RIGGS THE SKELTON PLOT
⚠️ HEADS UP: Faivoir at Ascot yesterday was Dan Skelton’s 1,000th winner, taking a match race after three false starts involving Cascova, who refused to race.
Skelton has 10 runners today at Ascot (5), Haydock (4) and Huntingdon, with brother Harry, joint fifth in the jockeys’ table on 40 winners, riding at Haydock where the leader with 95, Brian Hughes, also has four mounts.
⭕ 2.25 Haydock An old-fashioned big-field long handicap survives amid the general dearth of runners. It’s usually won by horses with quality aged five and six (8-10) off 10st 11lb or higher (9-10), so no wonder the overnight gamble was Orbys Legend.
Orbys Legend was impressive the last day, winning in the Grade-3 Silver Trophy at Chepstow on good ground, and his brother Morning Spirit got 3m.
The Skelton runner, Riggs, with only 10st 4lb, has won just once in 14 starts but the trainer insists that he has been laid out for the race, up in trip to 3m.
Rightplacerighttime was also a money horse and also only 1-15 over hurdles, though he did win over fences the last day, and such is the constitution of many an Irish jumper that the difference between sticks and birch doesn’t seem to bother them.
There’s not much between Bass Rock and Flight Deck in separate efforts against Tees Components Lad.
Dans Le Vent has a touch of class but (like Doctor Duffy, Ask Dillon and Stoney Mountain) is eight now, nine in a few weeks’ time. If The Cap Fits is already nine.
The history of the race tells us that Dan Skelton has won this before with Baradari (2015) but he was a Grade-2 Ascot winner, so was big value at 12-1!
David Pipe has won four times in the last 11 years. The question is whether his pair will get the ground soft enough. Pipe has always thought Martinhal a three-miler; unexposed after just five hurdles starts but with a rival from his own stable, the grey Brinkley.
Brinkley has won three from six over hurdles up to 2m 7f but pays for it with 11st 9lb. Martinhal, who beat Orbys Legend as a novice, is related on the dam’s side to a Midlands National winner.

⭕ 2.40 Ascot (Coral Hurdle) This was to be one of the kingmaker races for Fortune Cookies but the Grade 2 that has been won by Annie Power, Faugheen, Rock On Ruby and If The Cap Fits is depleted like everything else today and following the winner cannot be automatic. We’ll see.
1: Buzz Hurdles career put on pause to take in the Cesarewitch, which he won first run back since his second in the Aintree Hurdle in the Spring. Gets his ground here, and is rated an 18lb better animal than when landing a handicap at this meeting last year.
2: Guard Your Dreams Improver from a stable in form. Grade 1 placed in the Spring and won at this kind of trip on good ground, despite top weight at Cheltenham last month.
3: Molly Ollys Wishes Dan Skelton late improver. He says she’s following the Roksana route; well, that one was only fifth of six in this race despite the mare’s allowance which Molly also gets today. Won on good to soft the last day but best form on soft-heavy.
Goshen Another soft-heavy winner, including the Kingwell at Wincanton in February, when he ran clear of Song For Someone. Still only five but has been in and out and may need rain.
Song For Someone Coral Hurdle winner last year, unchallenged. Likes cut in the ground but not heavy. Wind op since defeat by Goshen and – never travelling – behind Buzz in the Aintree Hurdle.

⭕ 3.00 Haydock (Lancashire Chase) This is Bristol De Mai’s annual treat. He’s won it three times since he took the race over in 2017 from another three-time winner, Cue Card, but a couple of youngsters catch the eye.
1: A Plus Tard Today’s good-to-soft surface should suit, as it did when he was second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup after he beat Irish Gold Cup winner, Kemboy, in the Savills, also on yielding.
Never out of the first three, he’s still only seven and further improvement is likely for Henry De Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore..
2: Bristol de Mai Can he emulate Kauto Star who won it four times, also in a broken sequence? Bristol’s defeat after two hits in this came when he split Lostintranslation and Frodon in 2019 on a sounder surface but got his revenge on heavy last year.
3: Royal Pagaille The second youngster. Landed a hat-trick on soft-heavy, including over CD here in January, following his Haydock novice-chase win last December. More to come with more rain.
Waiting Patiently Probably his career best when, after a break, runner-up to Frodon in the Ladbrokes King George last December. Also placed behind top chasers Cyrname and Defi Du Seuil but a 10-year-old now and relying on a third change of stable to revive him. Brian Hughes stays faithful.
Imperial Aura Novices winner at Cheltenham Festival in 2019 and up 20lb over the last two years until flopping (bled and had wind surgery since) in the Ryanair in March. Goes well fresh and further progress would put him bang in the big time.
