DAQMAN FOUR COURSE SUNDAY SPECIAL: DAQMAN goes cross-country and cross-county in search of winners on Sunday with a bet at Hamilton, Plumpton, Uttoxeter and Gowran Park.

PUNTER FRUSTRATION: Spilled over at Worcester on Friday when Tony McCoy was involved in a row with a racegoer. DAQMAN questions whether punters views should be better represented in more orthodox ways.

MIRROR IMAGE: The Daily Mirror made a serious error of judgement on Saturday by publishing the distressing image of Wigmore Hall.

MIRROR IMAGE

Many would argue it’s the sole purpose of a tabloid newspaper to sensationalise but when they go a step too far then public revulsion can count against them.

The reaction about the Daily Mirror’s front page photograph yesterday, showing a stricken Wigmore Hall about to be put down at Doncaster, was shocking – even for many seasoned racing professionals. However, the general reaction seemed more of anger directed at the Daily Mirror itself for publishing the image rather than the picture itself.

And the people who were upset most about the image being published? Undoubtedly, those who cared for and loved the horse the most.

PUNTER RIGHTS AND WRONGS

Tempers ran high at Worcester on Friday when champion jockey Tony McCoy was abused by a racegoer for failing to win the final race on Saint Helena who was sent off the 7/4 favourite. The racegoer had to be led away by security for hurling abuse at McCoy who told the Racing Post that he had a beer can thrown at him. McCoy had earlier ridden a four-timer on the card.

Clearly such behaviour can never be tolerated, encouraged or condoned but what avenues are open to punters who feel hard done by and wish to raise concerns in more dignified ways?

Precisely none. The historical argument being that it’s gambling and the punter takes the risk.

But there are no reasons why this can’t change. In what other business does the ultimate consumer have so little say or rights ?

SUNDAY

HAMILTON: It’s the weekend after the weekend before for Kevin Ryan who sent out The Grey Gatsby to beat Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes. Little fish taste sweet too and Dominic Cork could be the answer to the opener here. The front running grey ran well at Redcar last time when runner-up to Mr Shekells in a seven furlong nursery and could be suited by this stiff six furlong trip. I think he’ll go close, but if he gets pegged back an insurance place bet at evens (for three places) makes sense on BETDAQ.

PLUMPTON: The flash flooding in the south seems to have avoided Plumpton and racing will go ahead on fast ground. Springinherstep was a desperately unlucky loser at Market Rasen coming to grief at the second last when five lengths up. The handicapper may have taken a sympathetic view as she would have gone up by more than 2lb if she’d stayed on to win by five lengths. This is competitive but she looks progressive.

UTTOXETER: By accident my nap ties in with the story above. Tony McCoy riding a horse called Skint, you couldn’t make it up. However, the Ali Stronge trained runner does look to have an outstanding chance. McCoy has only ridden Skint once before (and won a chase on it). Aidan Coleman was onboard last time and the partnership stayed on strongly to win at Worcester. The switch back to the smaller obstacles look wise as he is much better handicapped.

GOWRAN PARK: Eight fillies go to post in the Group 2 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes at 3.55. Brooch looked hugely impressive on debut at Galway and stepped up in class to win well at Killarney last time. However, her price looks too short and I prefer the resurgent Alive Alive Oh in the place market.
