GREEN DOOR OPEN FOR CUP DASH

Don’t back the favourite. But don’t stray far from it. That’s what the stats say about the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot today. Not many favourites win but 41 winners of 57 races started at 6-1 or shorter. That’s 71%.

1.05 Ascot (Shergar Cup Dash) You need your BETDAQ value.. Shergar Cup prices which allow for unfamiliar jockeys from abroad who don’t know the track in this game of musical saddles.

I shall concentrate on the trainers who farm the meeting, where most horses are just social runners. For instance, Robert Cowell has won this Dash three times in seven seasons and is obviously trying hard again, two-handed with Sir Robert Cheval) and Green Door (9.6), who ran a cracker on the last day and likes it soft. Umberto Rispoli scores.

1.40 Ascot (Shergar Cup Stayers) Ian Williams, who won this back to back (2011-12), has – like Cowell – given himself two chances at the pot, Byron Flyer and Wolfcatcher.. And Wolfcatcher (17.0) looks a decent outsider at the trip and on the ground for Hayley Turner

2.15 Ascot (Shergar Cup Challenge) Favourites and older horses (more than five years old) don’t get much of a look-in here. Just one win each in the decade. Gawdawpalin (5.5 offers) is a CD winner at Ascot a grade higher. Jamie Spencer.

2.50 Ascot (Shergar Cup Mile) Same story as the previous race. Only one winning favourite and only one horse over the age of five in the decade. I like the form of Brigliadoro (7.0), now he’s back to a mile. Anthony Delpech.

3.25 Ascot (Shergar Cup Classic) Trainer in form Mark Johnston has scored twice in this since 2010 but Bear Valley’s good run at Royal Ascot was on lightning fast ground.

What sets this race apart is that none of the runners has scored at Ascot and only one (Kasperenko) has won over the distance. But Contango (3.8) has looked like a big winner waiting to happen. Kerrin McEvoy.

4.00 Ascot (Shergar Cup Sprint) This is a the race that only tip-top riders win: Stevens, Peslier, Hughes, Mosse, Jarnet.. to name but a few as they say.

But we may soon have heard more about Anthony Delpech if he can complete a double via Lualiwa (5.0 offers), not well drawn but usually smartly away, stays 7f and acts with cut. That should help.

ALL SET FOR A LA-LA LANDING..

2.30 Haydock (Rose of Lancaster Stakes) Three-year-olds, on a hat-trick here, should confirm their generation’s authority over five older horses from age groups 6 plus, which have not had a single winner of this race, since it was established in 1986. Not a one.

Firm-ground horse Spark Plug and long-absent stamina animal Francis Of Assisi both look lays, even lays for a place. Autocratic is another whose success story is on the firm. Arthenus’s rating has moved only about 5lb in 15 months. Ditto Restorer.

We may have been watching a Group horse in handicaps at Haydock and Ascot in the guise of Laraaib (4.3 BETDAQ), who doesn’t have to improve much to take this weak Group 3.

3.35 Haydock (Dick Hern Stakes) Known affectionately to the punting fraternity as The Galloping Major, Hern won more money for me than any other trainer, thanks to my 40-1 about his Derby winner, Troy.

Heaven knows, it might easily have been 80-1 had the BETDAQ exchange been around, so little form had he before winning his Goodwood trial late on.

Three-year-olds have taken the last five runnings of this. Of the five Classic-generation animals this year, I’d have to discard Dancing Breeze and Mitigate as having won only their maidens, always a bad sign.

Mittens has been running every two weeks, climbing to Listed level to get herself some black type , rising 20b in the ratings. Maybe we can put a line through her first Listed attempt on the last day, racing too far wide at Ascot.

But, if she was looking for better ground (it was her second defeat with cut in the ground), then she may have problems again today.

Queen Of Time (BETDAQ 10.0), fourth in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, has been kept to a sound surface until today but her sire and dam’s sire both got soft-ground winners.

Sea Of Grace is the obvious one, as Nell Gwyn fifth progressing to runner-up in the French 1,000 Guineas on the soft, unsuited by firm and a slow pace in the Falmouth. I’ll try a banker and an outsider a txrick which landed me a 50-1 forecast a couple of days ago.

FORM LINK POINTS TO MAMBA

3.40 Newmarket (Sweet Solera Stakes) Seven favourites have won this Group 3 in nine years, but your first ‘bet’ is what will be favourite? Currently it’s wide open at the front of the market, which suggests you should play the race (use a combination of horses and different bets to win and lay).

Poetic Charm, firm-ground bred, beat only a class-4 winner, Juliet Capulet, by a length on his sole start. Dance Diva likes the ground but was ‘standing still’, five lengths off Nyaleti in a Group 3, whereas Mamba Noire was just half a length behind Nyaleti in a Group 2 and might be worth a bit of win and place, hoping she acts on the ground. But, as I say, play the race, after an early position (8.2 BETDAQ) on the selection.
