Look out Ireland! Paul Nicholls nominated big-race revenge at the Irish festivals for Bravemansgame after his compact and confident, foot-perfect round of jumping to win the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby yesterday.
With the told-you-so air of a trainer of experience who is happy to know his stuff, Nicholls ruled out the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, where the Irish power-pack the prizes, looking further forward instead to the likes of Punchestown.
But first, THE target for Braveman will be the King George V1 Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day: ‘He’s absolutely made for it.’
The man who has won the Charlie Hall with See More Business, Cyrname and Silviniaco Conti, declared: ‘Bravemangame’s as good as any of them!’
Into my Fortune Cookies list go Bravemansgame and Proschema after yesterday’s results, and I shall add L’Homme Presse following Venetia Williams’ return yesterday with a fine run from Frero Banbou.
Bravemansgame, L’Homme Presse and Proschema all won money for the Fortune Cookies last season and the full list for 2023 will appear after the Breeders Cup.
Trainer to follow in these early stages of the Jumps season is Sam Thomas, after Our Power defied his own predictions (‘will need the race’) to land the London Gold Cup at Ascot.
Sam is striking at 25% and every finisher in the last 10 days has been in the first four. Back them with Sam Twiston-Davies or Charlie Deutsch in the saddle. He has a runner every day but Friday this week.
The stable stepped into the limelight last year by winning both the Welsh Grand National Trial and the big one itself with a double by Iwilldoit at Chepstow in December.

HELD IN HIGH REGARDE
⭕ 12.50 Carlisle A very interesting novices’ hurdle which looks above average for the track.
It’s first day at school for most of these who bring promising point form to the table.
One of the more experienced in that sphere its Regarde for Jamie Snowdon who could saddle the stable cat at the moment and I’l take a close look. He’s 7 winners from his last 13 and does especially well with his runners at the Cumbrian track.
Regarde was an easy winner of his latest race and stable form is a massive factor over the two Betdaq Betting Exchange market leaders trained by Archie Watson (1 from 21) and Jonjo O’Neill (2 from 28).
WRENNING OUT OF OPTIONS
⭕ 1.43 Huntingdon There were two non runners on the Huntingdon card mid-morning and given that field sizes are now: 2,3,5,5,4,8 that could be two too many. Too much racing?
That’s the bad news – the good news is the racing there remains competitive despite the dearth of runners – even the opening match is hard to call – the class of Pentland Hills (unraced over jumps since the Champion Hurdle 2020) versus the solid recent form of Aucunrisque.
I’ll let you spin the coin on that one but I’ll take an interest in the second race where we are inundated with three runners! The most interesting is Sedge Wren who might just have a bit too much class for her two rivals.
She has run two creditable runs in bumpers – starting off here in February with a good third and then went to Cheltenham in April to finish in the same position behind the impressive winner Queens Gamble.
Her rivals recent form might be questionable. Martalindy won at 50/1 here last time out beating a 2/13 favourite in a four runner race and the value of that form might not be worth the paper it’s written on. Her trainer Philip Kirby is currently 0-19.
Maridadi was a bumper winner at Wetherby who ran well for her new trainer at Warwick on debut over hurdles when second to Notnowlinda. The winner and fourth haven’t exactly boosted the form since and I fancy Sedge Wren might just have the greater scope at this stage of their careers.
HOUSTON – NO PROBLEM
⭕ 3.40 Carlisle a wide open handicap chase which might be best trusted to Houston Texas to pick up on where he left off last season for Nicky Richards who has started the new campaign brightly (4 winners from last 12).
He’s bidding for a course hat-trick and again gets the softer ground he loves.
Whole stack of dangers headed by Seven No Trumps for the Skeltons who is tackling this longer trip for the first time.
