WILL BALLYDOYLE BROOME CONTINUE TRIALS CLEAN SWEEP? Two more classic trials at Leopardstown today, featuring another Ballydoyle prince, Broome, plus the French 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas in mud at Longchamp, starring Persian King. Daqman v Pricewise: 2.55 and 3.30 Longchamp. Aidan O’Brien has won two Classics and four Derby trials so far.
FRANKIE JET PROPELLED TO PARIS
1.35 Longchamp (Prix de Saint Georges) Not the greatest bunch of sprinters, and the ground will be heavy, so maybe Adrian Keatley is right to send The Broghie Man over from Ireland.
He won a Listed at Navan on the soft first time out a year or so ago and the one-time Commonwealth Cup hope is probably better than the bare form. Gerald Mosse booked before his French 2,000 Guineas ride for Joseph O’Brien.
The likely favourite, Gold Vibe, looks a nearly horse, after eight seconds, though places in Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 (three times) all read better than the form of Forza Capitano and Bakoel Koffie – who were one-two at Chantilly in March – both of them holding Sestilio Jet.
But we have to wonder why Frankie Dettori is flying over for the one mount on Sestilio. Is he jet propelled in the mud? Worth a euro to find out at 4.5.
RELY ON BALLYDOYLE FIRE POWER
2.50 Leopardstown (1,000 Guineas Trial) Fancy Feat has scored at Gowran Park since her defeat by Hamariyna at Tipperary, but Aidan O’Brien had a hind view of them both through the third filly, Simply Beautiful, who was a similar distance behind Lady Wannabe at Cork.
Can O’Brien put that to good use? Mona Lisa’s Smile took seven starts to break her maiden and, returning a week ago, was soon behind in the Pretty Polly at Newmarket won by Maqsad.
But Ballydoyle stablemate Fire Fly (Donnacha rides) has already trialled at this track, well behind Newmarket 1,000 runner-up Lady Kaya and the Athasi Stakes winner, Happen (holds Titanium Sky).
The last time Donnacha rode her, Fire Fly beat the Blue Wind winner, Tarnawa, and she will benefit from better ground today. I took 7.0 on BETDAQ.
BROOME CAN HANDLE MODEST TRIAL
3.25 Leopardstown (Derby Trial) Racecourse rumours yesterday pushed a smooth Sir Michael Stoute winner out to 7-1 SP and a well competent Aidan O’Brien colt, Anthony Van Dyke, eased to 2-1 before putting the Lingfield talking horses in the place with victory in the Derby Trial.
Long may the rumours continue but they will need to be as negative as a Brexit debate to get us a price about Broome, who looks the latest in line for a big Derby rating.
The Lagardere runner-up is already on 115 after the perfect start, taking the Ballysax eight lengths. Strictly, through Guineas fourth Madhmoon, who beat him in September, he is not of the highest rank.
But history could well be written another way: that Broome surged forward in the Ballysax (Sovereign beaten eight lengths, Pythion third, Guaranteed stone last), while Madhmoon was being overtaken by Broome’s stablemate, Magna Grecia at Newmarket.
Buckhurst has a lot to prove with Joseph O’Brien so far short of a Classic candidate, and Blenheim Palace has to step up from handicap level.
That leaves Dermot Weld’s Rakan (Sea The Stars out of an Oaks runner-up) as the possible outsider, blessed with bags of stamina on the dam’s side.
SHAMAN COULD BE KING FOR A DAY
2.55 Longchamp (French 2,000 Guineas) Four-time-winner Aidan O’Brien was due to saddle Never No More and son Joseph sends over No Needs Never against French ace Persian King. But it soon became Never-neverland, when Aidan’s hope was No More, withdrawn.
Persian King’s four in a row includes Newmarket last October when he beat Magna Grecia and Circus Maximus, so Ballydoyle have been franking his form all Spring, firstly through the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas hero and then the Dee Stakes winner.
Van Beethoven was a good six lengths off Too Darn Hot in the Champagne Stakes in September so, in theory, Persian King has to have failed to grow up over the winter or come to this below par.
Maybe Anodor can return to the form that saw him easily dismiss Persian King when both started out at Deauville last August. But King quickly took over the French throne after that, and Anodor is drawn out in the bois!
Persian King has the ideal draw and won the recognised trial for this, the Fontainebleau, but is not tried on the very soft ground.
William Haggas’s Senza Limiti, Paul Cole’s Duke Of Hazzard and Roger Varian’s San Donato are sons of a French Guineas winner so just had to travel for this. Grainges has won only his maiden, always a bad sign and his two biggest defeats were on the soft.
Grainges doesn’t say much for Munitions, who beat him on the line in the Prix Djebel. Heavy ground winner Shaman, a 9.4 offer early doors, is on the upgrade and could take advantage if Persian King shows an aversion to heavy going.
FILLY TO WATCH IN GUINEAS MUD
3.30 Longchamp (French 1,000 Guineas) Castle Lady won the traditional trial for this the Prix de la Grotte, when Rocques stayed on late.
Jean-Claude Rouget has landed a Guineas hat-trick (2014-16) and Commes still ‘could be anything,’ though beaten by Suphala, who in turn was run over by 8.4 offer Watch Me in the other principal fillies’ trial, the Imprudence. Watch Me won on heavy as a juvenile.
The surprise packet on form, but no surprise to punters on this side of the Channel, may be Coral Beach, who surprised Aidan O’Brien when winning a Group 3 last backend against the colts and was huge at 17.5 early mouse.
