DINO LOOKS DIFFERENT CLASS
⭕ 3.17 Chepstow (Welsh Champion Hurdle) Last run at Chepstow in 2002, this race moves back home from Ffos Las to celebrations by a Welsh choir (scintillante!)
Sam Thomas trained the one-two at Ffos Las in 2024 and has the favourite today, Celtic Dino, who completed a hat-trick last autumn.
He climbed to class-2 level at Ascot for his treble, ridden by today’s jockey, Dylan Johnston, who claims 3lb.
Best form since was third at the Liverpool Grand National meeting, for which he was favourite and should have won but for being badly hampered. Winner when fresh.
Tutti Quanti (goes chasing) and 11.5 morning offer Listentoyourheart (returns to his winning trip, dropped in class) have each won two novice hurdles.
Wilful also wins first time but his second in a Listed at Punchestown now has him on his highest mark and trainer Jonjo O’Neill is currently 1-11.
Harry Derham says that Balhambar has been trained for the race but his Lambourn stable last had a winner eight weeks ago and has been missing strike, with five of his last 10 runners placed without winning (two beaten favourites).
LAY DOWN YOUR ARMES: 19.0
⭕ 3.52 Chepstow Does Dan Skelton have the ammunition to fend off Willie Mullins for the 2025-6 Jumps-trainers’ title?
He certainly seemed to have plenty going for him in this race, with five of the eight declared in a £20k-to-the-winner handicap.
But all bar Frere d’Armes were an Unexpected Party of withdrawals around 10 o’clock!
It’s a class-2 chase Paul Nicholls has won three times in the last nine years from down the handicap.
But his Il Ridoto is giving weight to all bar Jane Williams’ Saint Segal, the pair of them absent for more than 170 days.
Il Ridoto, third in this 12 months ago, won in the November last year and in 2022-3 but each time had one or more outings beforehand, so today seems to be a pipe-opener.
Saint Segal was also ridden patiently on his reappearance in this race a year ago.
Sophie Leech could squeeze some more out of Mount Tempest, though that one has won all his races with cut in the ground.
So I bagged the impossible, 19.0 Frere d’Armes on Betdaq Betting Exchange in a four-horse line-up, thinking he might get away from them.
GET BACK IN THE BLACK..
⭕ 4.47 Goodwood Cerulean Bay (stall 8 today) who beat Alpha Crucis here by a length or so last month (Epictetus third) is another conceded a big chance by non-runners this morning.
David O’Meara has Oisin Murphy on Cerulean Bay and – needing a shower or two of rain – Sean Levey on the well-drawn Theoryofeverything.
The grey Back In Black, raced only three times this year, has always looked like a miler, and taking the step up on a track like Goodwood is an obvious smart move.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
