DAQMAN THE NATIONAL HERO: Daqman is a dab hand at Grand Nationals. He won another one yesterday, a war of attrition in the mud for the West Wales National, with Emperor’s Choice (WON 9-2) coming out on top. That’s our man’s third National this year already (see Daqman Library):

WON 14-1 Somerset National
WON 9-2 West Wales National
WON 4-1 North Yorkshire National

8-2 LEAD OVER PRICEWISE: Otherwise, it was so near yet so far yesterday, with his nap, Whisper (2nd 6-4, beaten a head), and his outsider, Moonday Sun (2nd 8-1 from 11.2 on BETDAQ). The place on Moonday Sun added to his tally over Pricewise. He’s 8-2 up this year.

1.00 Musselburgh Venetia Williams’ Monetary Fund, twice a winner here, is well handicapped now with Arctic Court and Capellanus – and, therefore, Any Given Moment – while Mister Dillon is back to form and Pay The King has that ‘could be anything’ look at the foot of the handicap after only four starts.

Crowning Jewel, who drops down from Graded level, is 13321 after a break but has yet to prove himself at 3m. I’ll stick with the super-in-form Venetia at 5.1 on BETDAQ this morning.

1.30 Musselburgh Racing Pulse is odds on this morning but these are unexposed novices and the race-sponsor’s Medieval Chapel (7.4 on BETDAQ as I write) will have been specially prepared for the race. This is his Albert Bartlett!

2.00 Musselburgh (Scottish Champion Chase) Claragh Native is back to his right trip and ground, as when beating Quito De Tresor at the November meeting here, and Stormin Exit was back to form on the last day.

But, on this ground, over 2m, we must surely expect a youngster to outspeed those three. Upepito is all the rage, with a recent first run in England as a primer for this, and it could well be another for Venetia, though, at the offers, course-specialist Kie looks tasty (5.7 on BETDAQ).

2.30 Musselburgh More unexposed novices in an interesting race. Clarcam (9.0 on BETDAQ) was too big this morning for a trainer who has won this before with his only runner in the race, seeking better ground for this Graded-placed winner on a sound surface in Ireland.

3.00 Musselburgh (Scottish Future Champions Chase) Funny Star has already beaten Ericht at Doncaster giving more weight than today, so why should he be a bigger price?

3.30 Musselburgh (Scottish County Hurdle) You need youth on your side. None of the last seven winners was more than six years old.

Last year Brick Red carried top weight to victory and Sametegal, who heads the handicap today, is 11 from 11 in the first three, and a CD winner at Musselburgh to boot. But what is lurking in the 26lb range below him?

Franciscan beat Clever Cookie over CD in November, ran a good third in a Listed at Haydock but went backwards at Doncaster last time.

Yorkist, who has landed a hat-trick under a boy rider, has a change of jockey – a certain A P McCoy – but also very different going after his heavy-ground romps and he’s shot up the handicap.

Strongpoint does well on a sound surface but so, too, does dual Listed winner Local Hero, whom he beat on the soft at Musselburgh a month back.

Lyvius is high in the handicap after two decent runs but with form not a patch on Sametegal’s two Graded places.
