CLASSIC CASE FOR SAVING TOP CHASE: Racing should now beat the weather with warmer spells forecast but controversy and bitter disappointment at the loss of Saturday’s Warwick Classic could prompt an inquiry at a time when English jumps racing can’t afford to lose its top races.
MULLINS FOR GOLD IN TRIALS
⭕ 12.50 Punchestown With two runners each -out of five! – for Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, this novice chase could produce another Bob Olinger or Envoi Allen, two of the previous winners.
Jacobs Ladder (Elliott) had Pure Steel beaten off at Naas but Predator’s Gold (Mullins), a Grade-1 hurdler, led and led again at Navan, seemingly toying with his field in a fast time.
⭕ 2.20 Punchestown Winner of the Queen Alexandra stamina test at Royal Ascot, Sober (Mullins) takes in this Moscow Flyer novices’ hurdle on the way to a Grade 1 at Leopardstown in three weeks’ time.
MESSAGE IS CORRESPONDENCE
⭕ 1.42 Chelmsford Tony Carroll has scored 11 winners in eight days at the races since the turn of the year.
I shall bet that he will attempt three wins in five days with Gogo Yubari in the opener at Chelmsford today (1.42).
Gogo Yubari’s Lingfield double for 7lb-claimer Harry Vigors was completed with the minimum fuss yesterday and Harry rides for Carroll again if Gogo goes!
But three of the 11 Carroll winners were partnered by Gina Mangan who has a full book of six Chelmsford rides, all bar one for Carroll.
⭕ 2.12 Chelmsford I’ve got my eye on Correspondence, who has just joined Carroll from Harry Eustace at a bargain price, when you consider he was a $235,000 yearling at Keeneland Sales. The change of stable could bring out the best in him. Betdaq Betting Exchange 28.0 this morning.
⭕ 3.42 Chelmsford Stuart Williams is another trainer in form. He’s had five winners in his last five days’ racing, two of them on this track.
Mangan rides his North View, another with a debut day today after switching stables from George Boughey.
KAJIKIA FRESH FOR FONTWELL
⭕ 4.00 Fontwell Paul Nicholls, 14 times champion jumps trainer, is a rose-grower, like Henry Cecil, and he thought he had one poised to bloom at Cheltenham and put him back in the ring against Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton.
But Kalif Du Berlais was fatally injured behind old-warrior Edwardstone at Kempton yesterday.
And whether or not Kajikia goes well for the yard today, there will be plenty of fans down in Sussex – he’s trained nearly 200 winners at Fontwell – who will wish him an early change of fortune.
Kajikia is 2-2 when fresh and is on a good mark for a first handicap, claimed off in a race which features several Fontwell favourites, including Activist, Bridge and Motazzen. Too big at BETDAQ 18.0.
