ROB HORNBY STAR TO SHINE AGAIN

⭕ 3.50 Newmarket (Bunbury Cup, 7f handicap): With Frankie Dettori on his flight to Belmont, Kieran O’Neill gets a sit on Samburu off only 8st 5lb. Snag is no three-year-old has won since 1998 and only three since 1975.

Another stat says that 17 of the last 19 winners carried 9st or more and that winners by stall in eight years of the decade have been 12, 20, 10, 14, 19, 16, 14, 14.

Spread across the track are three who ran well in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Ascot; Ropey Guest (second) in gate 17, Rhoscolyn (third) in 12 and Montassib (not clear run, fifth) in 6. Their ratings are unchanged.

Behind them were Star Of Orion and the Victoria Cup winner, Vafortino, both hampered during the race.

Star Of Orion (gate 20 today), a winner at the July Meeting a year ago and then second in the Ascot International, has Rob Hornby up for Ralph Beckett, the jockey-trainer team which outran Inspiral with Prosperous Voyage yesterday.

Despite his appalling treatment by the Sandown stewards after Vadeni won the Eclipse – stood down for celebrating after the line – Christophe Soumillon is back. He’s on Wokingham third Jumby here and Perfect Power in the July Cup.

DAQMAN’S VERDICT: Vafortino (gate 18) had Ropey Guest and Star Of Orion (likes today’s course) behind when easily winning the Victoria Cup. Montassib was unlucky at Ascot.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 5.9 Montassib, 11.5 Star Of Orion, 17 Vafortino.

STOUTE PLAYER IS UP FOR THE CUP

⭕ 4.05 York (John Smith’s Cup, 1m 2.5f handicap): FORTUNE COOKIES tend to lose their flavour from this time of year; exposed, prices too short.

In managing the list, we have consistently kept in Just Fine, named before the stable’s Derby win as Sir Michael Stoute’s ‘one’ for this John Smith’s Cup.

Stoutie won it with 2017 Hunt Cup fourth Ballet Concerto and I expected to see Just Fine in that line-up. But he’s clearly a different animal, and finished eighth (not clear run) in the Duke Of Edinburgh, finishing joint-favourite about three lengths behind Brilliant Light (fourth), who was also a bit short of room.

William Haggas and Andrew Balding have won this race three times. The Haggas hope, Mahrajaan, has also been quiet, waiting for this with just the one run this season to date; he travels well.

The Balding runner, Achelois, regarded as a black-type filly, was just pipped in the City And Suburban at Epsom, when she didn’t give away her lead until the last few yards. Interesting to see how Harry Davies rides her, reducing her mark by 5lb.

BETDAQ value FORTUNE COOKIE 14.0 Just Fine; outsider 22.0 Achelois; saver 6.6 Mahrajan.

22.0 BALLYDOYLE POWER THREAT

⭕ 4.25 Newmarket (July Cup, 6f Group 1): How much did Ascot take out of Perfect Power? That must be the worry after Inspiral failed to give her running here yesterday three weeks after beating Prosperous Voyage for the third time with an impressive Coronation Stakes win.

The good news yesterday came from York where Perfect Power was given the perfect boost for today when my nap, Flotus, surged clear in a Group 3.

Flotus had raced down the centre in the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot, finishing third, left for dead by Perfect Power at the business end of the race.

Flaming Rib (second) and Cadamosto (fourth) take Perfect Power on again today.

First, third and seventh from the fast-run Platinum Jubilee are all here again, too: Naval Crown, Creative Force, Artorius and Happy Romance.

From the Jubilee, the handicapper raised Naval Crown to level-peggings with Creative Force (118 each) with Artorius on 116.

From the Commonwealth Cup – run slower than average – Perfect Power and Flaming Rib were each raised 2lb and Cadamosto 9lb.

Today’s future ratings are, therefore, Perfect Power 123, Artorius 122, Flaming Rib 119, Creative Force 118 (only fifth in this last year), Naval Crown 118, allowing the three-year-olds 6lb.

Of the Irish youngsters, Twilight Jet has to bounce back after last of 20 in the Commonwealth Cup but the official-ratings computer has Aidan O’Brien’s Cadamosto as the improver (116).

Cadamosto was favourite, beaten only threeparts of a length by Perfect Power in the Norfolk Stakes last summer, and blinkers helped him get within a couple of lengths in the Commonwealth Cup, just a half behind Flotus.

Seamie Heffernan needs to squeeze another couple of pounds out of him and he’s in at the business end against pace-ace Soumillon and Perfect Power.

BETDAQ value FORTUNE COOKIE 3.2 Perfect Power, outsider 22 Cadamosto.

ANOTHER POWER CHARGE AT YORK

⭕ 4.40 York (City of Walls Stakes, 5f Listed): Tim Easterby is two from three in this since 2019, both heavily–backed favourite, one of them returning today with everything in his favour.

His filly, Winter Power, had York form last year of 111 and she is an unpenalised Group-1 winner ready to come right today, after her stables long spell in the doldrums this season.

The market threat, Royal Aclaim, needs to improve a stone, even with the three-year-old allowance, and City Walk has been a big drifter overnight.

BETDAQ value 3.75 Winter Power

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
