SATURDAY-KING DAQMAN STRIKES GOLD AT 20-1: ‘The boys are back in the big time’, wrote Daqman in his Friday column, and yesterday he put his money where his mouth is and backed the young ace claimer Oisin Murphy, who duly took the Ayr Gold Cup on Highland Colori (WON 20-1, win and place).

47 POINTS PROFIT FROM THREE WINNERS: The Saturday king also tipped Sharestan (WON 11-4) at Ayr and named Supplicant (WON 7-2) as Richard Fahey’s ‘new Garswood.’ Profit on the day: 47 points.

STILL CHAMPIONS TO BE MADE: The Flat season isn’t over yet! There’s the autumn double of Cambridgeshire and Cesarewitch, the big Arc meeting, and Champions Day at Ascot. Daqman whets your appetite for the hot heats in this big-race diary which nominates a potential star for each race.

ASCRIPTION (Cambridgeshire, Newmarket, September 28, or Challenge Cup, Ascot, October 5) Rapid improver for small Newmarket yard, 26lb higher since the last day of July, when he won at Goodwood after being gelded.

Good run at Haydock when the firm surface was against him but bounced back once the autumn ground conditions set in at the Doncaster St Leger meeting, hammering a useful field by five lengths.

FEEL LIKE DANCING (British Champions Long Distance Cup, Ascot, October 19) The Queens Vase runner-up has been given plenty of time after winning a Group-3 on the July Course. Bypassed the St Leger to wait for an autumn campaign.

LEADING LIGHT (Arc De Triomphe, Paris, October 6, or British Champions Long Distance Cup, Ascot, October 19) Unbeaten since his debut, and now 33lb higher than a year ago, I saw his name written already on next year’s Gold Cup.

Stepped up from a Group-3 double (beat Feel Like Dancing in the Queen’s Vase) to take the St Leger with his long, galloping stride. So lazy at home that Ballydoyle was deceived by him or he might have more than one Classic on his CV by now.

MOUNT ATHOS (Melbourne Cup, Flemington, November 5) Some observers reckon he’s ‘not been at the races’ since strolling the Group-3 Ormonde Stakes in May, finishing behind the leaders at Royal Ascot and Goodwood.

Reckoned one of the Melbourne Cup’s unluckiest losers – though there have been many in this tricky stamina test – when laying too far out of his ground and finishing late. Will the Aussie handicapper allow him a pound or two?

NOVELLIST (Arc De Triomphe, Longchamp, October 6) This column has a big price about Novellist (24.0 to win 40 points) for the Arc, despite his King George romp over five Group-1 winners left onlookers gasping.

His biggest threat for the Arc at the time, Flintshire, failed to spark on trials day at Longchamp but Treve and Orfevre emerged as powerful opponents in what has the makings of one of the great Arcs.

ROCKALONG (Cambridgeshire, Newmarket, September 28) I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this one’s ability. A big, bonny stable favourite, he’s half-brother to a Graded-class colt in America.

ROCK CHOIR (British Champions Fillies and Mares race, October 19) Highly regarded full sister to the massively-progressive Chorist, and simply a question of whether she’s yet ready for the big time. ‘She’ll be top class next year,’ says her trainer.

TAC DE BOISTRON (Cesarewitch, Newmarket, October 12) Back to Europe for a soft-ground season – didn’t start racing again until August – after disappointing on a sound surface in the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

Good first run for his new yard at Glorious Goodwood was capped by his Chester romp this month, slamming a Listed field eight lengths and 10 lengths.

TORONADO (Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes (British Champions Mile), October 19) The QE 11 looked like a cruise for Toronado on his Goodwood blitz of Dawn Approach in the Sussex Stakes but, as happened in the 2,000 Guineas, his form dipped in the York International.

This time the excuse was that he was coughing after the race but it may be significant that both Newmarket and York were run on firm ground. His two-year-old hat-trick was on good and the Sussex Stakes was on good to soft.

INTELLO (Arc, Longchamp, October 6, or Champion Stakes, Ascot, October 19) Moonlight Cloud’s turn of foot was too potent for Intello over a mile at Deauville, but the French Derby winner is still the one to beat at 1m 2f, and cleverly won the Prix Du Prince d’Orange (Group 3) at Longchamp yesterday, giving rise to speculation as to whether he might even go for the Arc. There are mixed messages from his breeding concerning his stamina but his relaxed style of racing gives him every chance, depending on his draw and the pace of the race.

VIZTORIA (Sun Chariot Stakes Newmarket, September 28, Prix De La Foret, Longchamp, October 6, British Champions Sprint, October 19) A new star, Viztoria, whizzed into contention at the Doncaster St Leger meeting, opening the door to any number of autumn prizes, when she took the Group-2 Park Stakes in scintillating style, stepping up on her Royal Ascot form now the easier ground is here.
