CLOUDY IS FINE FOR THE NATIONAL

⭕ 3.10 Chepstow (Coral Welsh Grand National) Christmas comes but twice a year. The Coral National, postponed from Boxing Day, will be run again on December 26 this year. And today’s January version of the 2020 race may go to Christmas In April.

Confused? Not if you check out the results of the race on the four occasions in the decade it has been run on officially heavy ground, with the one-two very repetitive, a battle of the lightweights each time.

Results by weight in those four years: 10-1 beat 10-6; then 10-0 beat 10-0; before 10-6 beat 10-7 and most recently 10-4 beat 10-1.

That makes it a race between Christmas In April, Prime Venture, Secret Reprieve, Bobo Mac, Joe Farrell, Calypso Collonges and Captain Drake.

I had The Hollow Ginge and Springfield Fox on top in my ABC form guide on Wednesday from Christmas In April. And I’d have to add Cloudy Glen to any weighted below 11st. So it’s still a hard race.

Some 13 winners out of 17 were placed the last day; 11 of the last 13 winners had raced in the last 35 days; eight of the last 10 were trained within 60 miles of the course.

That gives you (sub 11st): Bobo Mac, Prime Venture, Secret Reprieve, Springfield Fox.

The delay in running today’s race has been lucky for Venetia Williams. Cloudy Glen had a slight setback which would have pulled him out of it on Boxing Day.

But he’s fine now and has everything in his favour to land yet another local win in the race. Springfield Fox is also trained within the National winners’ catchment area.

FORM GUIDE: Wednesday in the Daqman Archive: 1 The Hollow Ginge, 2 Springfield Fox, 3 Christmas In April.

VALUE BETS: 30.0 The Hollow Ginge and 23.0 Cloudy Glen. Saver: Springfield Fox. All on the BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE

STAR LOOKING SET TO SHINE AGAIN

⭕ 1.45 Kempton Two who aimed too high can fight this out: Coo Star Sivola was said to be back to his best before unseating in the Becher Chase, after a run back at Bangor.

Down almost a stone on his mark after winning the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival, and value here for Nick Williams and Richard Johnson at 8.1 on BETDAQ this morning.

Two For Gold, a sequence winner as a novice, pulled up in the fierce competition of the Ladbrokes Trophy over further at Newbury. Sound chance on this park track against lesser opposition over shorter.

⭕ 2.05 Wincanton At last a FORTUNE COOKIE. Two, in fact, with Protektorat and McFabulous running within 15 minutes.

Some 17lb clear in the ratings, Protektorat should take this on the way to a choice of Cheltenham festival engagements.

⭕ 2.20 Kempton (Relkeel Hurdle) McFabulous completed his hat-trick either side of the lockdown, after winning a Grade-3 novices over today’s CD which meant that the Relkeel was the obvious target longer term.

Now here he is after trying 3m in November in the Ladbrokes Long-Distance Hurdle at Newbury won by Thyme Hill in a duel with Paisley Park. That’s still very good form.

Last year’s Relkeel winner when it was run at Cheltenham, Summerville Boy, then ran second to Paisley Park in the Cleeve, but has to give weight to the improver, McFabulous, today.

MOUSE HAS MORE THAN A SQUEAK..

⭕ 3.30 Kempton (Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle) Only one outright favourite has won in the decade but there’s been just one of double-figure odds. So a fancied horse aged six to eight.

One True King has steadily progressed over 2m, with returns of 31221, but is bred to do even better over today’s 2m 5f.

Everglow beat nothing well in a small field at Ascot and this is his first handicap. The first-time tongue-tie could give him breathing room.

Nicky Henderson’s Glynn has had two wind ops, after being beaten favourite at Doncaster in December. Watch the market late on.

Ascot winner around today’s trip, Shang Tang is a strong traveller but is inexperienced after missing out on his handicap debut, failing to jump the first at Wincanton.

Harry Fry’s grey mare Misty Whisky was on the upgrade in the autumn after wind surgery, and can continue to improve in the manner of her half-sister Air Horse One.

Another mare, The White Mouse – not a grey – also improved (a stone) in two runs in the autumn on two of the trickiest but quite different tracks, Cheltenham and Wincanton.

I took 16.0 each on BETDAQ about the two mares, with One True King the saver.

AGE GOING ON THE SIDE OF GLAJOU

⭕ 3.45 Wincanton Glajou, locally trained, has run well in both his chases, and looks worth upgrading from his 131 rating. At least half the age of his nearest market rivals, last year’s winner Molineaux and Gardefort.

ColIn Tizzard (Molineaux) seems to have entered another slump, which put me off Christmas In April in the Coral National.

He’s raced only one horse this year and his last 10 runners have all failed to reach the frame, with his form here at Wincanton on Boxing Day: 220000, including a beaten favourite.

The 12-year-old Gardefort’s last win was here over the CD in February 2017 on his way to second in the Grand Annual. He ran well on the last day but the ground is good to soft and he hasn’t won in such conditions since 2014.
