DOUBLE GIVES DAQMAN 997 HITS OVER PRICEWISE: Daqman enters eight days of Classic races – two Guineas in France today, two more in Ireland at the weekend – on the brink of a 1,000 winning bets tipped against Pricewise of the Racing Post. Daqman’s tally of 976 from 2013 to the end of the Jumps in March is now 997, with their score on the Flat 21-13 after his run of eight winners in a week. Yesterday in the challenge:

6-1 FORTUNE COOKIE FOR FRENCH 1,000 GUINEAS: Daqman has had one runner, one winner, in his Fortune Cookies horses to follow, Desert Crown (won 7-2), in Thursday’s Dante Stakes at York for 35 points profit. Now here’s the second runner of the season in the French 1,000 Guineas at around 6-1 to take the profit to close on 100 points.
MOORE CAN TOY WITH THE FRENCH
🇫🇷 2.15 Longchamp, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas): Toy was my original choice for the Newmarket 1,000 but the ground was firm and Aidan O’Brien instead ran Tuesday to finish third to George Boughey’s Cachet.
Now Cachet (James Doyle) defends against Toy (Ryan Moore) on very different ground: I say ‘very different’; it’s always softish in France (they water) but it should be only good to soft at worst under the drying Paris sun.
In fact, Olivier Peslier was telling reporters yesterday that ‘the ground is going to be quick, because it’s warm and dry in France,’ but good to soft is ‘quick’ in French racing! We’ll see.
If you think Toy is inexperienced; yes, she has won only her maiden, but she’s run three big-field races and beaten 53 others, including colts.
The filly she toyed with by five lengths on soft at Cork, Esculenta, had run Tuesday to a little over two lengths at Naas, and Tuesday was only two behind Cachet at Newmarket; collaterally, it works out that Cachet is 9lb in front of Jumbly.
Toy, well drawn today in 5 as opposed to Cachet’s 10 stall, is sister to Guineas winners Gleneagles and Marvellous and to Oaks winner, Joan of Arc, while the dam is sister to Giants Causeway.
This is Ballydoyle royalty, and she is the young princess, quite clearly from her breeding having the maximum potential to take this Guineas and then the French Oaks, Prix Diane.
The Prix de la Grotte is often a good French trial but it always leaves you guessing which way the form will turn around. At least it was good to soft when Rosacea beat Daisy Maisy in April.
Daisy was caught napping by a late run from the rear by Rosacea and didn’t have time to respond. Mangoustine was third; Acer Alley fourth; last year’s Marcel Boussac second, Times Square, only seventh. Toy was around 6-1 this morning; Daisy around 16.

APPLEBY’S MODERN 2,000 TREBLE
🇫🇷 2.55 Longchamp, Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas): A strong team of raiders from England and Ireland but all bar one parked out in high stalls.
Leopardstown 2,000 trial runner-up, The Acropolis for Aidan O’Brien (who has won this five times), is in 12, Bayside Boy (Roger Varian) in 14 and the Craven Stakes runner-up to Native Trail, Claymore (Jane Chapple-Hyam), is in 16.
But Charlie Appleby gets lucky. Modern Games, who won the Breeders Cup juvenile at Del Mar last autumn, is in 4.
Coroebus and Native Trail did the business for Appleby with winner and third in the English 2,000 at Newmarket, and are among the stable contingent for the Irish version at The Curragh next weekend, so he’s still in with a big shout for a 2,000 Guineas hat-trick.
Appleby, who has withdrawn only Modern Games from his team for the Curragh to do duty here under William Buick, will note that Andre Fabre has both his colts drawn in the low numbers, Tribalist (the choice of Mickael Barzalona but held on form by Lassaut) and Ancient Rome.

IS IT A BRILLIANT FOUR-TIMER?
⭕ 3.40 Ripon Course-specialist Benadalid, last year’s winner of this off 4lb higher, was primed for a repeat with a good run at Doncaster late last month under today’s rider, Jason Hart, but he’s seven years old now.
Fishable is equally at home at Ripon but there is a question-mark over the firm ground, and I shall take a chance on Brilliant Light.
Trainer Saeed Bin Surror (30% strike rate at Ripon) landed a hat-trick yesterday plus a bold second to Baaeed with Real World.
Very lightly raced, as are most in the yard, Brilliant Light looked the winner here at Ripon (1m 4f) at this 10-furlong point in his last run in England before wintering in Dubai.
