SUPERNAP ON THE BETDAQ CARD AT KEMPTON: Daqman names a supernap for the big BETDAQ day of sponsored racing at Kempton Park this afternoon, as he lines up 40 points clear of Pricewise, with scores of 18-10 and a level-stakes return of +33 to -7 to single-unit stakes.
DAQMAN’S FIVE PROFITABLE DAYS OUT OF SIX: Daqman landed his seventh winner in six days, shading a profit for the fifth day out of the six, with Kalahari Queen (WON 100-3), following winners at 3-1, 4-1, 5-1 and 7-1, including three successful naps.
HENDERSON TRAINING LEGEND
1.15 Kempton (Back or Lay On BETDAQ Handicap Hurdle) Last year’s winning favourite was the first for yonks, with five out of nine winners a double-figure SP. As more often than not these days, the top half of the handicap is the place to look.
Nicky Henderson was adamant that only soft ground at Taunton prevented a Monbeg Legend four-timer, and he’s down a grade here.
Stablemate Take To Heart, the royal runner, won twice at a lower level on summer ground, and you never know with tricky Nicky, who also saddles Premier Bond.
After winning at Cheltenham, Master Dancer was fourth in the Ladbrokes Hurdle. Dropped a grade from that day, must surely be involved.
Django Django beat nothing well at Huntingdon after his main rival blundered but this is a new trip. The line came just in time for Awesome Rosie at Sandown. She’s had a rest but looks exposed.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: Our Kaempfer (Martin Pipe), The Mighty Don (Coral Cup, Pertemps Final or Martin Pipe), Master Dancer (Coral Cup or Pertemps Final)
TODAY’S VERDICT: Master Dancer (BETDAQ 8.2 early mouse) and Monbeg Legend (BETDAQ 7.6) are both down a grade. Kings Walk has been primed for the race and Django Django is expected to improve.
BETDAQ RACE CYRNAME’S ARKLE
1.50 Kempton (BETDAQ Now 2% Commission Pendil Novices’ Chase) Frodon last year was one of seven Pendil winners in the decade for Paul Nicholls.
But Paul could saddle one of his best yet in Cyrname, who is seen as a horse of the future, so no rush to Cheltenham. This is his Arkle.
Philip Hobbs, who won it with Captain Chris (2011) – went on to win the Arkle – today saddles For Good Measure, a decent hurdler but full brother to Balthazar King, a Cheltenham cross-country champion, so a serious contender today.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: The Unit has five festival entries but his chase rating is stuck on his hurdles mark and he needs to find more.
TODAY’S VERDICT: A small but select field, with Cyrname’s fitness taken to win the day, a supernap returning more than six for every 10 bet this morning. His three rivals have all been absent between 107 and 133 days.
PRETTY BOY PERFECT ADONIS
2.25 Kempton (BETDAQ Changing For The Bettor Adonis Hurdle) Success in this came on the first outing in England for Zarkandar (2011), who went on to take the Triumph Hurdle. His trainer, Paul Nicholls, has won it twice since. He’s two-handed today, trying to stop last year’s winning Alan King yard, which has the favourite, Redicean.
Paul’s filly, Malaya, and Sheena West’s Harmonise get some help at the weights.
A bigger danger may be the Guillaume Macaire raider Beau Gosse (‘pretty boy’). He means business, tongue-tied first time, and has shown ability on the drying ground.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: Redicean and Harmonise (both Triumph or Fred Winter), Bid Adieu (Triumph)
TODAY’S VERDICT: Redicean is 2-2 at Kempton and hard to oppose, with money only for the favourite.
But, as BETDAQ punters know, that means a tempting market (up to 43.0 with just 106% overround) and, since Redicean is class 4 on form and Beau Gosse has won a Listed, I’ll take the 4.5 BETDAQ offer.
THEATRE CAN OUTPLAY ACTING
3.35 Kempton (BETDAQ Handicap Chase) I went in ante-post on one of my Fortune Cookies at 9.2 on BETDAQ.
Tintern Theatre has already scored over the CD at Kempton. It was not only the manner of his success – ‘readily’ – but what he beat that makes him a standout.
The second horse home, Pilgrims Bay, had won today’s race last year, and the third horse to finish, Theatre Guide, was the winner of it the year before!
Pilgrims Bay made the form look classy by running close up in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury just before that second to Tintern Theatre in the Kempton contest over Christmas.
Tintern’s theatre of war is the fast track, although he ran well in the Peter Marsh at Haydock in January until tiring on very heavy ground.
He gets 11lb from sequence winner, Acting Lass, who may not be helped by the drying ground but is unexposed at the trip and bred to do well.
The ground has come right for Paul Nicholls’ Art Mauresque and Jonjo O’Neill’s burgeoning front-runner Go Conquer (16.0 on BETDAQ). In the same period of time – roughly two years since the Spring of 2016 – Art Mauresque has improved 6lb but Go Conquer 29lb.
I can’t have another Nicholls, As De Mee (for the life of mee!), with his awkward head carriage, but Master Dee (9.6 BETDAQ offers this morning) has never been out of the frame in his 20 starts!
VERDICT: This is a cracking Grade-3 contest. Obviously BETDAQ sponsorship of the Irish Champion Hurdle is a shining highlight but punters love decent handicaps of this level and quality. They’ve got value here in a 106% BETDAQ book, yet it’s 5.3 the field.
Master Dee must be a solid win and place, and I’ll have a pound on Go Conquer.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: A whole host of Cheltenham entries here but, with a £57,000 first prize from BETDAQ, they will all be pressing the button today.
ENJOY YOUR BETDAQ RACE-DAY
4.10 Kempton (BETDAQ 2% Commission Exchange Handicap Chase) Kayf Blanco has yet to score over fences and his hurdles successes were on the soft. Rothman is a desperate bridesmaid (10 times second) and I’dliketheoption beat a poor field at Market Rasen.
No Ceiling has never won this far and front-runner Fourth Act makes mistakes so I’m taking a punt.
VERDICT: Enjoy Responsibility (10.0) is a different horse on a sound surface.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: I’dliketheoption (Stable Plate)
4.45 Kempton (BETDAQ Free Trading Tools Standard Open NH Flat Race) Pym and Danny Kirwan have gone clear in the BETDAQ orange for this bumper. Last-time winner’s have won three of the last four but only two favourites have won in the decade.
CHELTENHAM PLANS: Pym, Danny Kirwan (Champion Bumper)
VERDICT: Pym won a race which Nicky Henderson has used to launch a star (Sprinter Sacre) and 3.15 on BETDAQ this morning may look good value after he’s won
GET AN EDGE IN THE EIDER..
2.45 Newcastle (Eider Chase) The 2012 winner (Portrait King, going good) and 2015 scorer (Milborough, good to soft) turn out again on heavy ground today.
They’re up against the 2017 Midlands Grand National winner, Chase The Spud (up 19lb), and the Highland National winner of last Spring, Boric (15lb higher), in a war of attrition in the mud.
Vinnie Lewis is on a hat-trick but has had a rest since winning the Sussex National (heavy) in early January, 23lb higher now than for the first leg.
My choice, West of The Edge (9.4 on BETDAQ) is consistent and likes trip and ground for Dr Richard Newland, who has had three winners from his last four starters.
Similar observations apply to Hainan, with Sue Smith 2-4, still standing. I took 8.2, again on BETDAQ because of it.
Henry Daly is 5-9 but Back To The Thatch is up in trip and class, and will need to trace some DNA back to the dam’s half-sister, Grand National winner Papillon.
Lopchnell can trace his ancestry to another National hero, Rhyme ‘N Reason but is 10lb out of the handicap here. Millicent Silver is 14lb.
Milansbar won the Warwick Classic but that’s put him back up the handicap. Houblon des Obeaux often places in these marathons but wins only small-field races these days.
CLEAR VALUE ON BETDAQ AGAIN!
3.15 Lingfield (Winter Derby) I previewed this race before winter even set in. And warned that Aidan O’Brien would raid with Clear Skies.
Couldn’t get a price anywhere then but glad I waited to see a weaker field and 3.85 on BETDAQ, when the orange of only 107% overround suggests that we punters have got value yet again.
