, 26 Starchitect, 27 Star Rider, 30 Renneti, 32 St Michel, 35 Havana Beat,
We’re left looking more closely at stall 1 Sea Of Heaven, 7 Grumeti, 8 The Cashel Man, 14 Wind Place And Sho, 15 Golden Spear.
Sea Of Heaven should have been given ‘ABX’ status in the list. With stablemate St Michel badly drawn, Sea Of Heaven now becomes Sir Mark Prescott’s main hope.
The one with multiple stats is now last year’s winner Grumeti with ABCEX. In fact, Grumeti and Oriental Fox, the 2015 one-two, have both been handed low stalls and, on a sound surface, weight is much less of a worry for the Fox.
Grumeti has been saved for the race again (Aaim To Prosper won it twice recently 2010 and 2012). As a marker, Oriental Fox is 6lb better for a length and a half with St Michel on their Goodwood one-two.
Verdict: Pricewise has three in this, so I’ll take Sea Of Heaven at 12.5, Oriental Fox 18.5 and Grumeti at 33.0. Grumeti is at worst a 20-1 shot, and I will bet (pot of gold) the five points I would need for a ton-up at twenties at the 33.0
CHURCHILL A BANKER IN THE DEWHURST
1.45 Newmarket: Three-year-olds are seven out of nine in this, including a run of four in a row for William Haggas, who has two turf hat-trick winners in the field today.
Symposium stepped up three grades in little more than three weeks, and Gravity Flow ramped up an even steeper trajectory with a ratings rise of 22lb from her summer treble.
Mise En Rose is already 7lb and 16lb ahead of the Haggas pair but has never in her career raced over 6f; her success has been at 7f (2) and a mile, and her high rating has come from Group-3 placed efforts.
Gravity Flow and Mick Channon’s Kassia (holds Futoon) both have wide draws but Charlie Appleby (Mise En Rose in first-time cheekpieces) won with a filly from stall 17 last year, following winners in the previous years from 10 and 15.
Symposium’s three wins have all come under Georgia Cox and Josephine Gordon. Ryan Moore, who has been riding a winner a day average in October, will be keen to get even more out of her: 9.4 on BETDAQ early mouse.
2.55 Newmarket Normally weaker than the next race, the Dewhurst, but in 2013 produced Kingston Hill, winner of the Racing Post Trophy and, the following year, the St Leger.
Another from the Aidan O’Brien Galileo forge, The Anvil – out of a Rainbow Quest mare – has already finished second in the Group-2 Royal Lodge (Sea Fox third, Montataire remote).
But Lockheed has run third in the Group-1 National Stakes, finishing well, though at a respectful distance from the winner, Churchill.
However, there’s collateral form which brings them together: The Anvil was a neck off Best of Days in the Royal Lodge and Lockheed threeparts of a length behind Best of Days in the Acomb. The Anvil has the stamina in his pedigree.
3.30 Newmarket (Dewhurst Stakes) This race has thrown up Frankel, Dawn Approach and New Approach, but also – last year – Air Force Blue, who didn’t train on.
As ever, you have a choice in two-year-old tests: you can follow collateral form, which is dodgy while horses are improving, or you can speculate on that improvement.
Collaterally, since Mehmas beat Blue Point a neck and Churchill beat Mehmas more than four lengths (Lockheed third), it would appear to be no contest between them.
Seven Heavens beat Lockheed only a length in July, so also appears to bow to the Churchill form. Rivet and Thunder Snow finished neck and neck in the Champagne whilst South Seas maintained his unbeaten record with a win in the Solario Stakes at Sandown beating Salouen who went on to finish runner-up in the Group 1 Lagardere at Chantilly.
Verdict: At 1.75 Churchill (pictured) is a gold-status banker for 30 points win.
CHANCE 23.0 THE HORSE CALLED CHEVAL
3.45 York: Captain Colby’s had only five races this year and connections will want to strike again while the ground is dry: 5.9 best offers.
Roudee won the Ayr Silver Cup but that was on the soft and Get Knotted, who likes firm, could turn around the one-two that day on better terms.
But, on the other side of the draw, Sir Robert Cheval, 23.0 in the BETDAQ orange this morning, is well in now with Normandy Barriere, who I turn holds Get Knotted on Doncaster form. Sir Robert gets further and will appreciate the fast pace and stiff finish.
The hidden horse of the race is 38.0 offer Orva, a Group performer last year (once got within four lengths of Shalaa). He has moved from Richard Hannon to ace sprint trainer Robert Cowell. James Doyle booked.
