Harry Fry had three hits in five days just before Cheltenham and American, who won the novices (at 2.25) here on this day last year, swerves Cheltenham for this (ran in the Gold Cup last year): 12.5 offers.
Ballydine (at 15.0 this morning) should relish this step up in trip. Was being trained for the 4m NH Chase last year but things went wrong and he was off the track 301 days before improving his rating 7lb with places in the Mandarin and the Peter Marsh.
Ms Parfois is on a dangerous mark if back to her best, a sequence winner who ran second to Rathvinden in the NH Chase at Cheltenham last year: 9.8 taken.
Arthurs Gift is another potential stayer, back to form last time and with the right outfit for a National.
Folsom Blue and Milansbar (twice runner-up in this race) are ever-presents in these stamina tests and either or both could run into a place without having the finishing burst to win at age 12.
FARMER CAN LAND 10.0 RETURN
2.25 Uttoxeter Only one in this field has already won over 3m and on heavy: Captain Cattistock, who might just about turn around Chepstow placings with De Rasher Counter with conditions in his favour.
De Rasher Counter had Polydora a long way behind at Newbury after that one had given weight and a beating to Late Romantic at Newcastle.
A stone down the handicap is the Smiths improver Lough Derg Farmer, reckoned to have ‘a lot of class’, a star handicap stayer in the making. Things haven’t all gone right but he’s just back to winning form and a tasty 10.0 on BETDAQ.
2.40 Kempton (Silver Plate) The last four winners have all come from the high end of the handicap, which suggests that quality will win through.
Burrows Edge was a neck second here on his reappearance and looks well placed to win this for Nicky Henderson, who had four winners at Cheltenham.
Star Of Lanka was fourth in his only handicap, the Lanzarote, over today’s course and distance here at Kempton.
But the one I fancy at 4.5 BETDAQ offers is My Way. I’m not normally keen on maidens but he’s unexposed at this trip and was third to One For Rosie last month.
Rosie went on to Sandown and was beaten a short-head in the NH Novices’ Handicap Final by Third Wind, who had beaten My Way into second at Taunton earlier. That all sounds rock solid, as form that’s reproduced.
