RETURN OF ‘KING’ GOLIATH
⭕ 1.33 Longchamp (Prix du Conseil de Paris) The return to form of Anmaat, 40-1 at Ascot yesterday, snatched the £737k Champion Stakes prize from Calandagan.
The 6-4 favourite had been slowly away and short of room when Stephane Pasquier squeezed through in the final furlong only for Jim Crowley to find space of his own and record the fastest 200 metres of the race in sustaining his run.
For those who have followed Sir Michael Stoute into his autumn of retirement, this victory for trainer Owen Burrows, who was 12 years Sir Michael’s assistant, kept the memories alive ahead of Stoute’s final runners next weekend.
Meanwhile, today at Longchamp, Calandagan’s trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard preps his giant Goliath for his autumn campaign.
Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, who won Ascot’s handicap finale at 14-1 yesterday, King George star Goliath is penalised to give 4lb all round on ground heavier than he would like.
Zarakem won the the Harcourt on heavy ground here in the Spring, and was not disgraced – just outclassed – when sixth in the Arc.
Marquisat has more consistent form, second twice and third in the lower-level Group races heavy ground, at one stage finishing ahead of Goliath.
Goliath, not seen for 85 days, is officially rated a couple of pound down on Marquisat (115-112), with Zarakem well ahead of both on 120.
ROCK’S GROUND AND RATING
⭕ 2.50 Longchamp This Listed fillies and mares looks between Tareefa for William Haggas, Al Anoud for Ralph Beckett and Rose Prick for Ed Walker, with six of the eight runners over from England.
Tareefa has won on Haydock soft and the ground should not be a problem to the Kingman filly Al Anoud, though this is her first try in the mud.
Ratings include 100 Miss Cantik for Amy Murphy, 95 Zarabanda (Christophe Soumillon for David O’Meara), 94 Rose Prick and Tareefa, the 3yo off 89.
But a second 3yo, Karl Burke’s Molten Rock, rates 101 plus the age allowance after a Group-3 second at Dusseldorf. The ground is her big advantage.
SOUND CHANCE FOR YEAH MAN
⭕ 3.25 Longchamp A Listed for 3yo fillies, with Fair Point (104 Ralph Beckett), never out of a place and well clear in the ratings of those with exposed form, among them 92 Kindest Nation (Hugo Palmer), 91 Run Away (Andrew Balding) and 82 Melon Twist (Karl Burke).
But the home team have the ‘dark’ filly in Abstract. A Wootton Bassett, trained by Francis Graffard, she beat subsequent dual winner, Moonfire, at Lyon.
FAIR POINT ABSTRACT THREAT
