Like fathers like sons. Chaldean, son of 2010 Dewhurst winner Frankel, won yesterday’s 147-year-old Dewhurst renewal, trained by Andrew Balding, whose father, Ian, saddled Mill Reef to win the race in 1970 on the way to a famous Derby victory.
Yesterday’s race was without the 2,000 Guineas favourite, Sakheer, and the big son of Kingman, Sir Michael Stoute’s Nostrum, carrying the first colours of Chaldean’s owners, looked more like a colt for next year’s Derby, a one-paced third in the fast time.
Chaldean, on the other hand, moved to the front of the market when his imposing stature was seen in the paddock and to the front of the race fully six furlongs out under Frankie Dettori, enjoying his control of the Rowley mile track on a potential Guineas star of 2023.
It was another flying leap for Frankie and a leap up the ratings for Chaldean, whose time was good and who must now closely challenge Little Big Bear.
Silver Knott followed subsequent Guineas winner Coroebus in taking the Autumn Stakes, completing a quick double for Charlie Appleby after his Flying Honours strode away with the opening two-year-old Group-3, the Zetland. The colts’ ratings are potentially revised to:

Both Libertus and the Fahey runner, Phoenix Beach, were winners over the CD here at Southwell in August from vital low draws.
The differences between them today may be that James Fanshawe (Libertus) has been missing strike (0-11 including three favourites), while Fahey is on fire. And that Phoenix Beach has the one stall while Libertus is out in gate 10.
In fact, Macchiavello, fourth to Libertus in August, might turn him over today, better off at the weights and coming out of stall 2.

It was in this race a year ago that Spanish Star became a CD winner on the soft, and Tom Marquand is booked for a repeat bid today, which suggests he has been laid out for the race again.
