BOUDOT PROVES THE REAL McCOY
I prefer to be a loner. The crowd by definition cannot get rich; it’s only by opposing the crowd and their obvious opinions that you can win money.
But, as if his 196 winners didn’t speak for themselves this year, I was beginning to think that no one else among Press and critic appreciated jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot, the champion of France.
Then, before yesterday’s British Champions Mile, Tony McCoy, alias Sir Anthony McCoy, was asked by ITV Racing where he would place Boudot in the list of leading jockeys. His immediate one-word answer: top!
Boudot was able to answer for himself a few minutes later when he drove The Revenant home in the Mile, which was a race of champions (Crowley, Dettori, Moore, Murphy and Keane all followed him home).
McCoy even picked as an example of Boudot’s ability the same race – a losing one – that I had used to praise him in this column, his defeat in the Arc.
As Sir Anthony said, the entire Arc scenario that day revolved around Boudot slowing down the race and dictating from the front to try to get Persian King, a good-ground miler, to win over 1m 4f on heavy. He failed by only two lengths.
Tom Marquand’s double on Addeybb and Njord yesterday was artistry itself but, of the home riders, British Champions Day already belonged to Hollie Doyle. By 2 o’clock with only two races run, she had landed a 203-1 double.
Trueshan in the Long Distance Cup was a case of ‘not too far’, but trainer Alan King will hardly bemoan the loss of his handicap mark. This horse roared into Group class.
But it was Hollie’s ride in the Sprint that had the crowd at home on the edge of their sofas. Headed and got back up again in screaming style.
It was a race of a dozen headlines with Boudot flat out on the fabulous mare, One Master, Art Power back to his old rhythm, and a sensational return to form by 80-1 outsider Brando, denied only by a game winner, Glen Shiel, and a game rider, Hollie Doyle. By a nose.
ROYAL IS BACK AS HURDLES KING
⭕ 3.10 Ffos Las (Welsh Champion Hurdle) The front of the market provides the winner of this, usually aged five or six (5-7). Yet horses aged seven, eight and nine lead the betting this morning.

Despite his age, Sceau Royal stands out, particularly after Alan King’s Champions’ Long Distance Cup win yesterday with Trueshan.
Following 11 consecutive Graded chases, in which he’s been placed three times behind Altior, this is Sceau Royal’s first handicap.
Sceau Royal won first run back for three years running in the autumn of 2016, 17 and 18, his preference being 2m on good ground, which he is expected to get today.
As a hurdler, he won the Elite at Wincanton and the Triumph Hurdle trial at Cheltenham. I took BETDAQ 8.3.
The strength of his position here is suggested by the recent form of his close rival in the market, Thenbannerkingrebel. Beaten favourite twice in three flops out of four starts, his sole success a novices’ Listed at Haydock
Paul Nicholls’ Ecco ran in the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival but has twice failed to emerge from novice-hurdle level.
Milkwood cruised home over CD here at Ffos Las the last day and the handicapper says he’s improved a stone for his last two hurdles.
Ballyandy won the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock in January and was close up turning in for the real thing in March but has always needed soft ground.
Lightly Squeeze ran away with a race at Plumpton at the start of the year and, though he shot up 17lb, was winning a Grade 3 at Newbury a month later when he fell at the last. BETDAQ 11.5 is ‘wrong.’
Trainer Harry Fry is currently top of the Racing Post list for getting the most out of his current runners, and he is 100% in this kind of race at Ffos Las.
Nicky Henderson is not yet in his usual form and Buzz was a drifter this morning. Despite his hat-trick, Marine One was also easy to back in this company.
Millers Bank could be best of the novices, with winners emerging from his back-to-back wins, but they were 297 days and more back last winter and he may need the run.
ALWAYS ROOM TO PLAY ON BETDAQ
⭕ 2.57 Kempton Darling Maltaix will be hot favourite here but has beaten very little and faces another front-runner, Locker Room Talk, and I was struck by the difference in the BETDAQ offers: 2.9 the favourite to 6.4 for Locker Room Talk. That 107% market gives you Room to play!
⭕ 3.32 Kempton (Winter Hurdle) Of all Nicky Henderson’s runners, Verdana Blue, placed in the Ascot Stakes and the Ebor this summer, should be bang on the money today.
Verdana Blue won this Listed race in 2018 and went on to beat Buveur d’Air in the Christmas Hurdle, then last year took the Scottish Champion Hurdle.
It’s always a worry when tricky Nicky has two runners in the same race but the conditions of this Listed are such that, though rated 10lb inferior to Verdana Blue, American Grand National winner Brain Power has to give the mare 15lb.
Silver Streak won this last year and was runner-up to Champion Hurdle star Epatante in the Christmas Hurdle but concedes Verdana Blue 11lb.
