DAQMAN’S THE BULL’S-EYE KID: Daqman made 70 points from two winners of big Saturday races at Newbury and named first and third in the Gold Cup.
20-point start at Newbury
WON 4-1 IMPOSE TOI
50-point Gold Cup bull’s-eye
WON 8-1 KANDOO KID (3rd 5-1 Victtorino same race)
TODAY Daqman ranks Belloccio and Illico De Cotte as top novices, chase and hurdle, at Fairyhouse and Carlisle.
KENNEDY CRASHES OUT AGAIN
⭕ 1.05 Fairyhouse (Porterstown Chase) Jack Kennedy’s career may be limited by a fall at Fairyhouse yesterday in which he sustained a broken leg. That’s SIX times and the long-term effects are being looked at by specialists in hospital.
His ride, Where It All Began, in the Porterstown, has been withdrawn. Kennedy also misses his pick, Romeo Coolio, in the Royal Bond, odds-on Firefox in the Drinmore, and Teahupoo in the Hattons Grace. Sam Ewing is set to deputise today.
My own pick in the Porterstown is 33-1 shot Peaches And Cream, fourth in the 2023 Edinburgh National and an unlucky faller at the final fence when poised to win the 2024 Ulster National in the Spring.
He returned to form the last day but was bumped on the run-in and knocked back from second to third at Kelso (3m 2f).
Gavin Cromwell could go back there with him for the Borders National but tries to lay the nine-year-old’s bad-luck hoodoo at Fairyhouse today; it all seems to have started there when he fell at the final fence as favourite while a novice.
Klarc Kent, second in the Ladies National at Fairyhouse then managed fourth in the Scottish National but, though eight now and trained by Willie Mullins, hasn’t won a race, hurdle or chase.
History Of Fashion suddenly turned up at 40-1 with ‘apparent improvement in form’ at Down Royal early this month.
Street Value chose today’s race to hit form out of the blue at 22-1 a year ago. Second that day? Why, none other than History Of Fashion. In seven out of 11 starts surrounding his sole success, he was pulled up!
Sphagnum and Outside The Door, first and third in the Cork Grand National a month ago, renew rivalry with Outside The Door better off at the weights and on the changed ground.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 9.4 Outside The Door, 34 Peaches And Cream
BELLOCCIO ROYAL BOND BEST
⭕ 1.35 Fairyhouse (Royal Bond Novice Hurdle) Romeo Coolio, sole starter for Gordon Elliott, ran away with his maiden, 18 lengths, at Down Royal last month.
But 6.4 offer Belloccio, a Royal Ascot winner on the Flat, was equally as exciting as a nine-lengths Punchestown maiden winner in the Spring and is chosen by Paul Townend from Willie Mullins five runners.
⭕ 2.05 Fairyhouse (Drinmore Novice Chase) This time Mullins doesn’t play and Elliott runs four aces; at least they were all winners the last day.
But I think his odds-on Firefox may set alight Heart Wood (Henry De Bromhead, BETDAQ 2.94), who has a lot more experience; in fact, Grade-3 winner and Grade-1 placed, never out of the frame in the last two years.
⭕ 2.40 Fairyhouse (Hattons Grace Hurdle) Stayers Hurdle winner, Teahupoo, goes for a hat-trick in this race, like Honeysuckle winning it first at the age of five.
But the five-year-old young pretender this time, the unbeaten mare Lossiemouth, gets a 7lb sex allowance.
ILLICO TOP NOVICE CHASER
⭕ 1.55 Carlisle Illico De Cotte for Dan Skelton, who landed a double at Newbury yesterday, stayed further than this on his chase debut at Carlisle in October.
What impressed me was his strength at the finish, with a good jump at the last. The only debutant that day, he beat a three-time chase winner. BETDAQ 4.6 taken.
⭕ 2.30 Carlisle Pembroke, a 9.4 offer this morning, could be another one for the Skeltons, dropping down in grade to better his Welsh Champion Hurdle sixth.
Jackpot d’Athou has been disappointing and is festooned with aids against his name: second wind op and cheekpieces.
More worrying is his having to give a stone to the favourite, To Chase A Dream, winner here first run back in the champion hands of Brian Hughes. Never out of the first two in the last 12 months.
