WHAT A WAY TO GO TO THE DERBY
⭕ 2.15 Epsom (Derby Wild Card Stakes) Struth! Does the winner of this really get into Derby 2023? Last year’s scorer was capable only of eighth in a Group 2; the year before it couldn’t win a handicap afterwards.
The idea followed victory in this, and his subsequent second to Masar in the 2018 Epsom Derby, by Dee Ex Bee.
Dee Ex Bee and the winner of this the following year, Persian Moon, were both trained by Team Johnston and the combined skills of Mark and Charlie could well get the Australia colt Struth home under Jason Hart today.
If so, they will fly in the face of the form. The seven who finished behind Struth when he won his maiden at Nottingham have all failed to score since.
But it’s that sort of day and the alternative in this race is to bet odds on Castle Way, who should be 4-9 not 4-5 this morning, which is even more off-putting.
Win or lose, Godolphin are having a laugh; desperately needing to get a freeloader for the Derby, I don’t think!
BETTING value 5.7 Struth
PARTY IN GOOD COMPANY TONIGHT
⭕ 2.50 Epsom Appropriate to the card is this Stanley Wootton Handicap, named after the Epsom-based master of many a top apprentice.
Local trainer Jim Boyle has landed seven wins with Bad Company, and could well be keeping good company in the Downs Hotel if the five-year-old can back up his Jump Jockeys’ Derby victory at the last meeting.
Gary Moore trained last year’s winner but is currently 0-19 and The Whipmaster is still suffering from the rise in ratings prompted by his four-timer in the Spring.
Palavicino is dropped to class 3 for the first time in 18 starts since his three strikes from four starts in the summer of 2020, and is today spot on back to his last winning mark.
Jewel In My Crown is in form but has never won this high in the handicap. Wilkie, AW winner in France, has his first race in England, since moving from Andre Fabre.
BETDAQ value 5.8 Bad Company
MORE GOLD FOR IN-FORM HILLS
⭕ 3.25 Epsom (Apprentices Derby) It’s a good lad who can make up ground in the straight at Epsom and three of the last five winners of this have made all or been in front for most of the final mile.
The front-runner today is Sword Beach, who seems to have been laid out for this with his Flat reappearance run only this month after a long break.
We just have to hope he hasn’t caught the losing lurgy at his stable, whatever it is: Alan King has trained 19 consecutive losers in the last three weeks.
The market gives him a massive thumbs down at 33.0, which says to me: well, you can only lose a pound.
In contrast, Charlie Hills (Saratoga Gold) was in devastating form yesterday with a hat-trick, including the £600k Goffs Million at The Curragh with a storming run by Shane Foley on Galeron. Saratoga Gold has already won the Amateurs’ Derby here in August.
Gary Moore farms this race. Four winners out of eight in the decade, two at 14-1 and one at 16-1, one of them under Rhys Clutterbuck.
But it will be a desperate result if there’s another Moore-Clutterbuck party, their hope Barn Owl having finished stone last in each of his last four starts, at odds of 11-1, 40-1, 50-1 and 100-1.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.4 Saratoga Gold, 33 Sword Beach
FINAL FLINGS AT 15.0 AND 26.0
⭕ 3.50 Ffos Las (Summer Stayers Final) There’s nothing like success for inspiration and confidence, and claimer Aidan Keeley, who rode Majestic to a shock 25-1 Cambridgeshire win yesterday, partners Stan Moore’s Easy Equation, down an overall two stone in the handicap. Also 25-1 this morning.
Fred Bear will be 60lb below his best hurdles form when he lines up on the Flat with trainer Sheena West currently in good heart with winners under both Rules.
BETDAQ value 15.0 Fred Bear, 26.0 Easy Equation
TWOMEY HAS A CLASSIC CLAIM
⭕ 4.15 The Curragh (Irish Cesarewitch) Paddy Twomey has a 30% strike rate and €1.4m in the kitty this season, thanks in particular to the filly La Petite Coco (Pretty Polly winner here) and the mare Pearls Galore, who turned over Saffron Beach, Tenebrism and Homeless Songs in the Matron over Irish-champions weekend.
Twomey habitually nominates his venues in advance and today’s race has long been in his diary for French Claim, third in the Irish Derby behind Westover.
He also runs Spring hat-trick winner, Earl of Tyrone, third in the Ebor at York. In both cases, they are stepping up to 2m for the first time.
Cleveland, who beat the Doncaster Cup winner, Coltrane, in last year’s Chester Cup, is up for a stamina test today for the first time since.
Echoes In Rain beat a big field at the Galway Festival (2m 1f soft) , with stablemates Maze Runner second and Lot Of Joy fourth on his Irish debut.
BETDAQ value 8.9 Cleveland, 10.5 French Claim, 11.5 Lot Of Joy

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
