DON’T MISS YORK NEXT WEEK WITH DAQMAN VALUE LEADER: It’s not one of the year’s best home Saturdays. No Group 1, no big-field handicaps, and plenty of rain about. But look out for the five-day York Ebor meeting next Wednesday, with the Great Voltigeur, Yorkshire Oaks, York International and the Ebor itself. Daqman will be looking for the BETDAQ bargains, big value that has seen him take a 27-7 lead over Pricewise of the Racing Post. Can he increase that lead at Newbury today?

DETTORI DEAUVILLE DOUBLE BID

⭕ 1.35 Deauville Group-1 action today is in Germany, where Barney Roy tries to take the Preis Von Europa in Cologne.

Frankie Dettori has to quarantine over York by riding at Deauville, Mishriff in this Group 2, and Palace Pier in the Jacques Le Marois tomorrow, both for John Gosden of course.

Mishriff’s arch-rival is the Andre Fabre colt he beat into third in the French Derby, Victor Ludorum, who ran a strange race, limiting his chance on the wide outside.

The Summit has been second to both. Not a betting race for me.

RELYING ON GUARDI’S STAMINA

⭕ 1.50 Newbury A real teaser of a 2yo test with four debut winners. One of them, Chorizo, hasn’t added to that in three more starts. Like William Bligh and Saint Lawrence, he has experience which the others have not.

Jumby won well at Ascot and Francesco Guardi at Salisbury, while Golden Horn’s half-brother Dhahabi, a son of Frankel, looked to have a real future when scoring on the July Course.

The snag is the soft ground (Golden Horn himself didn’t like it). But Francesco Guardi (BETDAQ 5.9), whose dam is a half-sister to Treve, should not only like it soft but also find it calling for his stamina, which he showed late on to power home at Salisbury.

GROUND RIGHT FOR OVERWRITE

⭕ 2.25 Newbury Afaak has been second (firm ground), then first (soft), then seventh in the Royal Hunt Cup, and races off his winning mark today.

He seemed to be going easily in the Golden Mile at Goodwood on the last day, blinkered first time, but the blinkers didn’t stop him edging right at the business end. Always a strong traveller, often with not quite enough left.

He and York winner Orbaan give age and weight all round, and I’d fancy some young blood to strike close home.

Tempus is unexposed and the market says there’s no time like the present; he’s won before after a long holiday, though soft ground would be the ultimate test of his fitness.

Something entered the mind of Jahbath when, despite four wins in a row, the vet had to get the gelding shears out. A similar story with King Carney: good form, then snip! Are connections thinking about hurdles later on?

The answer may be a typical gritty Mark Johnston front-runner Overwrite (BETDAQ 8.9), dropped back in trip. Might have won the Britannia on the soft but rider lost her whip. It’s always difficult to catch anything that leads on soft ground.

TAKING PROGRESSIVE ALIGNAK

⭕ 3.00 Newbury (Geoffrey Freer Stakes) Morando gave lumps of weight to the winner when second in this last year, and he beat Sextant six lengths in the Cumberland Lodge on soft.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Alignak has progressed 19lb this year and likes cut in the ground, while one-time Derby hope Hukum came good the last day, and three-year-olds have won two of the last three Geoffrey Freers.

Both Max Vega and Communique have done well at Group-3 level but it looks a threeway scrap at the front of the market with tight offers of 4.4, 4.5 and 4.9.

I’m working on the basis that Stoute can win one of the two big races with either Alignak (4.5) or Dream of Dreams (3.3), and I’m adjusting my stakes for break even if I get one winner from four.

GAMBLING ON STOUTE DREAMS

⭕ 3.35 Newbury (Hungerford Stakes) Though Glorious Journey won this last year on soft, he vulnerable now to the youngsters. Older horses (over four) have failed to win in the decade.

But for the second Group race running, we’re asking: can Sir Michael Stoute get more out of yet another older horse?

After Alignak, he now saddles Dream Of Dreams, who improved for gelding to close down Hello Youmzain to a head in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, after that one beat him easily at Haydock.

Dreams was subject of a gamble this morning for his in-form stable. He was second in this race in 2018 when he had a mind of his own!

The handicapper put little Surf Dancer on the crest of a wave for his York Listed success, hiking him 12lb. He’s still half a stone or so short of William Haggas’s last three-year-old winner of this, Adaay.

Threat must not only bounce back to Gimcrack and Champagne form of last season but must do it with cut in the ground; those top juvenile successes were on firm.

It’s a similar story for the Mill Reef winner on today’s track, Pierre Lapin, who has disappointed since.
