GOOD LORD! SATURDAY BIG-RACE DOUBLE FOR DAQMAN: Daqman landed the Saturday big races back to back at Newmarket yesterday with Earthlight (WON 11-4, one bet) in the much-heralded Middle Park two-year-olds’ showdown and Lord North (WON 9-2, three bets) in the Cambridgeshire, with 7.6 taken in the BETDAQ orange.
LORD NORTH (WON 9-2 from 7.6 on BETDAQ, Cambridgeshire)
EARTHLIGHT (WON 11-4, Middle Park Stakes)
1, 2, 3, 4 WERE 3, 5, 2, 6 IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE ORDER-IN: Daqman’s Cambridgeshire order-in produced the first four from a final list of six to finish:
Good Birthday (3rd 9-1) tipped to be second
Lord North (Won 9-2) tipped to be third
Beringer (2nd 16-1) tipped to be fifth
Mordin (4th 12-1) tipped to be sixth
NOW DAQMAN BIDS TO BEAT PRICEWISE BY 1,000 POINTS: Earthlight and Lord North sent Daqman a proud FORTY wins head of Pricewise of the Racing Post as the 2019 Flat season reaches its climax next month with the Arc and the British championship meeting. He is 938 points in front of his archrival to 10-point level stakes. Says Daqman: ‘I want to win by 1,000.’
Daqman 73, Pricewise 33 (Daqman + 473, Pricewise – 465 to 10pt stakes)
Bulls-eye naps (7-15) 46% (252pts profit to recommended stakes)
Supernaps (22-36) 61% (82pts profit to 20-point stakes)
NOT JUST A WALK IN THE PARK..
The Middle Park was just middling. It was built up to be the race of the year but at least three horses didn’t run their races, which weakens the result. The stars that fell were:
Siskin played up in the stalls; withdrawn. Now has to face stalls testing.
Monarch of Egypt had closed down Siskin at the Curragh on the last day but, edged left after two out when ridden, finished stone last.
Mums Tipple ran no sort of race; said to have been found lame afterwards.
The race also left question marks: how good is the form when a 100-1 shot (Summer Sands) is placed, within two lengths of the winner?
Summer Sands was six lengths behind Threat at York but more than a length in front of the same horse this time. Did Threat not run his race or did Summer Sands improve? My guess is a bit of both.
But strange that two Hannon horses, Threat and Mums Tipple, failed to perform. The stable had just had 20 consecutive losers but hard to judge on that; it has so many runners.
At the same time, I have to say it is amazing how the ’experts’ ignore the evidence of poor trainer strike-rates.
I went right off Le Don De Vie in my column yesterday because of Hughie Morrison’s sequence of poor returns but that didn’t stop ITV Racing tipping both the Don (17th) and stablemate Korcho (20th), despite a notable lack of enthusiasm by the trainer in his interview. Both well drawn; both flopped.
The two who kept the Middle Park honest to the form yesterday were Earthlight and Golden Horde. That they were one-two on good ground after being one-three on heavy in the Morny suggests they are consistently dominant.
Earthlight is more the terrier than the lion, with a low, quick sprinter’s action but he travelled well and any doubts that his style would not be effective in the wide open spaces of the Rowley Mile were dispelled, at least at the 6f trip they were.
With 5-5 so far, he is clearly next best to Pinatubo, whose form also took a knock in that Lope Y Fernandez, his Chesham runner-up was only sixth in the Middle Park. The course record? Ignore that; a tail wind blew the time up out of all proportion.
In the Cheveley Park, Millisle leapt forward but note Etoile on her first run since May. She’s the good news for Ballydoyle juveniles; don’t they need it, having to go home and read about Godolphin’s dominance with Pinatubo and Earthlight, and the surge of their sire, Shamardal!
LOCKET OPEN TO IMPROVEMENT
2.50 The Curragh (Weld Park Stakes) Aidan O’Brien thinks that just one filly is needed to follow up last year’s success in this Group-3 juvenile by his dual 1,000 Guineas winner, Hermosa.
He is relying on 5.9 BETDAQ offer Love Locket to reverse Naas form with Deidra. Love Locket is a No Nay Never, who traces back on the dam’s side to Sea The Stars and High Chaparral.
Dermot Weld runs two, but O’Brien has already taken care of Tasalka (with Blissful)‚ and Shehreen was behind Deidra at Cork. Know It All was well beaten when raised into the Pattern.
INNISFREE CAN FOLLOW CAPRI
4.00 The Curragh (Beresford Stakes) Aidan O’Brien has won this 18 times, most recently with Capri and Japan among eight winners in a row.
Such is the stamina in his pedigree that I expect Innisfree to confirm Ballybrit form with Shekhem over the extra furlong of this Group 2. I will arise and go now to the BETDAQ orange..
5.15 Epsom Chris Wall is firing at 38% and Zeyzoun could return to form here but Global Destination (13.0 the win) is 2-2 on soft ground, and hopefully we’ll keep the eight runners, so I have three chances of a place.
