70 POINTS PROFIT FROM THREE WINNERS: Daqman landed 70 points with three winning bets yesterday, two to win 20 points and one of them his nap, Roly Poly, staked for a 30-point hit.
WON 13-2 TANGLED (from BETDAQ 8.0)
WON 6-4 ROLY POLY (15-point nap)
WON 11-8 CLEMMIE (12-pointer)
HALF-CENTURY ON TIPPING SCOREBOARD: Pricewise was whitewashed again as Clemmie took Daqman 216 points clear in their value challenge to single-unit stakes, with his winning returns now on 50. Pricewise is stuck on eight.
*Today’s races: 2.50, 3.25 Newmarket. 1.55, 3.05 York. 2.10 Ascot
BETDAQ 12.0 COULD BE A GIFT
1.55 York Tim Easterby, who landed a double here at York yesterday, has One Word More and Just Hiss in this, both drawn a bit high. Gates 2, 3 twice, 5, 6 and 7 have won the race in the last eight seasons, and I prefer to sprinkle small stakes in that stalls area.
A 12.0 BETDAQ offer early mouse, Kings Gift, fourth to Barney Roy in the Greenham, is dropped from the Pattern for the first time since back-to-back wins late last summer, and is handily drawn in stall 6.
Next door in 5, General Macarthur was also in the Pattern at one time under Aidan O’Brien. Has dropped 10lb since joining David Simcock, and Andrea Atzeni takes over. Also 12.0.
They’re shy of Arcanada (17.0 from stall 2) because he’s top weight but has a useful claimer and beat Banksea over t his CD last August. Looks as though earmarked for this.
2.10 Ascot Which side will they go? Jockeys changed tack on the straight course– preferring one rail then the other – at the royal meeting, and backing one each side today, in extremes of the draw, is usually best but I think the low numbers have it with Yalta to tow them and, as a Mark Johnston, to potentially last into a place, despite 17.0 offers on BETDAQ as I write.
Another one dropped from the Pattern (won the Molecomb last year), Yalta (stall 3) led here at Ascot for most of a 6f Group 3 in the Spring.
Kyllang Rock has gone close the last twice but that has lifted his rating 16lb and first-time cheekpieces wlll have to make a huge difference. Danzeno (15) and Edward Lewis (6) ran well in the Wokingham.
2.50 Newmarket That draw effect at Royal Ascot also has a bearing on this race on the July Course. City of Joy (not clear run) was in 17 when the first three in the Britannia came out of 3, 1 and 7.
A 3.55 BETDAQ offer this morning, City of Joy (twice hampered and switched) is expected to reverse placings with Afaak (seventh when he was 10th). Mountain Angel may be better than the bare form.
CONCERTO THE CUP CHOICE
3.05 York (John Smith’s Cup) This is usually won by a horse aged four or five, with the occasional three-year-old, and last year’s seven-year-old hero at 18-1 was the exception to prove the rule
This is run 20 minutes before the Bunbury Cup, which includes Tashweek and Tabarrak, third and fifth, from the Royal Hunt Cup. Splitting them, fourth horse home, was Ballet Concerto (checked in his run), winner of the Spring Mile, so twice proven in big fields this season and whose dam was a winner at today’s 1m 2f.
What worries me more than his step up in trip for this is his middle draw, albeit he’s right on the edge of the favoured slots: 12-22 have won eight of the last nine. But James Doyle is in good form and I’m glad to see him given the job.
Jeremy Noseda landed a gamble at this trip at the July Meeting yesterday with Marzouq and now saddles Sixties Groove (in gate 14), who has stayed on well in handicaps at Epsom and Royal Ascot and is given the same chance off 98.
Uae Prince (out of 20) is very lightly raced and could play a part in the finish: 11.0 but being backed when I cheked the orange. Ballet Concerto opened 10.5.
Wolferton winner at Royal Ascot, Snoano has never put two races together before and the penalty should stop him.
THIS IS TASHWEEQ’S BIG DAY
3.25 Newmarket (Bunbury Cup) Everything raced centre or stands side in the Consolation race won by Parfait (stall 2) yesterday. The overall leader on the far side (from 14) faded into 12th.
Three-year-olds don’t win this; nor do seven-year-olds; nor, in the last nine years, those carrying less than 9st.
So we might be down to eight of the top 11, where 6.4 BETDAQ offer Tashweeq is shortest after his close third in the Royal Hunt Cup, dropped from the Pattern. Tabarrak, three lengths behind him, is 6lb better off but in the coffin-box one stall today.
Steady Pace (forced to switch) was beaten only half a length in the Wokingham) but his sole success in 16 starts since he broke his maiden was on Dirt in Meydan, though he hasn’t been out of the first four in six starts after being gelded. Tough but probably in the handicapper’s pocket.
Tony Curtis is interesting in his first handicap, despite 50.0 offers on BETDAQ. He raced five out of six times in the Pattern over 1m and 1m 2f up to last August in small fields and they might let him fly out of the traps over this 7f.
Bossy Guest is now down 13lb since he was placed in the Jersey Stakes (2015) but there have been 14 defeats since.
If you believe that Lewis Edmunds is full value for his claim, Mutawathea is 6lb lower than his last year’s mark when he was third in this race, trying to make all from gate 9. He’s in 10 today and could play catch-me again, but this is a professional rider’s race.
We can only guess whether Flaming Spear can translate Newcastle Tapeta form to turf and I prefer sequence-horse Gossiping who loves winding through horses, but he’s been spanked by the handicapoer for his last-day success.
I said avoid three-year-olds but Sir Dancealot (26.0), dropped from the Pattern, is with a trainer who loves to cock a snook at the big boys and at any stats convention.
If he has solved Sir Dance(not)alot’s reluctance to start, he will be there at the finish at this lower level, despite a cruel handicap mark.
4.15 York There was keen interest with the bookies last night for Bounce, and I was glad to see 15.0 available for the Henry Candy filly from BETDAQ layers this morning.
She has worked splendidly of late and already has black type to her name so won’t be out of her depth as the betting suggests.
Take Cover is giving her six years! Cotai Glory and Goldream are horses where everything has to fall into place.
TASLEET LOOKS HUGE AT 9.4
You have to wait for the two biggest races of the day. Both have a short-odds star which this column ‘found’ earlier in the season but are completely different, with one demanding we move all in and play up 25-1 Classic winnings from the Oaks with a banker.
In the other, the July Cup, you decide whether you are with the favourite or against him. In fact, the weather could decide for you.
4.35 Newmarket (July Cup) In the good old bad old days, we’d have billed this in the Press as the race of the century. Let the track do its own grandstanding but it’s certainly the sprint showdown of the year.
However, if there has been rain this morning, as forecast, it may have scuppered the hopes of last year’s winner, Limato.
More than a shower or two and you’d have to bring in Brando. Just enough to take the sting out of it and you’d want to be with the ever-improving Tasleet, who split The Tin Man and Limato in a bumping match at Royal Ascot.
The Tin man was a bit lucky to emerge the winner as the placed horses suffered. But we seem to be making excuses all the time for Limato and my Candy man was not his usual bullish self this morning.
Caravaggio beat Harry Angel in the Commonwealth Cup but that race represented a big leap for Harry as he climbed the Group levels, and it was three-year-old against three-year-old. Caravaggio is too short.
The experience of four-year-olds (five in eight years) is usually required to win this and, at the offers on BETDAQ, Tasleet’s 9.4 looks huge, and allows for worries about him handling the track.
You won’t strip much of the profit margin by having a stakes saver Caravaggio at around 6-4.
5.55 The Curragh (Irish Oaks) I’m hoping to make a 50% profit from Enable at some stage of the day. Stablemate Coronet looks the only danger but – I’ve said it before – Enable is the best middle-distance animal of this Classic generation, ahead of those Derby colts who keep changing places.
