LOOK OUT AT GLORIOUS GOODWOOD: Lezoo (WON 6-5) kept Daqman’s winning sequence going yesterday (he’s landed 31 winners in 23 days) and added to his lead over Pricewise, which is now 39-24, looking guaranteed to top 40 at Goodwood next week.

BIG-RACE PREVIEWS FOR THE WEEK: Daqman’s Goodwood and Galway previews and Fortune Cookies updates start tomorrow, with both big meetings scheduled all week from Tuesday, which is Goodwood Cup day.

STARS PULVERISED BY PYLEDRIVER

Classics car-crash! The top three-year-old colt (Westover) and filly (Emily Upjohn) were slammed by a 1-2-3 of five-year-olds in the King George yesterday.

Irish Derby hero Westover was 18-lengths fifth of six with Emily Upjohn a total of 25 lengths last in a fast time on firm ground, with overkeen Westover bullied into too strong a pace by constant pressure from the old man of the party, the six-year-old Broome.

Emily Upjohn, pulling hard, was never able to relax and produce her stunning Oaks run, and it was left to the 2021 Arc winner Torquator Tasso to chase home an unlikely winner in the 18-1 outsider, Pyledriver.

Pyledriver has strength and stamina, and a determination on the day matched by his ex-jumps jockey P J McDonald, and there were no excuses beyond Mishriff’s slow start (lost many lengths).

McDonald was supersub for the injured Martin Dwyer, who talked him through the race in advance, after trainer William Muir had seen Pyledriver in his homework ‘looking a picture’ and showing him at the right time ‘a very, very good horse.’

Torquator Tasso, who prefers cut in the ground, is now likely favourite for an Arc double, with the only middle-distance three-year-olds left with a reputation, Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown (on the sidelines) and Eclipse star, Vadeni (best at 1m 2f).

▪️ At Newmarket, Charlie Appleby, who trained this season’s winners of the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, saddled the impressive 750,000-guineas buy Highbank, a Kingman colt, to win ‘like a Ferrari.’

Jockey Jack Mitchell said of the 20-1 shot for next year’s Guineas: ‘He was away and gone, as soon as I asked him to change gear.’

ONE MORE TIME

⭕ 1.00 Chelmsford Silvestre De Sousa makes the short hop to Chelmsford for the one ride on Sunday – One More Olly for Richard Hughes in the opener.

She made a winning debut here over course and distance before being outclassed when pushed into the deep end in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.

This looks much more her level and it would come has a huge surprise to me if she can’t account for Fragrance. Both have been rated 76 but on just her third start surely One More Olly has the most potential to improve?

IN THE PIPELINE

⭕ 1.20 Uttoxeter An interesting juvenile hurdle which could see the Alan King trained Fast Forward sent off favourite.

He was a beaten favourite on debut over hurdles (lost shoe) and was no world beater on the flat.

Preference is for the David Pipe trained Free Chakarte who might be a bit more streetwise.

Her form looks solid enough and she could be even better with some give in the ground.

It’s good to soft at Uttoxeter – how? I’m not quite sure.

This was a local story just a few days ago …

A main shopping route through Uttoxeter was forced to close after the record-breaking high temperatures caused the road to bulge lift.

DON’T FAIL TO MISS ALFLAILA

⭕ 4.05 Pontefract Pomfret Stakes A good renewal of this Listed contest with six runners now that last year’s winner Brunch is off the menu and a non runner.

It looks a tougher renewal in any event and another previous winner Marie’s Diamond (2019) could struggle.

Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore team up with Astro King and for both of them it’s their only runner of the day and indeed their final runner before Glorious Goodwood.

Astro King was an excellent fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot but you just get the feeling he has something to find in Listed company and the official ratings support that.

I’ll take a chance with the sole three-year-old Alflaila from the Owen Burrows yard who have had three runners in the last fortnight and they have finished 211.

Alflaila gets the age allowance and is already proven in this grade with an excellent second at Newmarket last time out. Prior to that, he was 10th in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot but far from disgraced beaten a shade over six lengths.

Modern News is probably the one to beat. He won a weak Listed race at Windsor but beaten in two runs since and his Listed race penalty might just make the difference here in terms of vulnerability.

⭕ 4.40 Pontefract No play for me here. Wilkins looks the obvious one for William Haggas but do you really want to be playing at odds-on on Betdaq Betting Exchange on a horse that has yet to run on fast ground?

His three runs to date have been on good to soft (twice) and soft. That’s not to say he won’t handle the ground – but you are playing at very short odds to find out.
