DAQMAN 70-13 UP AT THE START OF EBOR DAY: Dartmouth was in front before the line and after it, but lost the headbob and Daqman’s nap yesterday. Then Lady Aurelia went down by a nose, too, as Frankie Dettori lost his head, celebrating victory on the loser. You know it’s a weird day when Pricewise gets one back on Daqman! The scores are now 70-13 with Daqman 306 points clear.
FIVE BULL’S-EYE BETS FOR 50 UP AT YORK: Daqman wants a winner and an outsider in all the big races at York and Goodwood today, hoping for 10 returns from five races. His bets include 22.0, 19.0 and 14.0 offers on BETDAQ. There’s a banker at Goodwood and five bull’s-eye bets at York.
INTELLECT A LIKELY IMPROVER
2.25 York (Melrose Handicap) This is a now a good prep race for the three-year-olds ‘St Leger handicap’, the Mallard Stakes at Doncaster. Wall Of Fire won both races last year.
The 9.0 BETDAQ offer Intellect, with just three runs to his name for a stable in form, is by Nathaniel, who gets rapid improvers in their early races (like a certain Enable).
He looked the part at Newbury under Ryan Moore, who misses the mount today because he’s at Saratoga for Idaho.
On To Victory had the Queen’s Vase third, Secret Advisor, behind when runner-up to Londinium at Goodwood but that one let the side down yesterday.
Londinium was only fifth in the race won here at York by Fidaaway who, like Intellect, is trained by Sir Michael Stoute.
In fact, The Grand Visir (13.0 offers), a Frankel colt out of a Montjeu mare, having only his fifth run today, could overtake the exposed On To Victory if earlier Newbury form is to be believed.
Bin Battuta’s form is good but he tends to be a tardy starter and making up ground at York is not easy over any distance.
MUKALAL LAID OUT FOR THIS..
2.45 Goodwood Last year’s one-two at a difference of 5lb from stalls 6 and 13 were Certificate and Suzi’s Connoisseur, who meet again in quite different circumstances, with Certificate now giving away 19lb and both drawn high (in gates 12 and 17).
Winners by stall in the decade have been 9, 6, 8, 3, 5, 8, 7, 7, 5, 6, and today’s big field will be even more strongly against high numbers, as they are thrown out wide and forced to fall in line and, at the same time, the lowest of the low (in 1 and 2) will be scraping the paint to hold their place.
That optimum draw between four and seven off the rail (securing 8 out of 10 winners) has us choosing from Ultimate Avenue, Burnt Sugar, Swift Approval, and Raucous.
The local horse Mukalal (in 9), laid out for this and a 12.5 offer in the BETDAQ orange, has raced from the front and been placed over a mile at Chelmsford in good company. This looks an ideal track for the drop back to 7f.
Stewards Cup third here last summer and often a Group contender, Raucous could improve for the step up by a furlong, and Jamie Spencer stands by Ultimate Avenue (6.6 favourite), also up from 6f after a good late run on the July Course when first-time tongue-tied.
NIFTY NEBO CAN TAKE GIMCRACK
3.00 York (Gimcrack Stakes) Cardsharp, Nebo, Frozen Angel and Headway are all within the ratings parameter of 104 to 110 usually needed for this, with the best of recent winners the subsequent British Champion, Muhaarar (2014).
Muhaarar’s trainer, Charlie Hills, now saddles Nebo. Dual winning trainer Kevin Ryan (Astaire and Blaine back to back), who won at this Ebor meeting this week with Flaming Spear, fields Stormbringer, which has that ‘could be anything’ look, and a likely outsider at 22.0.
Collateral form has the Coventry Stakes (Rajsinghe beat Headway a head) inferior to the July Stakes (Rajsinghe well beaten by Cardsharp, with Invincible Army fourth).
Nebo (a 6.2 BETDAQ offer) was down the field in the Coventry but had earlier finished in front of Cardsharp at Goodwood on soft ground, with Headway behind, and was pipped a head by Gustav Klimt at the July Meeting on a sound surface.
3.20 Goodwood (Celebration Mile) Lightning Spear’s close proximity to Minding (Hathal behind), then Ribchester and Ulysses, suggests the entire is banker material here.
In keeping with my day of finding a long shot to go with the main bet, I fancy Richard Pankhurst (14.0 on BETDAQ) can show his true colours at last.
BATTEREA POWER FOR THE EBOR
3.35 York (Ebor Handicap) Winners in the decade have started at 100-1, 33-1, 25-1 (twice), 20-1, 14-1 and 12-1, to name but a few of the shocks, as they say.
Could this have something to do with the melee of horses on the inside. Certainly results by stall suggest that they get crowded out. Only one single-figure stall has won in the decade. Seven winners came from 14 or higher.
Battersea (BETDAQ 11.5 FROM stall 15) will be 2lb lower plus a 5lb claim than when fourth last year and I trust Roger Varian more than the trainer of the fifth horse that day, Seamour. On a line through Top Tug, Star Storm has it to find with Batterseaa.
The 13.0 BETDAQ offer Dubka (in 19) has just missed out on big prizes in Group company and this could be ideal. Difficult to split Flymetothestars and Natural Scenery on Newcastle form but ‘Stars’ (9.8 on BETDAQ) has a good high draw in 21.
