14-1 WINNER FOR DAQMAN AT ASCOT: Daqman managed to wipe most of the slate clean yesterday with a bet on Jessica Harrington’s Irish raider, Jungle Cove, expertly ridden by Canadian ace Emma-Jayne Wilson in the Shergar Cup team event at Ascot. His nap, Bradsell, stumbled at the start of the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and was always playing catch-up, but nothing could catch the sensational winner.

WON 14-1 JUNGLE COVE

TODAY’S HEADLINES: Big races at Deauville and Dusseldorf; the usual small fields at Leicester and Windsor, but 91 runners spread evenly over seven races at Haydock, where the going remains good. It’s Daqman 40, Pricewise 27 in the value challenge.

BEAR-LY ABLE TO BELIEVE IT!

Only believe what you see yourself. A certain racing character called William Hill famously gave this advice to punters way back.. but sometimes it’s hard to do.

I saw Bradsell stumble and miss the break in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh yesterday. I saw Persian Force range up to the leader, spoken of by Richard Hannon before the race as ‘our best since Canford Cliffs.’

Then I saw the colt in front, who was in command and would have won without asking anything special of him.

But Ryan Moore knew that this was the day when he should be asked. So he pushed him a furlong out, and Little Big Bear absolutely powered clear, not just changing gear but seemingly engaging a reserve booster engine.

I hadn’t seen such acceleration since Enable and, for that reason, I shall immediately add Aidan O’Brien’s son of No Nay Never to my Fortune Cookies, view to a kill in the National Stakes, back at the Curragh in September. I did see it, didn’t I?

YOU SAID IT: Quote of the day at the Ascot funfare called the Shergar Cup, after a Jamie Spencer double put him into the lead in the jockeys’ race, with one event to go.

Describing Spenny’s days of glory as Classic winner seven times and champion jockey of both England and Ireland, Matt Chapman asked him on ITV: ‘Winning the Shergar Cup title would be top of the list, though, wouldn’t it?’

Spencer, aloft in the saddle and pausing for effect, turned and replied in a word: ‘No.’

🏇 HOOFNOTE: Spencer’s winning tally was overtaken by Neil Callan in the last, so he hadn’t won anyway.

CROWN FACES 26.0 CAR CRASH

⭕ 2.55 Deauville (Prix Maurice de Gheest) A Group-1 extended sprint of 6f 110yd, won five years out of the last eight by English raiders.

They include winners trained by Richard Fahey, Charles Hills and Charlie Appleby, who now saddle Perfect Power, Garrus and Naval Crown respectively, rated 117, 110 and 118.

In a strong raiding party, they are joined by Clive Cox (Harry Three 110), Owen Burrows (Minzaal 113), John Quinn (Highfield Princess 112) and David Evans (Rohaan 114).

Perfect Power and Highfield Princess were taken out of the FORTUNE COOKIES for two reasons: Perfect Power because the top September-October sprints in England are likely to be run with cut in the ground; Highfield Princess because she has fallen short of Group 1.

And both were unlikely to cope with the newcomer to 6f, Alcohol Free, who won the July Cup, with Naval Crown runner-up, Artorius third, Perfect Power seventh and King Hermes 11th.

It all suggests the Charlie Appleby four-year-old will wear the Crown today, his prospects boosted by having won at 7f already.

It was the second defeat in Europe for the Aussie, Artorius, after his third to Naval Crown in the Platinum Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

Also capable of getting today’s trip well, as a previous winner over 7f, is Amilcar who, in his last race at Longchamp, beat last year’s Maurice De Gheest winner, Marianafoot, who swerves another encounter today.

Daqman’s 1-2-3 Betdaq Betting Exchange: Naval Crown 4.4, Amilcar 26.0, Artorius 6.4

TOY NAPPED TO LAND AN OAKS

⭕ 3.45 Haydock Kimngrace split two winners over this CD in June, then on the last day ran well over a furlong further at Goodwood, giving weight to the winner, Adaay In Asia, who went in again at Ascot yesterday. BETDAQ 4.3

⭕ 4.00 Dusseldorf (German Oaks) Toy officially improved 7lb when, stepped up in trip by Aidan O’Brien, she ran second in the Irish Oaks. Today’s 1m 3f of the Preis De Diana on good ground, looks tailor-made for her, and Ryan Moore flies over for the ride.

⭕ 4.45 Haydock Russco, winner of five in a row over 6f and 7f between July and September last year, including one here at Haydock, is down in the weights, with Paul Mulrennan booked after landing nine winners in August so far. BETDAQ 15.0.

⭕ 6.45 Haydock Frankenstella, an 8.0 offer, just sneaks into this on the roof-rack as a class-2 winner on the course in a class-4 stayers’ race. Run For Oscar got no sort of run the last day on the Curragh.

Hurdles hat-trick winner Malakahna (BETDAQ 17.0), rated 75 on one Flat run, has huge scope on her NH rating of 125.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
