14.0 GAMBLER HOLDS THE CARDS

⭕ 2.25 Goodwood Tacarib Bay won at Haydock with cut in the ground but there are red flags: three-year-olds have won this race only with lightweights, and stall 11 is a big blow for jockey Pat Dobbs.

William Buick must deal with the same problem on Oo De Lally, a wide berth in 10, and ground to make up on Tacarib Bay from the Haydock race.

Orbaan won the Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood from gate 2 and has the one stall now but prefers to come from the rear anyway. His problem is a hike of 12lb in the handicap.

This in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot in June, Rhoscolyn is one of the few to beat the draw at Goodwood: he was always holding Oo De Lally (gate 2) when allotted stall 11 last Spring on the soft.

But an 18 draw knocked him back in the Golden Mile in July; and no help at all giving 12lb to Orbaan!

Also denied a clear run from 11 was CD-winner The Turpinator, who has soft-ground winner, Ascot Adventure, breathing down his neck at revised weights.

I’m A Gambler also won at the Glorious meeting; this is a harder race but he’s well drawn for Team Johnston who often farm Goodwood and, when the Gambler has struck form before, has always held it well.

Lyndon B’s Goodwood form is 321 but he’s six now and never yet been able to score in class-2 company.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 5.4 Rhoscolyn, 14 I’m A Gambler, 13.5 Ascot Adventure

CLASSY EXISTENT IS BULLET PROOF

⭕ 2.40 Beverley (Bullet) Last year’s winner from stall 6, Tis Marvellous, is now an eight-year-old rated 5lb higher in 7.

In fact, older horses do well in this and, in actual weight, he’s saddled with only a couple of pounds more than last year, which suggests that today’s race is that much easier. So is the ground, and that’s no problem to the one-time Wokingham runner-up.

Alia Choice, Burning Cash, Mondammej and Our Little Pony are coming out of the high stalls which have never won this race (none from a double-figure draw in its entire history; not a one!).

Korker was third at York at this Listed level (reluctant to load), 9lb high than when winning a class-3 on the same course in the Spring.

Existent is dropped out of the pattern after six Group races, the notable one when a neck runner-up to Khaadem in the Palace House Stakes.

He was further behind Khaadem at Goodwood but that was off a 5lb higher mark and Khaadem is still improving; fourth in the Group-1 Nunthorpe.

Arecibo has had eight Group races since Royal Ascot 2021 but among them have been three defeats at Listed and handicap level, and he weakened behind Khaadem, Existent and (in 6th) Tis Marvellous in the Palace House. Ainsdale has similar form.

King Of Stars was second in a similar big-field sprint at York but – his 11th run since a win – it’s put him back up the handicap.

BETDAQ value 4.5 Tis Marvellous, 12 Existent

HOO YA! BETTING SIGNS ARE MAL

⭕ 3.00 Goodwood (March Stakes 1m 6f, Group 3) LAYS LOGIC Hoo Ya Mal puts his St Leger and Melbourne Cup plans on the line at longish-odds-on here but has only ever won his maiden, always a bad sign.

He’s a horse with good rhythm and he’s hunted up winners of the Irish 2,000, the Epsom Derby, the Jersey Stakes and the Saratoga Derby but he never beats them.

He’s 15lb, 32lb and 52lb clear of his three rivals in the ratings today, two of them progressive, winners twice in their last four starts.

Hoo Ya Mal is also having his first test on soft ground; he made his (losing) debut on heavy but that does not count as ‘form.’

I was staggered when I heard that Gai Waterhouse was taking him on for Flemington: he may win today or he may give grounds for tearing up the deal; I don’t know.

But, as another bunch of losers called British politicians are fond of saying these days, ‘what I can tell you’ is that, if you offered me 4–1 on, I would prefer to lay than to bet.

I’ll have an interest via an improver, Perfect Alibi (BETDAQ 5.4), who is entered in the Fillies And Mares on Champions Day.

Her trainer, William Haggas, could complete a double on the day with Grocer Jack (6.35 at Windsor), though another improving filly, Achelois (BETDAQ 7.2) is in the way.

DANEH CAN SCORE ON THE SOFT

⭕ 3.15 Newmarket I think Sam Maximus (drifted from 8-1 to 25-1 when books opened) as unplayable as Saint-Maximin, who looks odds-on to score or assist – or both – for Newcastle against Wolves tomorrow. If only racing were so easy.

This 6f sprint is appropriately called the Hopeful Stakes, but it’s a Listed which suggests a filly trying to get some black type.

Sure enough, here’s Daneh trying to resurrect her promising two-year-old form, getting all the allowances for a stable in hot form (35% strike rate).

Daneh will love the soft ground, whereas Great Ambassador’s success has all come on the firm; ditto last year’s winner of this, Summerghand, who beat Tabdeed that day and is weighted to do so again.

Vadream is a Group-3 winner on the soft but blinkers failed her at Deauville the last day and she’s switched to cheekpieces here.

Mo Celita won a Listed like this at Deauville (soft) just over a year ago, and the booking of Frankie Dettori today looks significant, with Adrian Nicholls having had a couple of winners lately.

BETDAQ value 8.2 Daneh, 18 Mo Celita

RELY ON CROWLEY CELEBRATION

⭕ 3.35 Goodwood (Celebration Mile) The day’s big races are a contrast: £70,888 to the winner of a Group 2 at Goodwood, depleted to just five runners amid the news that the fixture list will not be changed until 2024.

The Irish Cambridgeshire, worth 59,000euros, has 26 runners and it’s 8.3 the field in the BETDAQ exchange market.

Grocer Jack’s form (6.35 Windsor tonight) would be boosted in the Goodwood race by Finest Sound, who beat him at Newbury.

But Team Crisford also run Jadoomi, a relatively unexposed Listed winner who will enjoy the give in the ground but has to step up a couple of grades to take this.

Escobar ran well at York but is 0-9 at Goodwood, and Mutasaabeq (BETDAQ 2.18) should grind this out on a course Jim Crowley rides so well. Beaten a head and a neck in Group-2 events this season.

GOOD CHANCE OF IRISH DOUBLE

⭕ 4.15 The Curragh (Irish Cambridgeshire) Good Heavens! J P McManus fancies a Cambridgeshire double for his lightly-raced three-year-old of that name, ridden in the Irish version today by boy-wonder Dylan Browne McMonagle, who has a 22% strike rate for the three-year-old’s trainer Joseph O’Brien.

Good Heavens is number 37 in the 30-maximum Newmarket Cambridgeshire in a month’s time for a race the Irish have not won this century, and success today would ensure his place in the field of probables. Tony Martin trained the last winning Irish raider, She’s Our Mare, in 1999.

BETDAQ value today: 8.5 Good Heavens
