IT WAS WELL DONE, DAQMAN! David’s Well (WON 6-4) followed Fortune De Mer (WON 16-5) for Daqman over the weekend at Cheltenham but Realta Liath (3rd 10-1) and Vincenzo (2nd 7-2) followed L’Homme Presse (2nd 5-1) and For Gina (2nd 7-2). So near and yet so far.
GOLD WINNER HAD THEM COLD
⭕ CHELTENHAM: He was once a Willie Mullins winner (that’s not unusual). Sent out of Sir Tony McCoy’s private yard at Lambourn (say that again!). Officially trained by Faye Bramley (who?). Form figures in the last year: 0U00PP034 (ouch!)
Glengouly, who had won just the one chase in 2022, lined up for the prestigious December Gold Cup at Cheltenham yesterday. And made all the running.
That he won at 33-1 is also a shock. With his record, he should have been 330! says Daqman.
‘I’m gobsmacked,’ said Bramley, in her first season with a licence, after looking after the McCoy family ponies for eight years.
Glengouly had been 80-1 twice and 100-1 three times in his previous 11 starts, no nearer than 28 lengths off the winner.
Who rode him to slam a top turn-out for one of the last big races of the year? Well, that was no surprise.
The nine-year-old was winner number 155 of the season for Sean Bowen, and puts him only 25 behind his championship total of 2024-25.
HEARD ABOUT THAT FORM?
SEAN BOWEN: The champion has five rides at Southwell this afternoon, and he won’t need smoke and mirrors to add to his fabulous 25% strike rate this season.
But on an easy turning track like Southwell, he could easily put the other jockeys to sleep again. In fact the Nottingham venue is in his top five for winners this season (69 at 22%).
⭕ 1.00 Southwell Bowen has won three times on Heard That for Olly Murphy in the last year but pulled up on him at Bangor on his return last month.
However, Heard That pulled up starting out at a similar time last year and won next time under Bowen at Warwick in a race similar in class and trip to today’s.
The difference is he’ll have to show improvement of 15lb, though most of that has already happened piecemeal in two more strikes from five starts.
One of his rivals today is brother James Bowen on Tedwin Hills, though that one failed to land the hat-trick, 7lb higher after an autumn double when well backed.
⭕ 1.30 Southwell Bowen is on Seasmoke (12.30) and Queenofthejukebox (2.00), and also rides Zamek (1.30) and Tramuntana (3.10) for Murphy.
Best of these could be the grey Zamek, who ran green on debut at Lingfield and had to be coaxed into a high-speed challenge to the all-the-way winner from two out. Will know more about this time.
LETOS IS ONE FOR THE IRISH
⭕ 1.40 Carlisle Letos, who has already won a Listed handicap, steps up in trip for trainer Anthony Mullins, who makes his first crossing from Kilkenny to Carlisle.
Olly Murphy has booked Gavin Sheehan for Roaring Conquest, his sole raider on the Cumbrian track, up a grade after winning at Windsor recently.
Hay Meadow has been hiked 10lb for winning at Hexham in a race ripped apart by a front-runner.
