After a second 11-1 winner in two days yesterday, he was beaten only half-a-length with 14-1 shot Achelois (2nd 21.0 on BETDAQ).

ENGLISH RAIDER THE DEAUVILLE PICK: here’s a Group race at Fairyhouse today but no Flat racing in England. The main meeting is at Deauville, which an English raider should win.

THE FRANKIE FIZZ IS STILL MISSING

Missing strike. Another way of putting it is that the trainer or jockey ‘missing strike’ was bang there with every chance but could finish only second or third with fancied runners; not once, not twice but more times than you’d care to accept.

The guy who is ‘missing strike’ is your worst enemy: and he is currently Frankie Dettori. Nothing much has changed since his car-crash of a Royal Ascot.

He chose to go to the German Derby and Oaks last weekend: result, second and third on two hot favourites.

After three more places and then a bitter-pill defeat at 7-1 on with Inspiral, he flew over to the Belmont Derby and Oaks yesterday and finished second and second again for Charlie Appleby on With The Moonlight and Derby-favourite Nations Pride. His current score is now 1-12, with form figures: 232410023222.

FORCED TO PLAY BINGO ON HORSES

Remember that phrase ‘studying’ form? I liked to give 20 minutes to half-and-hour to work on each Group race and major handicap. There would be at most two of each on a Saturday.

Yesterday they ran everything everywhere they could think of on the major circuit: Ascot, Chester, Newmarket, York… There were 48 races at seven meetings; six major handicaps, four Group.

Absolutely absurd. Famous races were so crushed together in this bingo with horses that ITV Racing was going back to do interviews with winning connections AFTER the next race at a different venue.

Apart from trying to squeeze in nearly six hours of form study yesterday, just following the markets and watching some of the races on TV covered another four or five hours unrelenting commentary in the afternoon.

Now here we are on the following day, Sunday, and England doesn’t even have ONE Flat-race card. Not a one.

There’s a Group 3 in Ireland but the day is all about Deauville where, in all bar one Group-1 event, the fields are skinny.

⭕ 12.23 Deauville (2yo, 5f): If the race doesn’t come too soon, the drop back to the minimum for George Boughey’s even-money shot Malrescia looks the obvious response to her being caught in the last half-furlong over 6f at Newmarket 15 days ago.

Wootton City has done most of his winning in the French Provinces, and her Listed win the last day was made to look ordinary when the runner-up was a 50-1 no-hoper, ninth, in the Queen Mary.

⭕ 12.58 Deauville (2yo, 7f): Sydneyarms Chelsea (BETDAQ 2.72) was not disgraced, fourth, keeping on behind Meditate in the Albany at Royal Ascot.

The runner-up that day, Mawj, was a strong finisher at Newmarket yesterday, turning over the favourite in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.

HE SHOULD SAIL IN ON ASCOT FORM

⭕ 2.50 Deauville (Prix Jean Prat, 7f Group 1): Richard Hannon has had two Group winners in the last three days (Persian Force and Chindit), though still striking at a poor rate overall of 6-69.

Otherwise, if you could rely on the form being reproduced again today, the Hannon colt Lusail looks a bet in this 7f Group 1.

Tardy start, switched, not clear run, bumped! That describes his run in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas, more than five lengths off the winner, Coroebus, at the line (Light Infantry behind).

But, settling better and given a different ride in the St James’s Palace Stakes (1m) at Royal Ascot, Lusail led two out and was headed only in the final furlong, held by Coroebus again, but this time going down only a head (New Energy 8th).

Meanwhile, the Coroebus camp also wins the French Guineas, when Modern Games fends off Texas and Tribalist (going: good to soft).

Modern Games then tries gamely to tackle 1m 2.5f on soft for the French Derby but is put firmly in third place by the subsequent Eclipse winner, Vadeni.

Of the three fillies in the race today, Mangoustine was beaten only a head in the French 1,000 Guineas (softish ground) but was well beaten by Inspiral at Ascot on firm.

Fourth in that race was Tenebrism, only eighth in the 1,000 Guineas. Ascot was an improvement but she still looked well short of her Cheveley Park winning form, and the drop back to 7f has to make a big difference.

SOUMILLON BIG AT THE BETDAQ 6.0

⭕ 3.25 Deauville (Prix de Ris-Orangis, 6f Group 3): Garrus (Ryan Moore for Charles Hills) has had six Group 1 and 2 races without success in the last year but scored over today’s CD at today’s Group-3 level.

Against him on the stats is that horses aged three and four have won nine out of 10 in the decade, and why shouldn’t they; it’s their time.

Clive Cox tried cheekpieces on Wings Of War when second in the Group-2 Sandy Lane at Haydock. Now he switches to first-time blinkers. BETDAQ 5.5.

Blinkers are also applied by Charlie Fellowes on Vadream, beaten only three lengths in the British Champions Sprint in the autumn but probably Va-dreaming of rain; so, too, Prince Lancelot. They won’t get it.

At 6.0 on BETDAQ, Bouttemont (Christophe Soumillon) holds Fast Raaj, a Group-3 winner here, at the weights on Polytrack form.

⭕ 4.00 Deauville (6f Listed 3yo): Harry Three (Ryan Moore for Clive Cox at around even money) has been hit with a 16lb rise for winning two hot handicap sprints at Newmarket and York.

He deserves this crack at a Listed prize on level terms. Le Cadeau and Haziym, second and third on the soft at Chantilly, may be found out for pace in the ground conditions.

AFFOGATO SET FOR THE HAT-TRICK

⭕ 4.15 Fairyhouse (Brownstown Stakes, 7f Group 3 fillies and mares) Affogato goes for a hat-trick after scoring here under Colin Keane on her third run ever, seon for Ger Lyons.

Affogato, who has a Group-1 target later in the year, was waited with to that hairpin into the straight and showed a nice turn of foot.

The worry about Star Girls Aalmal, fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and in the Jersey Stakes, is that Henry de Bromhead is out of form (1-26) and hasn’t had a Flat winner from 12 runners in 31 days. She has only ever won on soft ground.

Emphatic Answer has also needed some cut in the ground. Her Curragh Group-2 second in May would be good enough if she’s on song but she’s definitely better there than anywhere else.
