TOP-CLASS FAIRYHOUSE TRIALS: Leicester and Southwell have been abandoned today but Fairyhouse and Carlisle have passed inspection. Daqman puts the spotlight on Fairyhouse, where there are top-class festival trials, but he naps a Carlisle specialist.
CROONER CAN CALL OUT TUNE
⭕ 12.55 Fairyhouse (Porterstown Chase, 3m 5f+) Not much between Velvet Elvis and Minella Crooner, one-two here last Spring but Minella Crooner won on his return to action at Wexford last month. He would give Gordon Elliott a hat-trick in this race.
Half a dozen horses running together in this today were also involved recently, when Sir Bob beat Call The Tune and Glenquin Castle in the Cork Grand National, with The Little Yank 4th, Diol Ker 5th and Everglow 6th.
Call The Tune, who was hampered that day, has the better of the revised weights but is hard to win with (chase form 1-7).
I’m inclined to ride with Minella Crooner, a mystery flop in the NH Chase at Cheltenham but back to form last month. All he does is stay.

⭕ 1.25 Fairyhouse (Royal Bond Novice Hurdle, 2m) This can produce a horse to follow, though 12-wins-in-a-row Envoi Allen (2019) was a bit special!
Envoi Allen was one of a Gordon Elliott treble amid a Willie Mullins five-timer in an eight-year battle for this prie between the two: 2014 and 2021, in which five of the winners started favourite.
Neither has the market leader this time around: that’s between Henry De Bromhead’s big horse An Tobar (missed last season with a setback) and recent Cheltenham winner Encanto Bruno for Gavin Cromwell.
An Tobar, a 3m Point winner, returned earlier last month over today’s CD and was backed as if defeat was out of the question. It was; he went clear of a big field. BETDAQ 2.6 taken.
FOUND! RARE ELLIOTT SOLO
⭕ 2.00 Fairyhouse (Drinmore Novice Chase, 2m 4f) Envoi Allen also won this among six Drinmore strikes for Gordon Elliott in the decade.
Instead of his usual mob-handed attack, he relies entirely on Found A Fifty today, after the six-year-old made all on his chasing debut at Down Royal.
On my ratings, he has the beating of the Gowran and Cork winner Letsbeclearaboutit. I took BETDAQ 3.35.
Of the Willie Mullins’ opposition, this is a short trip for I Am Maximus and he’s returning from a 237-day absence, and Paul Townend rides the 158-rated hurdler, Sharjah.
Sharjah is 2-2 over fences since he switched to chasing in August but it will be another Willie Mullins’ mind–bender if he can get a 10-year-old to win a novice chase of this standing!
COURT A CARLISLE SPECIALIST
⭕ 2.10 Carlisle Barbados Buck’s hasn’t won since his novice days and Paul Nicholls has ‘got shut’ to a small yard only 20 minutes away from Carlisle racecourse.
Palm Beach is another cast-off. Started his career with Aidan O’Brien when owned by The Lads; passed on to J P McManus and has ended up a £10,500 buy for the Dixons in Cumbria.
That was after John Dixon rode him to win a three-horse novice hurdle here at Carlisle in March of last year.
I think it’s an opportunity for old dog Court Dreaming to teach the young ones new tricks, like how to win on the Carlisle track. Court Dreaming’s form on the course is 1212144. And Nicky Richards yard is booming.
It’s many years since I thought about putting one of his in my Fortune Cookies but I’m tempted by the form of Famous Bridge, who scored for Richards at Haydock nine days ago and looks the type for one of the Nationals.
Richards entire season so far is solid with a 23% strike rate but has hit 66% in the last 12 days with form figures of 110112, still standing.
