DAQMAN’S SATURDAY NAP IS ANOTHER MONEY SPINNER! Sam Spinner (WON 6-5) was a 38-lengths winner at Doncaster yesterday, landing Daqman’s Saturday nap and taking the profit on his daily best bets to 57 points. ALFA SHOULD BE IN THE MIX
12.30 Navan (Tara Hurdle) Gordon Elliott, who has won the race twice in the last three seasons, is four-handed today in this Grade-B handicap hurdle, two for Gigginstown, Cracking Smart and the ‘veteran’ Mengli Khan.
You didn’t even bat an eyelid when I said ‘veteran’ about Mengli Khan. Third at the Cheltenham Festival in both the Supreme Novices and the JLT, he seems to have been around forever, but is still only six.
That he’s been third or fourth in nine of his last 12 races speaks volumes about his lack of finish though, in fact, Cracking Smart is a year older.
Cracking Smart was Grade-1 placed over hurdles but has been disappointing in his steeplechase career so far.
Soft ground may be against another Elliott hope, Count Simon, who had good form in the Spring and early summer, and stable companion Present In Court has shown no form at all this year, after three wins from four starts in the summer of 2018.
BETDAQ brand ambassador Gavin Cromwell was delighted to see that winner and third in front of Alfa Mix at Punchestown on the last day have both won since.
He makes his handicap debut today at age four. There was money for him last night (10-1 to 7-1 with leading bookmakers) and 6.0 was best on BETDAQ when I checked this morning.
Top Moon, the favourite, is also just four years old. He has quickly progressed, since breaking his maiden over hurdles in the summer.
The step up to 20f on the soft at Cork suited him, and he looks strong for J P McManus and Joseph O’Brien, though has to give 11lb to Alfa Mix, who is the live one in the markets.
KITTY THE CARLISLE NAP
1.45 Southwell The meeting survived man early check but the going is heavy for their jumps card. This novice hurdle looks well above average by course standards and can go to the Nicky Henderson trained Keen On who proved his prowess on heavy ground with a narrow win at Sandown last time out.
Keen On, owned by The Queen, only got up close home at Sandown and should relish the extra half mile of this contest. He should improve for his third start and looks to have more scope than fellow penalised runner Echiquier who is a class dropper having run decent races at Chepstow and Haydock.
Blackfinch receives weight and ran well enough over course and distance when second on his hurdling debut. He should improve for the run but this looks quite a deep event.
3.00 Carlisle Kitty Hall went into my notebook after her debut third at Kelso. She never looked like justifying favouritism that day but the penny only dropped very late on and she should know much more about being a racehorse today.
The softer surface should help, as it will become a more of a test of stamina and she can see off maiden point winner Movin’on Up who looks the danger now that the French bumper winner Fontaine Collonges has been taken out by Venetia Williams.
3.20 Southwell Schiaparannie looks of great interest on his first start for Justin Landy who is 4/18 in hurdles this season and has done well in improving horses from other yards.
The suspicion therefore must be that Schiaparannie is on a lenient handicap mark at present of 109. She’s been off the course for nearly a year (when trained by Ruth Jefferson) and will come into this a fresh horse who has some previous experience of heavy ground.
It doesn’t look the toughest of races with main danger likely to come from Remember The Man who strung together two reasonable fourth placed efforts last month.
