330 POINTS FROM 14-1 BIG-RACE WIN: ‘I want to pot a 100-point winner,’ said Daqman on Tuesday in his Cheltenham preview this week. But, with a 50-point Bull’s-Eye Bet and 20-points level stakes on the same horse as a Fortune Cookie, he won 330 points from Frodon (WON 14-1) in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup yesterday.
NOW HE’S 6-2 AHEAD OF PRICEWISE: Offers about Frodon were exchanged at 120.0 in running. His win took Daqman further ahead of his arch-rival for value, Pricewise of the Racing Post. But Daqman hadn’t finished. He went on to stuff Pricewise yet again with Briery Queen to go 6-2 clear (profit-and-loss details on Monday). The two big winners were:
WON 14-1 Frodon
WON 8-1 Briery Queen
TWO BANKER BETS AT CORK: There’s a clash today between Daqman and Pricewise in the Punchestown Chase, in which both oppose the favourite. There are two bankers at Cork.
HERCULES CAN WIN A SPEED RACE
2.00 Punchestown (John Durkan Punchestown Chase) Ruby Walsh deserts Douvan at Cork in 15 minutes time to ride Djakadam for a repeat in this one.
This is Grade 1, worth 50,000euros to the winner; Cork is Grade 2 worth under 30,000 but apart from winning this in a bog last year, Djakadam has been belittled in Grade 1, a nearly horse beaten consecutively by Coneygree, Don Cossack and Cue Card; even Carlingford Lough.
Second in two Gold Cups could be his epitaph unless he can find that bit more at the business end and, without the very soft ground he loves, it’s hard to bet on him catching Black Hercules over this shorter trip in a much better race than last year.
Black Hercules has terrific cruising speed and an awful lot of pace, makes ground at his fences and has won first time of asking or after an absence three times out of four.
Outlander has failed to emerge from novice company with a win: at the weights, there’s nothing between him and Sub Lieutenant on their Belfast Chase one-two (Grade 2) last month but the Lieutenant won comfortably.
Aleichi Inois is a slower jumper and would have been beaten by Outlander had that one stood up in the Clonmel Oil Chase.
Black Hercules is the potential improver here, having run only 11 Rules races (four chases) in his life, against Aleichi Inois (24 starts, 16 chases), Sub Lieutenant (23-10), Djakadam (18-12) and Outlander (18-8).
On today’s ground, Black Hercules and Sub Lieutenant could have the legs of Djakadam, with 5.0 on BETDAQ is an honest offer about my selection in a five-horse race. Djakadam looked vulnerable on 2.34.
Sub Lieutenant’s 3.85 included some speculation, as he’s never won a Grade 1 over hurdles or fences.
NOTORIOUS NAPPED FOR ELLIOTT
1.35 Carlisle I rarely back horses in lower-level races that have just had a win but West of The Edge makes a solo 450-mile round trip for this with in-form Sam Twiston-Davies booked for his only ride of the day.
1.40 Cork This race has recently produced Road To Riches (Noel Meade) and Black Hercules (Willie Mullins) and the same stables are back with Rathnure Rebel and Screaming Rose.
Monbeg Notorious represents Gordon Elliottt who fired in a six-timer at Navan two Sundays back. So this race is a real cracker among the top yards for this meeting.
Points winner Rathnure Rebel showed his recovery from ‘a few problems’ with a hurdles success first run back this season at Clonmel last month for owners Gigginstown..
But Monbeg Notorious wears the Gigginstown red cap and this Milan gelding (out of a Presenting mare) looks good for the three miles after breaking his maiden over 2m 6f.
Screaming Rose, another deserted here by Ruby Walsh, stayed on well when upped to 3m at Cork on the last day but she has generally become a bit of a bridesmaid.
2.15 Cork (Hilly Way Chase) After 11 wins in a row, Douvan should have no problem extending Willie Mullins’ hold on this prize to nine out of 10, with his current form figures for the race: 111113111.
He will be no sort of price and the defeats of Mullins’s Vroum Vroum Mag in the Hattons Grace last Sunday, and then of O O Seven at Doncaster yesterday, have jolted short-odds banker addicts, and they will be wary here, with Ruby Walsh riding at Punchestown.
The Game Charger has finished a total of 38 lengths behind Douvan in three attempts, and Grand National fourth Gilgamboa (11.0 in the BETDAQ orange) looks the place bet.
He failed by only a short-head to hold on over 2m in the Fortria Chase at Navan on his return, with The Game Changer fourth. Despite having Aintree pretentions again, Gilgamboa’s chase form at 20f or less is 1132132
2.45 Cork Vroum Vroum Mag won this race last time it was run and his trainer, that man Mullins again, has another sequence horse here in Listen Dear, unbeaten in five races since August 2015 and 2-2 over fences.
